The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

the last beach cleanup at the “Escondida
area.” This effort allowed for the re-
opening of the entire east tract of the
refuge. For the first time since the 2017
hurricanes, the public areas that were
opened for public use are once again

Culebra NWR Biologist!
Ricardo Colón-Merced began volunteering
with the Service in 2006. In 2012, he became
the wildlife biologist at the Culebra National
Wildlife Refuge. During his time as a wildlife
biologist in Culebra, he established various
projects. Some of these projects include
monitoring sea birds, sea turtles, bats,
amphibians and reptiles, and the control of
invasive species. He worked in collaboration
with other partners to establish five new
populations of Culebra’s endemic cactus
Leptocereus grantianus and two populations
of Black Cobana (Stahlia monosperma). He
was also in charge of the Youth Conservation
Corps program during the summer. After
six years of service, it is time to say “hasta
luego.” We wish you great success in your new
position as a biologist for the Natural Resource
Conservation Service in Puerto Rico.
