             There has been dramatic growth in the development and application of Bayesian inference in
               statistics. Berger (2000) documents the increase in Bayesian activity by the number of published
             research articles, the number of books,and the extensive number of applications of Bayesian
             articles inapplied disciplines such as science and engineering. One reason for the dramatic growth
             in Bayesian modeling is the availab- ity of computational algorithms to compute the range of
             integrals that are necessary in a Bayesian posterior analysis. Due to the speed of modern c- puters,
             it is now possible to use the Bayesian paradigm to ?t very complex models that cannot be ?t by
             alternative frequentist methods. To ?t Bayesian models, one needs a statistical computing
             environment. This environment should be such that one can: write short scripts to de?ne a Bayesian
             model use or write functions to summarize a posterior distribution use functions to simulate from the
             posterior distribution construct graphs to illustrate the posterior inference An environment that
             meets these requirements is the R system. R provides a wide range of functions for data
             manipulation, calculation, and graphical d- plays.
             Moreover, it includes a well-developed, simple programming language that users can extend by
             adding new functions. Many such extensions of the language in the form of packages are easily
             downloadable from the Comp- hensive R Archive Network (CRAN).

El diseño tiene un valor cultural indudable así como un prestigio social reconocido. La acción de
diseñar es propia de muchas actividades, entre las que se incluye evidentemente la ingeniería. El
diseño constituye la punta de lanza de una tecnología humanizada que busca, no solamente crear
productos que sean útiles a la sociedad, sino que además tengan un valor formal que haga más
agradable su uso. Ese valor añadido, que podemos ver en algunos puentes, y que va más allá de lo
técnico, de lo económico y hasta del propio valor de uso, permite que estas obras pasen a formar
parte de un patrimonio que la sociedad aprecia y tiene interés en conservar. El ciclo de sesiones
dedicadas al “Diseño en Puentes”, que se resume en este libro, pretende difundir el pensamiento y

El acero estructural y el hormigón coexisten frecuentemente hoy en día en proyectos de
estructuras. Diferentes requisitos como la optimización del material o los tiempos de ejecución
hacen de las estructuras mixtas una respuesta globalmente efectiva, al combinar las ventajas del
acero y del hormigón. Los sistemas de construcción mixta se encuentran bien documentados y
acompañados de un amplio abanico de soluciones constructivas factibles, tanto por las normativas
vigentes, como por casas comerciales especializadas. Contrariamente, las uniones entre estos dos
sistemas se encuentran raramente documentadas y sin respaldo normativo. Este manual pretende
delimitar los campos de aplicación idóneos así como pasar revista al punto crítico de conexión de lo
que en buena medida son dos modos diferentes de diseñar y construir, estructura metálica (en este
caso, los soportes) y de hormigón (aquí, en losas o forjados y vigas).

Ocean wave energy conversion
