Dear Parents and Students,

The Verona Area School District is committed to providing opportunities for a summer experience that is filled with
academic exploration, enrichment experiences and curricular reinforcement for all students. The courses listed
within have been proposed and designed to be as enriching as they are engaging.

As you read through the Summer 2015 brochure with your child, you will find a listing and course description of

courses for grades Pre-K to 12 . When registering your student, please make sure that you are selecting courses
based upon your child’s CURRENT grade for the 2014-15 academic year. Please note that these courses are in
addition to many of the same opportunities offered in years past, which will also continue this summer. Help fill
your child’s summer with learning, discovery, and fun. Consider taking advantage of these summer opportunities
for students in the Verona Area School District.

Registration Information

Online registration will open on Wednesday, April 1 at 5:00 pm and will end Friday, April 17 at 11:00 pm. If you

do not have access to a computer or would like some help with registration on April 1 , we will have computer labs
open at Savanna Oaks Middle School for parents to access from 4:45 - 8:00 pm. A paper copy of the Summer
School Registration Form is also available at all school offices for those without computer access. Class requests
submitted by paper registration will be added by VASD staff during the first day of registration. The district will
strive to provide registration access to all families for summer school classes.

Payment Information
Summer School 2015 course fees are collected on the first day of class. All fees will be waived for students
receiving free/reduced lunches during the year. If paying by check, please make the check payable to the Verona
Area School District.

Payment in this manner is ONLY for summer school classes. Complete the separate registration and payment for
any camps and Nat activities that may also be listed within this summer programming guide.

Online registration is the preferred and quickest way to register for summer school. The summer school link is
located on the district website. Simply click on the link titled, “Summer School 2015” to register. Since some of
our families do not have access to register online, a paper copy registration is available. Please use your child’s
current 2014-15 grade level when deciding on a class.

Use the same form to register more than one child per family. A confirmation letter will be sent after the

K-8 Summer School 2015

Savanna Oaks Middle School will be the location for Elementary and Middle Summer School programming, with
possible over-flow at Stoner Prairie Elementary School. Classes will range in size from 18 to 36 students, depending
upon the number of instructors for each course.

Interested teachers have proposed courses that incorporate literacy, math, problem solving and technology
experiences in their proposed offerings. These summer opportunities may also include time for drama, arts,
hands-on investigations and experiential learning. All courses will be offered by certified teachers at no cost to
students, with the exception of a small materials fee for certain classes using significant materials. All fees will be
waived for students receiving free/reduced lunches during the year.

         Sessions/Times
         The 2015 Elementary/Middle Summer School session will run for 4 days/week for up to 4 weeks, from July
         6th – July 30th, 2015.

         During this 4-week session, available learning experiences will be offered in 3 time sequences:

         Student Drop-off/Pick-up
         All Elem/Middle school students are to be dropped-off at the front entrance of Savanna Oaks Middle
         School (address below). Classes begin at 8:30 am; please do not drop your child off prior to 8:20 am.
         Classes end at 11:00 am, please pick your child-up in the front of Savanna Oaks Middle School.

High School Summer School

The Verona Area High School will be offering a small number of summer school electives, each worth a
.5 credit towards graduation. Space within these classes is limited.

       Sessions/Times
       There is only one session for VAHS courses, which runs from July 6th to July 30th. Students meet
       Monday through Friday from 8am to 12pm. (Week four ends on Thursday, July 30th). Please
       contact course instructors for further information.

       Bus Transportation

The Five R’s (Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic, aRt and Recess)

Description: Students will spend a portion of each morning reading "good fit" books, writing
stories, solving math problems, creating simple art projects, and enjoying a little recess time.
While not intended to be a remedial class, it will keep children actively engaged in learning
experiences. Identical classes will be offered during both two-week sessions.

Kid Scientist Extraordinaire

Description: Students will be able to use first-hand experiences to gain scientific knowledge,
conduct scientific experiments using the scientific method, make predictions and draw
conclusions and explain the experiment results both verbally and in writing.

Coding with Kodable

Description: Coding with Kodable is an introductory course in programming. Kodable
introduces basic coding concepts and logic used in every programming language such as
sequences, functions, loops, conditions, and debugging. Additionally, Kodable makes
programming fun for kids by transforming coding into a puzzle game, complete with furry
characters called fuzzes, and an engaging storyline revolving around their adventures on a
foreign planet.

Maker Madness

Description: If you enjoy making and doing, this class is for you! During this summer school
experience students will explore Minecraft, make circuits and program rolling robots and print
in 3D all while letting their imagination run wild. In true Makerspace fashion, students will get
down to the nitty gritty of how and why things work to be able to use the process for their own
creation. Also, students will work with various forms of technology to document their creative
process and tell stories relating to their creations.

World Explorers

Description: In this 4-week course, students will learn about various countries around the
world; from the artwork, food and music to the history, geography and culture. We will study
two different countries/cultures every week. The countries of study (from five of the seven
continents) include: South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Ireland, China, India, Spain, and Germany
(please note: country selection subject to change). Students will gain a broader understanding
of the many diverse cultures in our world and will better understand their fellow classmates,
teachers and even people they will meet and interact with in their day-to-day lives. This cross-
curricular course focuses on art, history, reading, writing, language and music. Students will
participate in a wide range of activities, including (but not limited to): watching and responding
to SmartBoard videos, assisting with food preparation and tasting, creating individual and group
cultural art projects, learning new languages, listening, creating and dancing to music and
reading/presenting about the various countries of study.

Science is Everywhere

Sports Spectacular

Description: This course is perfect for the sports enthusiast or the kid who is looking for
something new to play out at recess. We will focus on sportsmanship, basic skill development,
rules of the game, and just plain having fun! We will include many variations of commonly
played sports and also teach new and exciting games and activities. These may include and are
not limited to: basketball, soccer, football, kickball, volleyball, relay races, obstacle courses, and
more! A special water day is planned for the end of the class! Be sure to wear sports
appropriate clothing, wear athletic shoes and bring a water bottle. We will use the gym in
inclement weather.

Yoga and Mindfulness

Description: I am excited to take your child on a fun summer school journey! We will spend two
weeks learning yoga poses and practicing mindfulness activities through arts and crafts and
storytelling. Yoga and mindfulness go hand-in hand. Yoga is an ancient practice, which helps to
improve flexibility, strength and balance as well as increasing the ability to concentrate,
improve body-awareness and self-image and reduces stress. Mindfulness is learning how to tap
into the now and appreciate all things happening in the present moment. It also helps to reduce
stress and become happier, kinder and more compassionate individuals. I look forward to
providing your child with the tools they will use to achieve this!

Reading, Writing, and Math with Technology and Nature

Description: Students will have many fun opportunities to review reading, writing and math

and math activities.

Description: Take a fun-filled course this summer in the art room! Students will create art using
a variety of media and topics as inspiration. Free choice time will also be offered focusing on
reading for fun and games to practice with numbers, telling time and counting money.

Around the World in 8 Days - Trip 1 and Trip 2

Description: Around the World in 8 Days – Trip 1 (Session A) All aboard! Take an exciting
journey with us as we take a spin around the world. Together we will explore the following
places: Kenya in Africa, the Arctic Polar Region, China in Asia, the Outback in Australia (with an
Aboriginal focus), France in Europe, Mexico in North America, and Brazil in South America.
Culture and language will be celebrated with literacy and the arts. The world is calling you!
Fee: $5.00 for each class or $10.00 for both
Description: Around the World in 8 Days - Trip 2 (Session B) Pack your bags and bring your
“passport” as we travel the world. We will make stops on all seven continents: Egypt in Africa,
Antarctica, Japan in Asia, Australia, Germany in Europe, Canada in North America, and Peru in
South America. We will learn about unique customs through reading, math, art, music, and
games. Your adventure awaits!

Learn to Type

Description: Students will be introduced to keyboarding and touch typing. Students will learn
that they don't have to look at the keys to type and, through continued practice, will ultimately
become faster at typing. We'll play fun typing games and create some projects using their new
skills.

African Drum and Dance

Description: Students in the African Drum and Dance class will learn the basics of West African
drum and dance as well as cultural and historical aspects of this tradition. They will learn how to
play the hand drum called a djembe and the dunduns, which are played with sticks. They will
learn some basic African Dance moves and practice with music. They will also engage in
activities and discussions where they reflect on the role of culture and identity in the world.
Students should be willing to participate in all activities listed, including drumming, dancing,
and some more reflective and academic activities.

Drama Club

Description: In Drama Club students will be working together to put on a live theater
performance. All students will have an important role in the show, either as an actor, set
designer, costume designer, sound designer, or stage grip. Most students will perform multiple
roles. Students will learn speaking and listening skills, work on reading with fluency and
expression, and gain confidence in speaking in front of an audience. Students will be able to use
their creativity in creating sets and costumes for the final performance. This is a course
designed for any child interested in theater (on stage or behind the scenes) and for all ability
levels!

Multicultural Art Experience

Description: This course will give 3-5th grade students the opportunity explore art themes and
methods from non-western cultures. The skills that they will gain will include, but are not
limited to identifying and creating styles of art from cultures other than their own, being able to
communicate about art in an anthropological point-of-view, and understand how their own art
influences society and culture.

Folk Tales Around the World

Description: Students will explore folktales from around the world. Throughout the course
choose a folktale to present in the form of a brief reader's theater play. Students will also
research the history of the folk tales and the country from which it came to share with their
peers as part of the final class presentation. Students will work on their reading fluency and
comprehension, researching and writing skills, and speaking and presentational skills.

Crazy Cubing Class

Description: In this class you will learn how to solve a 2x2, 3x3, and pyraminx Rubik’s cubes!
The $20 course fee will include one of each of these high-quality cubes to begin your cube
collection. In our two weeks together we will discuss how to effectively solve three cubes using
strategies, notations, and algorithms. These fun techniques will help you solve all other cubes.
You will continue to get faster as you practice to become a speedcuber! You will even create
your own cube out of LEGOS. Let the cubing begin!

This course will introduce students to woodworking machines, processes, and materials used in
the woodworking industry. Students will construct a small woodworking project in this two
week course. Examples of projects may include, bird houses, gumball machines, or small
shelves.

Math Lab Mania!

Description: Math Lab Mania! Did you think science was the only class you should be doing labs
in? Well, you are wrong. If you want to complete hands-on labs that require you to stretch your
brain and think mathematically, this is the section for you. Math labs will include: catapults,
bouncy balls, cars, kites, towers, dice, games, a summer Olympics and much, much more. Come
to have fun and learn some unique mathematical concepts all at the same time.

Bling! Bling! Money is my thing!

Description: Bling! Bling! Money is my thing! Like money? Want to make the most out of your
allowance and birthday checks? Come to class to learn how to budget to have the things you
want. Complete a checkbook challenge, invest in a mock stock market, learn how to save
money for college or your next cool cell phone, learn how credit cards work, and much, much
more. If you’re curious about money and want to learn more, I’ll see you soon.

Description: Do you like to cook? Do you like to create things? Kids Be Fit is a class that
combines nutrition and cooking with a focus on local, seasonal foods. Each participant will
learn how to cook healthy meals and snacks as well as understand what foods have a positive
and negative effect on the body

Gardening & Growing 101

Students will help build and maintain the new Badger Ridge Community Garden and Edible
Forest. Students will learn about growing produce from seeds and will learn how to use the
food they grow. Getting dirty and physical work such as weeding and planting seeds will happen
daily. Much of each day will be spent outside. Students are responsible for their own sun
protection.

Understanding Social Issues through Media Literacy

to boost your success in high school by improving the skills needed to do just that!
Read to succeed: learn, practice, and apply the reading skills and strategies needed to succeed
in your classes next year. Boost grades: complete reading and work on assignments now for
your courses in the fall.
Freshman~ you will start the year knowing more than 7 high school teachers, know your way
around the school, work in all the labs, and know how to use key technology, apps, and tools at
the high school.
All students will increase their grades and achievement in less time with proven systems to
organize, track, plan, and complete your high school and life workload.

students can check out summer reading materials.

Do you feel you could have stronger study skills to succeed in your high school classes? AP Boot
Camp might be just what you need. This is a team taught class with Ms. Bailey and Ms. Domres.
We will work on study habits, reading & writing strategies, group work skills, note-taking,
memory strategies and more! Plus, it's summer so we will be sure to have some fun. If you are
taking AP Psychology or AP Lang, this class is strongly recommended. It is only for two weeks
and lasts for the first two hours of the day. Following boot camp, those enrolled in AP Psych or
AP Lang should sign up for those summer school classes for the following two hours.

them, and much more. This class is especially encouraged if this is the first AP class you've
taken. You will be introduced to the high expectations of the AP program and how to navigate

given .5 credits required for graduation. This must be a four-week course Mon. through Friday
for 4 weeks (except the last week, which ends on Thursday). If a student misses more than
three classes they will not pass the class.

Información sobre las Inscripciones
La inscripción a través del internet (en línea) comenzará el miércoles 1 de abril a partir de las 5:00 de la tarde hasta el viernes 17

dichos Formularios de Inscripción, en donde indicarán su selección de cursos de verano, se ingresará por el personal de VASD el

Escuela de Verano 2015: Kindergarten a 8º grado (Escuela Primaria y Secundaria)
La Escuela Secundaria Savanna Oaks será donde se llevará a cabo el programa de verano para los estudiantes de la escuela
primaria y la escuela secundaria. Si se requiere de más espacio, el programa utilizará la Escuela Primaria Stoner Prairie. El
tamaño de las clases será de entre 18-36 estudiantes, dependiendo del número de maestros disponibles para cada curso.

Los maestros interesados han propuesto cursos para la escuela de verano que incorporan la lectoescritura, las
matemáticas, resolución de problemas y la tecnología. Estas oportunidades de verano, también, pueden incluir tiempo
para el drama, el arte, practicar la realización de investigaciones y el aprendizaje experimental. Todos los cursos se
impartirán por maestros certificados sin ningún costo para los alumnos, con excepción de una pequeña cuota para los
materiales en aquellas clases que usan una cantidad significativa de material. Se exonerarán todas las cuotas a los
estudiantes que reciben almuerzo gratis o a precio reducido durante el transcurso del ciclo escolar.

Sesiones/Horarios
La sesión de 2015 para las clases de verano para las escuelas primarias y secundarias consistirá en 4 días a la semana

La Dejada y Recogida de los Estudiantes

favor no deje a su hijo(a) en la escuela antes de las 8:20 de la mañana. Las clases terminan a las 11:00 de la mañana. Por

Transporte Escolar
Los autobuses escolares, cuyo servicio está a cargo de la compañía de autobuses First Student, estarán disponibles para
los alumnos que necesiten transporte a la escuela. Las familias deben informarle al distrito si necesitan este servicio
cuando hagan la inscripción. La compañía de autobuses, First Student, preparará las rutas más efectivas y designará las
paradas para recoger y dejar a los estudiantes que necesiten este transporte.

Asistencia Escolar
Los estudiantes que participan en la escuela de verano al nivel de la escuela primaria y escuela secundaria deben estar

Escuela de Verano 2015: 9º a 12º grados (Escuela Preparatoria)
La Escuela Preparatoria del Área de Verona ofrecerá una pequeña cantidad de cursos electivos. Cada uno de
ellos contará por 0.5 (medio) crédito hacia los créditos necesarios para graduarse. El cupo en estos cursos es
limitado.

           Sesión/Horario
           Solamente hay una sesión para los cursos de la Escuela Preparatoria del Área de Verona (VAHS), la
           cual se llevará a cabo desde el 6 de julio hasta el 30 de julio. Los estudiantes se reunirán de lunes a
           viernes de 8:00 de la mañana hasta las 12:00 de la tarde. Por favor comuníquese con los maestros
           para más información.

           Transporte Escolar
           Los autobuses escolares, cuyo servicio está a cargo de la compañía de autobuses First Student,
           estarán disponibles para los alumnos que necesiten transporte a la escuela. Las familias deben

Descripción: Codificar con el programa nombrado Kodable es un curso introductorio que introduce el tema de
codificación. Kodable presenta los conceptos de codificación y la lógica que se utiliza en cualquier lenguaje de

Kodable crea una programación divertida para los niños al transformar la codificación a juegos de

Descripción: ¡Si disfrutas de hacer creación y realizar/desempeñar cosas, este curso es para ti! Durante esta
experiencia de escuela de verano, los estudiantes explorarán el juego de Minecraft, crearán circuitos,
programarán un robot que rueda e imprimirán en 3-dimensiones, todo mientras permiten a sus imaginaciones
correr sin límites. Igual como un miembro verdadero del programa nombrado Makerspace, los estudiantes
aprenderán hasta lo más fondo de cómo y por qué funcionan las cosas a través de estos procesos, con el fin de
duplicar este proceso para hacer sus propias creaciones. Además, los estudiantes trabajarán con una variedad
de formas de tecnología para documentar su proceso creativo y contar cuentos relacionados a sus creaciones.

los siete continentes) incluye: Sur África, Australia, México, Irlanda, China, India, España y Alemania (por favor

enseñaremos juegos y actividades nuevas y emocionantes. Entre ellos, podremos incluir pero no limitarnos al:
