News from Mr. Armira-Gr. 2 Unidos
Los estudiantes de segundo grado Unidos en la clase del Señor Armira están aprendiendo
las rutinas de la clase y de la escuela. Ha sido muy emocionante ver a nuestros amigos en
clase y poder jugar con ellos afuera y tomar un descanso de la máscara. También hemos
estado leyendo libros en clase y estamos practicando como escoger un libro adecuado para
nosotros. Cada estudiante ha encontrado su propia manera de disfrutar de un libro y
ponerse cómodo, afuera o dentro de la clase.

Second grade students in Mr. Armira’s Unidos class are learning the routines of the class
and the school. It has been very exciting to see our friends in class, and to be able to play
outside with them and take a mask break. We have also been reading books in class, and
practicing how to choose a book that is right for us. Each student has found their own way
to enjoy a book, and get comfortable outside or inside class.

Science Gr. 7 & 8 Unidos
Concurso: Cambia tu huella de carbono - Cambia nuestro planeta
Nuestros estudiantes de Ciencias de 7mo y 8vo grados participaron en un concurso en
honor al Día del Planeta Tierra el pasado mes de abril organizado por la Escuela de West
Somerville. El tema del concurso fue “Cambiar tu huella de carbono - Cambiar al
planeta:” El tema refleja el entendimiento de nuestros estudiantes sobre la necesidad de la
humanidad de reducir nuestra huella de carbón. Las pancartas se enfocaron en los retos
que encaran nuestras comunidades como resultado del cambio climático. El tema
invitaba a diferentes interpretaciones relacionadas a la importancia de llamar la atención
sobre el impacto individual en el ambiente debido a las emisiones de gases tipo
invernadero.
Estamos muy orgullosos de presentar a los estudiantes de ESCS que recibieron un
reconocimiento por su trabajo:

Change your Carbon Footprint - Change our World Contest
Our 7th and 8th grade Science students participated in a poster contest to honor Earth
Day last April organized by West Somerville School. The theme of the contest focused
on our students understanding of the need for humans to reduce our carbon footprint and
on risks communities face as a result of climate change. The theme of the contest was
intended to invite a variety of interpretations related to the importance of addressing
greenhouse gas emissions on an individual basis.
We are very proud to announce ESCS students who received recognition for their
work:

Coordinadora del programa extra escolar de
Community Schools
Aunque el clima de mayo no ha sido tan brillante, no ha desanimado el espíritu de los
estudiantes de East Somerville. Todo el grupo pasa cada vez más tiempo y la mayor parte
del tiempo al aire libre, disfrutando del sol y preparándose para el comienzo oficial del
verano. Los clubs semanales del programa extra escolar han mantenido a los niños de East
muy ocupados y creativos. Comenzamos el mes haciendo una tarjeta de corazones y flores
para el Día de la madre.

Hemos estado haciendo un poco de todo, desde cantar y bailar
con todo nuestro corazón en el club de música y Zumba, hasta
aprender a escribir nuestros nombres en inglés antiguo y
descubrir algunos datos interesantes en el club de
experimentos científicos. El club de mantenerse en forma ha
sido como un viaje especial con los estudiantes para
comprender mejor la importancia del esfuerzo físico a través de
diferentes rutinas de ejercicio.
En nuestro club de Under the Sea, hemos leído libros
informativos e imaginativos. Aprendimos sobre la vida marina,
las propiedades del océano y del agua. Estamos haciendo
algunas artes y manualidades relacionadas con el océano. Por ejemplo, hicimos un acuario
con platos de papel, un océano en una botella, y un pez arcoíris.
Durante el mes de mayo la primavera está en plena floración y los colores de la naturaleza
son brillantes y coloridos. Los estudiantes plantaron en el jardín y se les dio la oportunidad
de regar las plantas y disfrutar de hacer más observaciones sobre ellas y como están
creciendo. Los estudiantes también aprendieron a identificar distintas plantas en el
vecindario.
A medida que el clima se vuelve más cálido requerimos que TODOS los estudiantes se
apliquen protector solar por la mañana y antes de salir al aire libre durante el programa
extra escolar. Tenemos tanto spray como loción y también fomentamos los sombreros y las
gafas de sol. La protección solar es muy importante en nuestro programa extraescolar y nos
tomamos muy en serio todas las precauciones. ¡Estamos muy contentos que ha llegado el
clima cálido pero la seguridad es lo primero!

Quiero darle mérito y expresar mi gratitud a nuestros maravillosos y fenomenales
maestros y personal de este programa extra escolar quienes han hecho que cada día sea
mejor y más brillante para nuestros estudiantes. Todos los estudiantes pueden tener éxito
porque TU haces que ello suceda. ¡Eres la chispa, la inspiración, la guía, la vela en la vida de
los estudiantes! ¡Te apreciamos a tí y todo lo que tú haces! ¡GRACIAS!

Even though May’s weather has not been so bright, it has not dampened East Somerville
student’s spirits! The whole group is spending more and most of the time outside, enjoying

the sunshine and preparing for the official beginning of summer! Weekly Clubs has kept the
East afterschoolers very busy and creative! We started the month by making some hearts
card and flowers for Mother's Day.
We have been doing a little bit of everything, from singing and dancing our hearts out in
music and Zumba club to learning how to write our names in old English to finding out
some cool facts in science experiment club. Fitness club has been a special journey with
students to better understand the importance of physical exertion through different
exercise routines. In our Under the Sea club, we have read both informational and
imaginative books. We learned about sea life, ocean properties, and properties of water. We
are doing some ocean related arts and crafts. For example, we made a paper plate
aquarium, an ocean in a bottle, and rainbow fish.
During the month of May spring is in full bloom and the colors in nature are bright and
colorful. The students planted in the garden and were being given the opportunity to water
the plants and enjoying making further observations on their plants and how they are
growing. Students also learned how to identify different plants in the neighborhood.
As the weather gets warmer, we require that ALL students have sunblock applied in the
morning and before we go outside in afterschool. We have both spray and lotion and
encourage hats and sunglasses as well. Sun safety is very important in afterschool and we
take precautions seriously. We are excited that the warm weather is upon us but safety
comes first!
I want to acknowledge and express our gratitude to all our wonderful and phenomenal
afterschool TEACHERS and STAFF to make every day better and brighter for our students!
Every student can succeed because YOU make that happen. You are the spark, the
inspiration, the guide, the candle in the life of the students! We appreciate you, and
everything you do! THANK YOU!

¡Unidos les desea que tengan un verano relajante, sano y seguro!
Unidos wishes everyone a relaxing, safe & healthy summer!
Animamos a los estudiantes a que sigan leyendo y jugando en los dos idiomas. Los cerebros
de los niños que son bilingües se desarrollan mucho durante los meses de verano. Incluso
actividades pequeñas pueden hacer una gran diferencia para mantener ambos idiomas
activos y que así se siga desarrollando en las mentes de los estudiantes.
We encourage students to keep reading and playing in both of their languages. Bilingual
brains grow and expand so much over the summer months. Even small activities can make
a huge difference in keeping both languages active and developing in students’ minds.

¡Estamos tan contentos de haber vuelto a la escuela y poder crear música juntos en clase!
Nuestros músicos de cuarto grado han estado aprendiendo sobre los instrumentos de la
orquestra. Terminamos esta unidad de estudio aprendiendo sobre la Orquestra Reciclada
de Paraguay y leímos la historia de “El violín de Ada”. Esta historia es sobre un pueblo que
está construido en un vertedero que usa basura para crear instrumentos para que los
estudiantes aprendan a tocar. ¡Creamos nuestros propios instrumentos de materiales
reciclados para celebrar esta increíble historia!
We are so excited to back in person and making music together in the classroom! Our
fourth grade musicians have been learning about the instruments of the orchestra.
We wrapped up this unit of study by learning about the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay
and read the story, "Ada's Violin," about a town built on a landfill that uses trash to create
instruments so the students can learn how to play. We created our own instruments out of
recycled materials to celebrate this amazing story!
