The Albuquerque Housing Authority will accept pre-applications for Section 8 Housing
Choice Voucher Lottery from May 1, 2020 through May 31, 2019.

Pre-Applications for Public Housing Remain Restricted
NEW: Pre-applications will be taken online only at www.abqha.org starting
May 1, 2020. Pre-Applications will no longer be taken in paper format. Written
paper pre-applications will not be accepted. All applicants must apply through
www.abqha.org. AHA has two free computers available to complete your pre-
application. These terminals are available by appointment only. Please call 505-
764-3953 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins will not be accepted.
IMPORTANT: You are no longer required to visit the Albuquerque Housing
Authority Office at 1840 University Blvd SE to apply for housing nor is supporting
documentation required for your pre-application. Your pre-application may be completed
anytime for free from May 1, 2020 through May 31, 2020 through an internet connected
computer or suitable smartphone at www.abqha.org. A list of free and publicly accessible
computers is available at the Albuquerque Housing Authority Office at 1840 University
Blvd SE or www.abqha.org. AHA is committed to assisting persons with disabilities. If you
require reasonable accommodation or other special assistance, please call 505-764-3904 or

1) QUESTION: What is the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Lottery?

ANSWER: The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Lottery is a new system for administering the
Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. Households that wish to apply for a Section
8 Housing Choice Voucher will no longer apply to a waiting list but will apply to a
Lottery. The Lottery process will randomly select pre-applicants for screening for a
housing choice voucher. The Lottery will be held at least once a year and applicants will
have to apply every year. It is important to remember that your application for the lottery
will expire after this year if you are not selected by the random lottery.

2) QUESTION: How do I apply for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Lottery?

ANSWER: Yes. Every year in the Spring you have to re-apply if you were not selected in the
previous year.

ANSWER: No you do not. You need only to answer the questions asked in the on-line application
and certify that the information is true and accurate. No additional documents are
required at the time of your pre-application. Please remember that what you are
completing is an online pre-application for the lottery and not a guarantee of
final approval or an offer of housing services. Your final eligibility will be determined
when an offer of housing is made. Further documentation will be required and
verification will be made at that time.

ANSWER: You do not need to come to the AHA offices to apply. For your convenience a list of
publicly accessible computers that are accessible for free are included with these
questions. You may apply anywhere on this list or at any other computer that has a
connection to the internet.

Walk-in appointments cannot be accepted.

ANSWER: Once you complete your application you will have an opportunity to print a
receipt. More importantly, you will receive a confirmation number. This number is
proof you have submitted an application. Please write this number down and keep it
for your records. Please note that completing an application and receiving a
confirmation number does not guarantee acceptance nor is it an offer of
housing services. Further screening is required before an offer of housing can be made.

ANSWER: If your information changes after you have applied you will not be able to make these
changes to your application. What you could do is make a change of address with the
post office so that they may forward any correspondence that you might receive.

ANSWER: NO, the pre-application you complete between May 1, 2020 through May 31, 2020 will
not automatically put you on the Public Housing waiting list or the list of any other
program. When other housing programs open you will have to complete another separate
application at that time.

ANSWER: Pre-applications that were selected for screening through the Housing Choice Voucher
Lottery will be contacted by first-class mail. AHA will also publish the confirmation
numbers of the pre-applications that were selected on its website at www.abqha.org.
AHA may also use telephone, e-mail and text messages to contact households that were
elected. Despite all of these methods AHA considers its contact letter to be the official
notification of selection by the Housing Choice Voucher Lottery. The other methods of
communication should be considered unofficial reminders. www.abqha.org.

17) QUESTION: What happens if I am not selected through the lottery process?

ANSWER: Draws from the lottery may take place multiple times per year as HUD funding for
vouchers permits. If you are not selected the first draw please watch AHA website and
your mail for future notification. Anyone not selected will have their application expire at
the end of the calendar year. This means if you are not selected by the end of the calendar
year, you will have to re-apply the following year to be considered. If you do not receive
a voucher you must re-apply the following year to be considered.

receive a voucher?

ANSWER: NO, if you are selected in the Housing Choice Voucher Lottery that means you are
chosen to be screened for a voucher. Your household still has to pass all of the screening
requirements of the Housing Choice Voucher Program before you are issued a voucher to
use. Households who are selected through the lottery should not make any moving plan
nor sign any lease until directed so by an AHA housing specialist.

ANSWER: NO, whether you apply on the first day or the last day when the lottery is open, your
application will be treated the same way. Date and time of application no longer have an
