April Is National Child Abuse Prevention Month National Child Abuse Prevention Month recognizes the importance of families and communities working together to strengthen families to prevent child abuse and neglect. Through this collaboration, prevention services and supports help protect children and produce thriving families. If You See Something, Say Something! April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. At HNM we have displayed pinwheels on our property as a whimsical reminder about the joyful nature of child- hood. While we could not display pinwheels last year due to COVID disruptions, I found a message on the spines of the pinwheels for 2 years ago and this year to help our reflection on the best treatment of chil- dren. In 2019: No excuse for child abuse; this year: every child matters. While we have all been affected by the pandemic and its restrictions on our lives, the effects of remaining at home far longer than during normal times has various effects. I have heard of families who have chosen to simplify their lives coming and closer together to strengthen family bonds. A negative effect is that family dynamic problems surrounding alcoholism or child abuse in other families have had the fodder of isolation to flourish. With fewer people observing our children in school, after-school activities, etc., it has been far more difficult to make sure our children are as safe as they can be. When someone comes to our campus, one of the things that is readily noticeable is the number of people wearing the blue and white HNM name badges. These are wonderful signs of our parish’s abundant hospital- ity, but they go far deeper than that. Our Lectors, Hospitality Ministers, Check-In people, etc. – all are called to be the eyes and ears of the parish to make sure all is working well in our parish. If anyone’s gut tells them that something is just not quite right – for example with the safety of one of our children – each is called to say something to help keep each child safe from harm. The US Department of Health and Human Services has published a Prevention Resource Guide to support families to be the strongest they can be. The 2021/2022 Prevention Resource Guide recognizes that there are actions we can take as a society and within communities, organizations, and families to address the root causes of child abuse and neglect. The child abuse prevention guide seeks to highlight the innovative ways that communities around the country are doing purposeful prevention work to help children and families thrive. The protective factors have always been central to the Resource Guide. A protective factors approach focuses on positive ways to engage families by emphasizing their strengths, in addition to identifying areas where they have room to grow with support. Focusing on protective factors helps children, youth, and fami- lies build resilience and contributes to positive outcomes. It may be found at https://www.childwelfare.gov/ pubPDFs/guide_2021.pdf These guidelines toward growing healthier families seem to me to coincide well with our Catholic life to have our families (the domestic Church) display the Spirit of God through each member. Infantil reconoce la importancia de que las

Abril es el Mes Nacional de Prevención del Abuso Infantil. En HNM hemos exhibido molinetes en nuestra
propiedad como un recordatorio caprichoso sobre la naturaleza alegre de la niñez. Si bien no pudimos ex-
hibir molinetes el año pasado debido a las interrupciones de COVID, encontré un mensaje en el lomo de los
molinetes hace 2 años y este año para ayudarnos a reflexionar sobre el mejor trato a los niños. En 2019: No
hay excusa para el abuso infantil; este año: todos los niños importan.
Todos hemos sido afectados por la pandemia y sus restricciones en nuestras vidas, los efectos de perman-
ecer en casa mucho más tiempo que en tiempos normales tienen varios efectos. He oído hablar de familias
que han optado por simplificar sus vidas al acercarse y fortaleciendo los lazos familiares. Un efecto negativo
es que los problemas dinámicos familiares que rodean el alcoholismo o el abuso infantil en otras familias
han tenido el forraje del aislamiento para florecer. Con menos personas observando a nuestros niños en la
escuela, actividades después de la escuela, etc., ha sido mucho más difícil asegurarnos de que nuestros ni-
ños estén lo más seguros posible.
Cuando alguien viene a nuestro campus, una de las cosas que se nota fácilmente es la cantidad de per-
sonas que llevan las gafetes de identificación azul y blancos de HNM. Estos son signos maravillosos de la
abundante hospitalidad de nuestra parroquia, pero van mucho más allá de eso. Nuestros lectores, ministros
de hospitalidad, gente de registro, etc. - todos están llamados a ser los ojos y oídos de la parroquia para
asegurarse de que todo esté funcionando bien en nuestra parroquia. Si el instinto de alguien les dice que
algo no está del todo bien, por ejemplo, con la seguridad de uno de nuestros hijos, cada uno está llamado a
decir algo para ayudar a mantener a cada niño a salvo de cualquier daño.
El Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de EE. UU. Ha publicado una Guía de recursos para la pre-
vención para ayudar a las familias a ser lo más fuertes que puedan. La Guía de recursos para la prevención
2021/2022 reconoce que hay acciones que podemos tomar como sociedad y dentro de las comunidades,
organizaciones y familias para abordar las causas fundamentales del abuso y la negligencia infantil. La guía
de prevención del abuso infantil busca resaltar las formas innovadoras en que las comunidades de todo el
país están haciendo un trabajo de prevención con propósito para ayudar a los niños y las familias a pros-
perar. Los factores de protección siempre han sido fundamentales para la Guía de recursos. Un enfoque de
factores de protección se enfoca en formas positivas de involucrar a las familias al enfatizar sus fortalezas,
además de identificar áreas donde tienen espacio para crecer con apoyo. Centrarse en los factores de pro-
tección ayuda a los niños, los jóvenes y las familias a desarrollar resiliencia y contribuye a obtener resulta-

Estas pautas para el crecimiento de familias más saludables me parecen coincidir bien con nuestra vida
católica para que nuestras familias (la Iglesia doméstica) muestren el Espíritu de Dios a través de cada
miembro. Oramos para que nuestras familias y cada miembro de la familia sepan que son amados y están
