The state is again administering the 5Essntial Survey to students, staff, and parents. This
information is used to gather feedback to report out on each school’s state report card. Staff took
the survey this week and students will take it next week. We are asking parents to please look at
the attached letter and take the survey as well. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. The parent
survey window closes on March 11th. Thank you for taking the time to let us know how we are
doing.

ISA –State Science Assessment Dear Parents and Guardians, Students in grades 5 and 8 will begin taking the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) March 7. The ISA aligns with our new Illinois Learning Standards in science. This assessment helps families understand how well students are performing academically and see whether they are on track to succeed in college. The ISA represents Illinois’ commitment to preparing all students for college and careers, including in the high- demand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The assessment also satisfies federal accountability requirements. The ISA is designed to reflect classroom experiences. Many students who took the assessment last year said the ISA seemed more like instruction than a test. Students do not simply select an answer and fill in the bubble of a multiple-choice test. Rather, the ISA pushes students to apply their knowledge when they give answers, thus better preparing them for higher education and a career. All students deserve the opportunity to demonstrate what they know; they get to see how knowledge is applied to real-life situations. The ISA has three sections and is untimed. The average student time-on-task is estimated at 120 minutes. The results provide administrators with important data to help them make broad curriculum decisions at the school and district levels. But classroom educators will not use the results to make teaching adjustments year-to-year for individual students. We encourage you to talk with your children about the importance of doing their best on the ISA, while communicating that the assessment yields only one piece of information about them and their school’s progress. Students’ attendance, classroom work, homework, projects, performance on local tests, participation in sports and extracurricular activities, and contributions to the school’s climate and culture all help them grow and learn. Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we prepare for our Trimester 2 report cards, we wanted to share some details with you.
*The Winter NWEA MAP (Northwest Evaluation Association - Measure of Academic Progress) results are
going home on March 11, 2022. Please be on the lookout for these results. For our Kindergarten
parents/guardians, we are also including a brochure to help you better understand these results. You can access
a sample report to help you understand this information here.
*The 2021-22 Trimester 2 Report Cards will be delivered digitally through Infinite Campus. They will be
released on March 11, 2022. You will access them through the account you already use for registration
purposes. You will need your Infinite Campus login information to access the report card. If you need help in
accessing your Infinite Campus account, please use the links on the site to reset your username or password if
needed. Specific directions can be found here. Translated report cards and the required updates for students
receiving EL or Special Education services will be also sent home digitally if possible or they will be sent
through the mail.
*Our teachers have been working very hard to gather data about our students’ progress based on the scope and
sequence documents.
*As a reminder, some of our learning targets repeat throughout the year, while others may not repeat but
continue to build student skills over the year. Students will be provided additional instruction as the rigor or
expectations of the targets change over the year. For our students in Grades K-4, a grade of ‘D’ for
Developing should not be considered an unsatisfactory grade. Teachers will continue to monitor and help
students continue to grow.
*Don’t forget that Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, March 23 and Thursday, March
24. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you have not scheduled your time yet.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Parents, teachers and students in Grades 4-8 in Community Consolidated School District 46 will have an opportunity to
participate in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey, available in English or Spanish, is designed to
generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your
thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school. On behalf of the Illinois State
Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of
Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved
attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
● Effective Leaders
● Collaborative Teachers
● Involved Families
● Supportive Environments
● Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators
were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more
Essentials.
If at least 20 percent of parents complete this survey for a school, a parent supplement will be generated. The parent data will be
used by the district as a measure of continuous improvement. Teachers across the district and students in grades 4-8 will be
responding to this survey. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your
child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be
connected to you or your child. For parents, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be available through March 11, 2022. To take
the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.
For students in Grades 4-8, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered during school. This survey should take
approximately 25 minutes to complete. Please see the additional information regarding the Student Survey for more details.

Book Fair Time!
Book Fairs are an opportunity for our students to build their
home libraries while benefiting the school. New this year
we will have a physical book fair and a virtual book fair.
The physical fair will be located in the library and
will be open March 22nd to March 24th.
Students will have multiple opportunities to visit
the book fair during the school day.
Families will be able to shop during conferences.
The virtual book fair will be open from March 21st to
April 3. All orders will ship direct to you.

lunes 14 de marzoA LONG WALK TO WATER
How far are you willing to walk for clean water?
For many in South Sudan, villagers have to walk over 3.5 miles to get
water. Often, this water is contaminated and easily spreads disease
throughout a village. There has also been increased rebel activity in the area
making this a dangerous walk.
The 5th graders at Frederick School have been learning about refugees
which includes reading the novel, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.
The story, based on true events, follows the Lost Boys as they flee their home
in search of refuge. The novel also deals with the global crisis surrounding the
availability of clean water for all. The fifth grade students and staff would like
to create awareness for this cause. We will be raising money to support
Water for South Sudan, an organization that was founded by Salva Dut, one
of the Lost Boys, that builds water wells in Sudan. Our goal is $1,000 by April
1st.
To honor their journey, the 5th graders will be walking
3.5 miles as part of the fundraising effort on April 21st and

100 FLIGHTS!
On April 13, 2021 Honor Flight
Chicago will be flying our 100th flight!
To help us celebrate we are challenging
every homeroom to write 100 Letters to
Veterans by April 13th. These can be Mail
Call Letters or Letters to individual
veterans. Attached you will find directions
for both.
Families are invited to participate as well.
Our building goal is 2,200 letters but if we
exceed that, even better. This is a great
opportunity to learn about history and
discuss events from 1st person
perspectives.
Finished letters (in unsealed envelopes)
can be brought to Ms. Payleitner to be
delivered to Honor Flight HQ.

Call is one of the most memorable
parts of their day.

How you can help:
We need generic thank you cards and letters to our nearly 1,000
veterans we fly every year.
Guidelines:
● No last names for students
● They can include school name and address and teacher or
teacher email if vets want to reply
● No dates or mention of Veterans Day since we don’t know when
we will use them
● No sealed envelopes

Even after their flight, veterans enjoy receiving mail and hearing from
students.
We have over 100 videos, written interviews, and podcasts available on
the Honor Flight Chicago website https://www.honorflightchicago.org/.
For themed interviews with links to dig deeper you can look at

Watch one of the videos, read a written interview, or listen to a podcast
and then write to the veteran to let them know their story is still out
there and you are enjoying it. Teachers: Please prescreen videos as
some can be graphic and discuss life after the war and PTSD.
Sometimes, the veteran may have passed on but their family still enjoys
receiving mail about the impact their veteran continues to have.

¿Qué es el "Mail Call"?
Cada veterano que vuela en el Vuelo
de Honor recibe un sobre lleno de
cartas de sus familiares y amigos, de
la comunidad y de los estudiantes.
La visita al correo es una de las
partes más memorables de su día.

Cómo puedes ayudar:
Necesitamos tarjetas y cartas de agradecimiento genéricas para
nuestros casi 1,000 veteranos que vuelan cada año.
Instrucciones:
● No deben incluir el apellido de los estudiantes
● Pueden incluir el nombre y la dirección de la escuela y el correo
electrónico del maestro si los veteranos quieren responder
● No incluir fechas ni mención del Día de los Veteranos ya que no
sabemos cuándo utilizaremos las cartas
● No deben sellar los sobres.

la vida después de la guerra y del PTSD.
A veces, el veterano puede haber fallecido, pero su familia sigue
disfrutando de recibir correo sobre el impacto que sigue teniendo su
veterano de guerra.
