Rincón del Curador Curator’s Corner El último mes, las noticias del mundo estuvieron dominadas por la cobertura al incendio que destruyó la Catedral de Notre-Dame en París. La destrucción de este punto importante de referencia y símbolo icónico de fé es trágico en sí mismo. Pero en cuanto vi las noticias, no pude dejar de comparar nuestra respuesta colectiva como humanos a estas noticias, con el reciente sufrimiento de otra “Dame”, incluso más importante, la Madre Tierra. El año pasado, sólo en California, cerca de 2 millones de acres de bosques fueron destruidos por el fuego, rompiendo el doloroso récord de más incendios del año anterior. Aquí en nuestro Estado de Jalisco, la ciudad de Guadalajara estuvo ahogada durante semanas por el humo de incendios forestales en el Bosque La Primavera que habían destruido ya más de 2,000 hectáreas. Junto con los daños del gran incendio de 2012, cerca de un sexto del bosque ha sido dañado y está empezando el lento camino de la “recuperación”, un proceso que toma cerca de 30 años hasta que hay una moderada maduración, suficiente para proveer de manera normal los servicios ecosistémicos. No sólo es el fuego a tasas sin precedentes lo que afecta nuestros bosques, están siendo permanentemente alterados por cultivos, pastoreo y “desarrollo” a una velocidad sorprendentemente rápida y de una manera furiosa. Pero, para aquellos que puedan sentirse impotentes de hacer algo real y significante que sea parte de la solución, anímese—el Jardín Botánico de Vallarta está lanzando su más ambiciosa campaña económica para lograr cuadruplicar la superficie de bosque protegido para inicios del año 2020. En un nuevo acuerdo firmado para la tierra, tenemos la oportunidad de comprar 88 hectáreas de bosque por aproximadamente $70,000 MXN por hectárea. En sólo unos pocos días después del incendio de Notre-Dame, más de un billón de dólares fueron aportados para su restauración. Last month’s world news was dominated by coverage of the fire that destroyed much of Paris’ Notre
Dame Cathedral. The destruction of this famous historic landmark and iconic symbol of faith is
indeed tragic. As I watched the news, I could not help but compare our collective human reaction
to this news with the recent suffering of another even more important “Dame,” Mother Earth.
Last year in California alone, nearly 2 million acres of forests were destroyed by fire, topping the
record that was just only previously set the year before. In California, “worst ever” is becoming
the new norm. Here, in our state of Jalisco, the City of Guadalajara has been choked in smoke
for weeks from fires in the Primavera Forest that have already destroyed over 2,000 hectares.
Together with the burns of the last major fire there in 2012, about 1/6 of that forest has been
destroyed. It is beginning the slow road to “recovery,” a process that takes about 30 years until
it is moderately mature enough to provide normal ecosystem services. Not only are our forests
burning at unprecedented rates, but they are also permanently altered for cultivation, grazing, and
“development” in a shockingly fast and furious manner.
For any who may feel helpless to do something real and significant as part of the solution, take
heart—the Vallarta Botanical Garden is launching its most ambitious capital campaign ever to
more than quadruple its forest preserve by early 2020. In a freshly-signed land deal, we have
an opportunity to purchase 88 hectares (nearly 220 acres) of a nearby forest at the cost of about
70,000 MXN per hectare (about 1,500 USD per acre).
A few days after the Notre-Dame fire, over a billion dollars was pledged for its restoration: Your
planet is on a pathway to catastrophe now. How much will you pledge to conserve a piece of it
