3. DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ASIGNATURA
Historia de la Arquitectura II es una asignatura que se enmarca dentro de un proyecto global del
cual forman parte el resto de asignaturas de Historia de la Arquitectura: I, III y IV. Está orientada
a abordar el estudio de las obras más representativas que corresponde al periodo abarcado, no
solamente bajo un prisma cronológico, sino también en cuanto a la relación entre las diferentes
civilizaciones y la pervivencia de algunas soluciones a lo largo de la historia. Iniciándose con el
estudio de la Arquitectura Islámica (mezquitas, arte hispano-musulmán), budismo y cultura Zen,
la asignatura se desarrolla abarcando diferentes movimientos artístico-arquitectónicos: arte
prerrománico y románico (Camino de Santiago, monasterios y arquitecturas asistenciales);
Gótico (estructuras catedralicias y hospitales); Arquitecturas precolombinas, Renacimiento
(Quattrocento y Cinquecento, Roma de los Papas y tipologías hospitalarias); y Barroco (periodos,
influencia de la Contrarreforma, Arquitectura religiosa, urbanismo). A lo largo de la asignatura se
estudiarán las obras más relevantes del escenario temporal abarcado, procurando el análisis de
las mismas desde una perspectiva arquitectónica, de modo que se puedan vincular con algunos
edificios posteriores cuyos esquemas compositivos enraízan con ellas. Como estrategia para
reforzar tal objetivo, se diseña un tema preliminar que sintetizará el hecho urbanístico-
arquitectónico en el escenario sociocultural, geográfico y artístico de los cuatro hemisferios, y sus
sinergias, cuyos contenidos irán reapareciendo paulatinamente a lo largo del temario. Con todo
ello, el alumno de esta asignatura se proveerá de un importante archivo de referencias históricas
imprescindible para poder desarrollar la profesión de manera adecuada. Para cursar
adecuadamente esta asignatura, es deseable haber cursado y superado “Introducción a la
arquitectura” e “Historia de la Arquitectura I”.

2.- RESULTADOS DE APRENDIZAJE:
Resultados de Aprendizaje
Expresar con textos y gráficos los conceptos, formas y vocabulario específicos de la
Historia de la Arquitectura del periodo que va desde el inicio del Islam hasta el Barroco.
Elaborar análisis teóricos y gráficos de las obras más significativas de los estilos
arquitectónicos cubiertos por la asignatura
Saber extraer conclusiones del análisis y expresarlas de manera sintética.
Desarrollar trabajos de carácter crítico sobre determinadas obras arquitectónicas,
estableciendo lecturas transversales con otras construcciones significativas,
correspondientes a otros periodos históricos, especialmente contemporáneos.
Elaborar un discurso fundamentado sobre la aplicación a obras concretas del periodo
histórico estudiado en la asignatura “Teoría de la Arquitectura y el proyecto”

3.- DESCRIPCIÓN SISTEMAS DE EVALUACIÓN:

Exámenes CONVOCATORIA ORDINARIA
parciales Exámenes escritos con aproximadamente un 60% de preguntas objetivas de
conocimiento teórico, y un 40% de razonamiento sobre conocimiento
aplicado al análisis de obras y ejemplos, incluyendo la elaboración de
gráficos. Cada examen constará de dos partes. En la primera se presentarán
imágenes correspondientes a los temas estudiados en el curso que deberán
ser reconocidas, datadas y comentadas de manera analítico- sintética. En la
segunda parte se desarrollarán una o dos preguntas gráfico-teóricas sobre
alguna de las partes del temario correspondiente.
CONVOCATORIA EXTRAORDINARIA
El alumno que no supere la asignatura en la convocatoria ordinaria tendrá la
opción de presentarse a la convocatoria extraordinaria. Esta convocatoria
constará de una prueba presencial única que determinará la calificación final
de la asignatura, sin tener en cuenta su rendimiento académico en la
convocatoria ordinaria. Este examen escrito contendrá aproximadamente un
60% de preguntas objetivas de conocimiento teórico, y un 40% de
razonamiento sobre conocimiento aplicado al análisis de obras y ejemplos,
incluyendo la elaboración de gráficos. El examen constará de dos partes. En
la primera se presentarán imágenes correspondientes a los temas estudiados
en el curso que deberán ser reconocidas, datadas y comentadas de manera
analítico- sintética. En la segunda parte se desarrollarán una o dos preguntas
gráfico-teóricas sobre alguna de las partes del temario correspondiente. Es
imprescindible obtener un 5 sobre 10 en este examen para poder aprobar la
asignatura.
Seminarios Ejercicios breves en los que se propondrá la resolución gráfica de algunos
prácticos aspectos teóricos explicados en el curso, el comentario crítico de imágenes
relacionadas con el periodo abarcado por la asignatura, o ejercicios similares.
El análisis se efectuará mediante textos y esquemas gráficos. La
documentación necesaria para el desarrollo de estos ejercicios será́
suministrada por el profesor al comienzo de la clase y los resultados serán
recogidos al final de la misma.
Trabajo de Cada alumno realizará un trabajo gráfico teórico de investigación sobre un

Zen y Sintoísta en Japón. El desarrollo de la cultura hebrea. Las culturas Precolombinas:
arquitecturas azteca e Inca. Asentamientos indígenas en Norteamérica. El Neopaladianismo en
Norteamérica. La influencia española en la arquitectura y el urbanismo Iberoamericano.
TEMA 1. ARTE ISLÁMICO
Introducción histórica y geográfica. Mahoma. Conceptos esenciales del arte islámico. La
mezquita y sus tipos fundamentales. EL arte hispanomusulmán: omeyas, taifas, almohades y
nazaríes. Otras religiones orientales: Arquitectura Hinduista y Budista: su desarrollo en el

9. NORMAS DE COMPORTAMIENTO
1.- NORMAS:
Las faltas en la Integridad Académica (ausencia de citación de fuentes, plagios de trabajos o
uso indebido/prohibido de información durante los exámenes), así como firmar en la hoja de
asistencia por un compañero que no está en clase, implicarán la pérdida de la evaluación
continua, sin perjuicio de las acciones sancionadoras que estén establecidas.

3. COURSE DESCRIPTION
History of Architecture II is a subject framed in the global project that the rest of subjects of
History Share: History of Architecture I, III, IV. It is focused on the study of the most
representative works of the period to which the course refers, not only under a chronological
order, but also in relation to the different civilization and the continuance of some solutions
throughout history. Starting with the study of Islamic Architecture (mosques, Spanish-Muslim Art),
Buddhism and Zen culture, the course develops spanning different artistic and architectural
movements: Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art (Camino de Santiago, monasteries and
assistance architecture; Gothic (Cathedrals and hospitals); pre-Columbian architecture,
Renaissance (Quattrocento and Cinquecento, Rome of the Popes and hospital typologies); and
Baroque (periods, Counter-Reformation influence, religious architecture, urbanism). Throughout
the Course the most relevant works of the temporal frame will be studied, analyzing them through
an architectural perspective, in a way that can be compared to some later buildings which
compositional schemes. As a strategy to reinforce that goal, a preliminary subject that synthesize
the urban-architectural fact in a sociocultural, geographic, artistic context within the four
hemispheres and their synergies, whose contents will reappear progressively throughout the
course. The student will have, after taking the course, an important archive of historical
references, indispensable to act properly as an architect. For being able to course the subject, it
is desirable to have taken the “Introduction to Architecture” and the “History of Architecture”
courses.

3.- DESCRIPTION OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

S03 Written exam with general questions, essays
ORDINARY EXAM
Written exam with approximately 40% of objective questions of theoretical
content, and 60% of reasoning about applied knowledge to the analysis of
works and examples, including the elaboration of graphics.
EXTRAORDINARY EXAM
The student that does not pass the subject in the ordinary call will have the
opportunity to develop the extraordinary call. It will consist in a on-site
unique exam which will determine the final grade of the subject, without
taking in account the student academic level during the ordinary call. This
written exam with approximately 60% of objective questions of theoretical
content, and 40% of reasoning about applied knowledge to the analysis of
Works and examples, including the elaboration of graphics. The exam will
have two parts. The first one with pictures related to the topics studied in
the course that should be recognized, named, dated and discussed in an
analytic and synthetic way. The second part will be one or two long
questions, both graphic and theoretical, about parts of the subject. It is
mandatory to achieve a grade of 5 over 10 in this exam to pass the subject
S09 Between 2-3 sessions will be addressed to develop critical practical analysis
in class, to study and debate the project strategies of some specific works
belonging to the period of History covered by the subject. The analysis will be
done through texts and graphic schemes. These seminars could be
completed with short exercises of debate about other cultural and artistic
manifestations: music, painting, sculpture, photography, cinema, etc.,
proposed by the professor. The needed documentation will be provided by
the professor at the beginning of the session, and the outcomes will be
delivered at the end of it. Students will follow these Practical Seminars
developing the competencies acquired
S06 Each student will develop a Research Work about a theme proposed by the
professor. The outcomes will be presented in class during its development, and
delivered in the indicated dates.
Students will have to carry out a bibliographic research activity, which can be
complemented with the visit and direct experience of some architectural works,
about texts and projects that will be proposed by the professor at the beginning
of the course, corresponding to the period of History covered by the subject.
This will be useful as a base for the development of the Research Work in its
written and graphic dimensions. With all the material generated by each student
along the research process, a final document will be performed.

0.- The urban and architectonical fact in a sociocultural, geographical and artistic context of the
four hemispheres and its synergies. The development of the Hindu and Buddhist architecture in
the Asian south-east. The case of the Zen and Shinto culture in Japan. The development of the
Hebrew culture. Pre-Columbian cultures: Inca and Aztec architecture. Native settlements in
North America. Neo-Palladian architecture in North America. The influence of Spanish
architecture in the Ibero-American architecture and urbanism.
1. ISLAMIC ART
Historical and Geographical introduction. Mahoma. Basic concepts of Islamic art. The mosque
and its principal types. The Hispanic-Muslim art: Umayyads, Taifas, Almohad and Nasrid. Other
oriental religions: Hindu and Buddhist architecture: development on the Asian south-east. The
case of the Zen and Shinto culture in Japan.
2. PRE-ROMANESQUE AND ROMANESQUE ART
European context after the Roman Empire Fall. The Pre-Romanesque: Carolingian, Visigoth,
Asturian and Mozarabic. Main artistic characteristics. Europe in the year one thousand. The cult
to relics. Basic concepts of the Romanesque art. The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela:
urbanism, churches along the Way and assistance architecture. The monastery: Cluniacens,
and Cistercians. The Hebrew culture.
3. GOTHIC ART
Historical and Geographical introduction. Native settlements in North America. The Europe of
the Cathedrals and their artistic revolution. Main characteristics. The French model. Spanish
Gothic: Primitive, Plenary, Levantine and Flamboyant. Introduction to the hospital architecture.
Pre-Columbian cultures: Inca and Aztec architecture.
4. RENAISSANCE
Historical and Geographical introduction: the role of Italy. Ancient times. Humanism and Neo-
Platonism. Basic concepts in the Renaissance art. Florence in the Quattrocento: main figures.
Cinquecento: Rome of the Popes. Neo-Palladian architecture in North America. The
Renaissance in Spain. Hospital architectures in Spain and Europe.
5.- BAROQUE
Historical and Geographical introduction. The Baroque Concept. Periods: Formation (1580-
1630): the Counter-Reformation power as a military force and its repercussion in the Baroque
religious architecture: the introduction of new forms. Full Baroque (1630-1680): Francesco
Borromini (1599-1667) and Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Baroque urbanism. Exportation
(end of the Seventeenth century and beginning of the Eighteenth century). The influence of
Spanish architecture in the Iberic-American architecture and urbanism. Caravaggio and
Velázquez.

9. ATTITUDE IN THE CLASSROOM

inappropriate use of prohibited information during examinations) or signing the attendance
