Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Introduction to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)
Introduction to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) A Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, expected to launch in 2021, will provide a framework for corporates and financial institutions to assess, manage and report on their dependencies and impacts on nature, aiding in the appraisal of nature-related risk and the redirection of global financial flows away from nature-negative activities and towards nature- positive outcomes. 11
Introduction to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) The challenge Nature sits at the heart of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies for both governments and the private sector. The global ecosystem is rapidly approaching a planetary tipping point – the first of its kind caused by humans. The total global biodiversity funding gap is estimated to be US$722-967 billion per year by 2030. The finance sector is not only contributing significantly to this through its lending and investment practices, but is also impacted because of the increased risk nature loss represents to lending and investment activities. The TNFD aims to develop transparent and practical recommendations for nature-related risks and impacts reporting that can promote more informed investment, credit and insurance underwriting decisions. 12
Introduction to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) How it will work An Informal Working Group (IWG) of 74 member organisations from across the finance and corporate sectors, governments and regulators, and consortia, supported by a Technical Expert Group, is currently planning a two-year programme of work for the Taskforce, to resolve the reporting, metrics and data needs of financial institutions that will enable them to better understand their risks, dependencies and impacts on nature. In collaboration with the corporate sector, the reporting frameworks will be developed in 2021, and tested in early 2022 before being made available worldwide in 2023. The Taskforce itself is planned to launch in the second half of 2021. 13
Introduction to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Endorsements “The new Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures will help financial institutions to shift finance from destructive activities and toward nature-based solutions.” United Nations Secretary- General, António Guterres “With the Task Force on Climate-related Disclosures, TCFD, we managed to shift private finance and we need to do the same with TNFD.” President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron “I have great hopes that the TNFD will ensure the risks of misusing nature will be properly identified, and so avoided.” His Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince of Wales 14
Introduction to the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) TNFD and TCFD The TNFD is collaborating with and building on the lessons learned by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). TNFD will establish a framework that embraces the broader complexity of natural capital and biodiversity to help catalyse a nature positive economy. There are key synergies in the delivery of both initiatives: Disclosures of nature risks will sit alongside disclosures of climate risks to give investors, lenders and insurers a complete picture of their environmental risks. Both are needed because the way we measure climate risk and nature risk are different. 15
