I give you a new commandment: As I have loved you, so you should also love one another! The night before he was betrayed,
and knowing he was about to be handed over to torture and death, the Lord celebrates with his disciples the rituals prescribed for
Passover, this was a way of bidding farewell to the ones he loved so much. The speeches pronounced during the last supper ac-
quire a particular importance for believers: these are to be interpreted as the ultimate desires of the Master. The words he pro-
nounced at the meal than holy night, resume in a very symbolic way, resume the whole of his teaching, the very core of Chris-
tian doctrine. To our surprise, he says nothing about getting even with those betraying him, he mentions not a word about re-
venge or a possible way of evading the Passion He was about to experience, but instead, he commands his friends to learn the
ways of love as a rule to follow, as a lifestyle to embrace with courage and passion, as a way of differentiating themselves from
those “in the world”.
The new commandment given to the disciples surrounding the table that memorable night, becomes the cornerstone of
Christian Doctrine for years and generations to come. It is in reference to love that we are to understand discipleship, and it is in
loving others that we can better embrace and bring the Gospel into action. No other religion in human history has dared to pre-
sent such a novelty, such an innovation, such freshness in the Divine-Human relationship. Jesus’ commandment to his disciples
on that night provoked human history to experience the Revolution of Love in ways that no one ever dared to dream of, for it is
in reference to Love that the whole of Christian life is to be read and understood. It is immersed in Love that the followers of
Jesus are called to live their entire lives.
Unless we dare to believe this is important and unless we have the courage to embrace the new commandment of Love
as the best way to better express our Christian discipleship, we risk becoming “clashing cymbals”, “noisy and loud gongs” with
no effective repercussion in the world. On us the responsibly to keep the commandment of love forever new and ever present.
On us the possibility to make out of Jesus’ desires a fresh option for today’s world. Let’s dare to love as the Master loved us!!!

¡Amaos los unos a los otros como yo los he amado! El mandamiento nuevo de Cristo en la noche antes de ser entregado, viene a
establecerse en la experiencia Cristiana como la más importante de todas las reglas. Mientras se despide, Jesús pide a sus amigos
establecer el amor como el signo distintivo de discipulado y desde entonces la comunidad creyente descubre el amor como el
centro del Evangelio en torno al cual tiene que girar todo el quehacer del Creyente. El Señor sabía que iba a ser entregado, tortu-
rado y crucificado, pero no deja que el impulso humano arrebate de su corazón la característica principal de su ministerio entre
los hombres; no hay palabras de enojo, no hay promesas arrancadas para la venganza, no permite que la amargura coloree su
discurso, por el contrario deja claro que es en torno al amor donde los seguidores auténticos tienen que fundar su enseñanza.
Es importante que nuestro quehacer como personas de fe, impregne el mundo de hoy con notas de amor. Queda claro
que a menos que nos esforcemos por instaurar en nuestra vida la ley del amor como regla principal, la violencia, la injusticia, la
opresión y tantas otras realidades de muerte seguirán imperando en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras familias, destruyéndolas y
causando daños muchas veces irreversibles. El anhelo de Jesús es que sus seguidores seamos capaces de amarnos como El lo
hizo, es decir incondicionalmente, sin dobleces y sin intereses mezquinos de por medio, capaces incluso de dar la vida por quie-
nes amamos.
Ojala que el Evangelio de hoy logre encontrar nido en el corazón de quienes nos llamamos seguidores del Divino Maes-
tro. Que la invitación al amor sea capaz de hacer eco en el corazón de quienes hoy nos congregamos para celebrar nuestra fe en
el Resucitado. Que podamos experimentar las ventajas de habitar en el amor y de vivir con un corazón libre de sentimientos con-
trarios a este mandamiento tan sublime y tan importante. El mejor testimonio que podemos dar como Iglesia hoy en día, es sin
duda manifestado plenamente en el esfuerzo de cada uno para hacer de la ley del amor una opción prioritaria en nuestra vida.
¡Por ese amor, reconocerán todos que somos discípulos de Cristo!

Non appena Giuda ha abbandonato il cenacolo, nella notte, Gesù affida il suo testamento spirituale ai suoi discepoli, annuncian-
do così la sua partenza per la casa del Padre, condizione indispensabile per la glorificazione di Dio e del figlio dell’uomo. Rima-
niamo sorpresi dai termini che scandiscono l’inizio di questo discorso d’addio: «Ora… subito… per poco». Di quale intervallo
di tempo di tratta? Senza dubbio del tempo che segue la pasqua, durante il quale Gesù, già nel pieno possesso della sua gloria
nel seno del Padre, ne attende ancora, con la sua chiesa, la piena manifestazione. Parole inquietanti vengono pronunciate all’ini-
zio dell’attesa, che è anche la nostra. Gesù non sarà più con i discepoli. Non perché ha deciso di lasciarli soli, abbandonati a se
stessi, ma perché devono passare dall’abitudine della sua presenza fisica, alla fede nella sua presenza invisibile, nel cuore stesso
dell’assenza. Sperimentare per mezzo della fede, la sua presenza nell’assenza, è una delle caratteristiche fondamentali della vita
cristiana fino al suo ritorno.
Ma c’è un altro aspetto, altrettanto essenziale: risuscitare la presenza del figlio dell’uomo, attraverso la pratica del comandamen-
to nuovo, amandoci gli uni gli altri come egli ci ha amati! Quest’amore reciproco è garanzia e manifestazione della presenza
permanente del risorto in mezzo ai suoi. L’amore scambievole è dunque il comportamento specifico dei cristiani nel tempo che
va dalla partenza di Gesù al suo ritorno definitivo. È la carità, frutto dell’amore di Gesù per i suoi, che rende i cristiani discepoli
perfetti e rivela la presenza invisibile del Signore della Chiesa: «Vedete come si amano»; insieme all’eucarestia, non c’è altro
segno definitivo, perché si tratta del nostro modo concreto, l’unico valido, di vivere la fede pasquale.
Il valore dell’esistenza — Gesù è glorificato e partecipa alla vita del Padre. Dio non vive più soltanto nella sua sfera celeste:
d’ora in poi vive anche nel cuore dell’uomo. Per un ebreo, essere glorificato, significa dare valore alla propria esistenza, rivelare
le proprie reali capacità. Il prezzo dell’esistenza, ciò per cui vale la pena d’essere vissuta, è l’amore: l’amore che Gesù ha mani-

The French Revolution swept the church in France
away in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every
possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering church-
es, but using them as staging areas for pagan raves and
romps. While millions of faithful simply went under-
ground and hung on for the ride, even the seven-day week
was demolished along with the names of the months.
What emerged from the chaos was the Napoleonic Code
of 1792 governing church life, and therefore marriage law
in France, French Canada, and elsewhere. The code
makes civil marriage mandatory for all citizens.
In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to
the City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil mar-
riage, usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about the
duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing of chil-
dren. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone goes off to
change into more festive attire for the wedding liturgy,
featuring consent, the exchange of rings, and the nuptial
blessing. Sadly, only a minority of citizens today cele-
brate even the civil form of the rite, and a fraction of
those continue on to the church. For those who do cele-

Non per proselitismo ma per attrazione. Il comandamento nuovo.
Poteva sgorgare soltanto dal cuore e dalle labbra di Cristo il comandamento nuovo. Egli soltanto
ha potuto gridare al mondo: «Che vi amiate gli uni gli altri». Soltanto Cristo poteva determinare un
chiaro ed inconfutabile termine di paragone: «Come io ho amato voi così amatevi anche voi gli uni
gli altri». Egli stesso aveva stabilito come esprimere il massimo dell'amore: «Non esiste un amore
più grande di questo, dare la vita...». Esattamente come Egli ha fatto con la sua volontaria immola-
zione sulla croce. Gesù aggiunge che sarà proprio il compimento del suo nuovo comandamento,
praticato eroicamente da suoi fedeli, a convincere altri ad abbracciare la stessa fede. E' vero che
l'amore, quando è vissuto nel modo migliore, sull'esempio di Cristo, esercita un fascino irresistibile
e diventa il migliore mezzo di attrazione alla fede. Dobbiamo riflettere anche sul contrario; viene da
pensare che se il cristianesimo non ha ancora raggiunto la sua migliore espressione e diffusione in
questo nostro mondo, lo dobbiamo sicuramente anche alla mancanza di amore da parte di noi cre-
denti. Quando Gesù parla della sua glorificazione, include nel suo discorso tutta la sua storia,
conformata perfettamente alla volontà del Padre, include anche la sua passione. Ciò vuol dire che
l'amore del cristiano passa inevitabilmente nell'arduo percorso del calvario, non si arresta, anche
se ne è tentato, nella gloria e nella beatitudine del Tàbor. Amore è anche sacrificio, conduce però
sempre verso la pasqua, verso la glorificazione. Questa è la vera forza del cristianesimo, questa è
l'energia che, sgorgata dalla croce, diventa amore, diventa spesso anche passione che è però prelu-
dio di risurrezione.

BUILDING UP THE CHURCH
It is certainly an important ministry to go and make disciples; it is equally important to ensure the con-
tinued strengthening of these disciples. Paul and Barnabas, in our reading from Acts today, are not only adding
new disciples to the church of Christ. They are making sure that the work of the church will continue by ap-
pointing elders and otherwise organizing these new communities of faith. Structure is essential to the work of
the church. Just as the skeleton gives form to the body, the organizational structure of the church ensures that
the church stays true to its mission, that new disciples are well formed in the message of salvation, that the
work of the church can continue from generation to generation.
THE WORK OF THE CHURCH
Today’s second reading, from Revelation, and the Gospel reading from John together help us to understand the
radical nature of Christ’s message of love. In Revelation, we are told that now the sea, the symbol of the chaos of the
past, is no more. The new Jerusalem has come down from heaven and is joined with humanity for all time. Christ dwells
within each of us, the baptized, in a radical new way of joining together. Christ is here, now, for all time, within each
and every one of us. This is why Jesus’ commandment of love is so very new. We are commanded to love each other as
Christ loves, for when we love, we reveal Christ’s presence among us. This is a love beyond any human concept of love,
a love without concern for cost, a love that calls us to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, and grant mercy to enemies.
This is the love demanded of us by our baptism, the radical love of others as we are loved by God. This love is our work,
