Her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love! This Sunday, believers in Christ, are called to reflect in a very
challenging Gospel passage. Reclined at table, the Lord welcomes the humble gesture of a sinful woman who comes to him and
anoints His feet while crying and showing great contrition. Such an expression of humility and devotion is very well understood by
Jesus; however, those at table with Him seem surprised and even offended, the host reaches the point of doubting Jesus’ identity as a
true prophet: Were this one a prophet, He should know the type of woman this one is! Indeed, compassion and charity can jeopardize
our image in dangerous ways… Jesus could not careless about it, but instead of pleasing those who saw themselves as righteous peo-
ple, the Lord chose to embrace the poor sinner at His feet.
Hard to understand the messianic mission as a Divine Project that focusses on sinners, the infirmed and those rejected by soci-
ety. Difficult to fully grasp the idea of a God whose particular interest in the outcast of society, many times confuses and angers the
“good ones” those who believe they deserve the recognition of neighbors because of their adequate and many times self righteous ways
of living. An accurate reading of the Gospel can give us an idea of the Lord’s particular attention to the anawim (that is the little ones,
the pariah ones) without rejecting those who embrace the righteous paths; in fact out of the Gospel we can obtain the actual confirma-
tion of God’s desire to make just one saved people without divisions. In fact that is what the promise of the Kingdom is all about: one
reality where all can identified themselves as children of the One True God, whose divine heart knows nothing about borders or segre-
gation.
As a faith community we are also called to bring this beautiful message into action. Our worship and active participation in
Church must lead each one to recognize the others as brothers and sisters in Christ. A particular concern ought to be shown towards the
little ones in our community, for the ones we judged unworthy and/or pitiful are precisely the ones who preoccupy Jesus in a particular
manner. Our struggle to welcome everyone can be alleviated if instead of focusing on the wrong they do, we stress the good they may
carry within; just as Jesus did, He decided not to blame the woman of today’s Gospel for her mistakes, but instead allowed Himself to
be impressed for the great love she dared to show…

¡Tu fe te ha salvado, vete en Paz! La fuerza de esta expresión se vuelve causa de murmuración entre los presentes a la cena esa noche.
¿Cómo se atreve Jesús a otorgar algo tan grande y valioso como el perdón de sus faltas a esa mujer que según el juicio de los comensa-
les eran grandes y graves? ¿Qué autoridad le sostiene que se atreve a hacer algo tan serio en alguien que aparentemente no valía la gran
pena? La actitud de los que se encontraban con Jesús esa noche al igual que el juicio despiadado del anfitrión que lo había invitado a
compartir su mesa, refleja de modo directo la confusión tan tremenda que un acto inesperado de bondad puede causar en el corazón de
los buenos.
No sabemos cuáles hayan sido los pecados de esa mujer, tampoco sabemos mucho de su historia pero eso parece no importar-
le a Cristo; el Señor decide acoger el acto de humildad que ella llevaba a cabo al lavarle los pies y secárselos con delicadeza y lo pre-
mia con la gracia maravillosa de la liberación. Esta debilidad tan increíble de nuestro Señor por los pecadores, los rechazados, por los
que nosotros consideramos los “malos” es algo que nunca seremos capaces de comprender si en vez de enfocarnos en el corazón mise-
ricordioso del Dios que adoramos, continuamos a señalar sin caridad las faltas de los que nos rodean. Mientras otros se fijaron en los
muchos pecados que se le conocían a esa mujer, Jesús decidió fijarse en lo mucho que había amado, en la tremenda capacidad que su
corazón tenia para el amor.
Ojala que nuestra comunidad de Fe se descubra enriquecida con esta experiencia tan increíble que la Iglesia nos narra este
Domingo. Que la actitud de Jesús nos conmueva el corazón de tal manera que nuestros juicios se vean más bien influenciados por la
compasión y el bien que los demás hacen y no tanto por sus errores. Que al igual que Jesús lo hizo con esta mujer, también nosotros
seamos capaces de descubrir el bien callado que todos somos capaces de hacer, y que la invitación a la libertad y el don de la paz que
Cristo le ofreció a esta pecadora se haga también regalo para cada uno de los creyentes… dejemos que la Fe inunde nuestra vida pues
promete cambiarla para bien.

Luca manifesta a più riprese il suo interesse per la risurrezione dei morti. Il pubblico a cui si rivolge vede in questo la grande novità del
cristianesimo. Il ritorno alla vita del ragazzo di Naim, è descritto unicamente nel suo vangelo, in un brano che presenta Gesù come un
grande profeta. In realtà l’episodio presenta molte analogie con i miracoli di Elia e di Eliseo, ciascuno dei quali richiamò alla vita il
figlio di una vedova. Ma mentre essi avevano dovuto compiere lunghe preghiere e tutta una serie di gesti, qui non troviamo nulla di
simile: bastano una parola ed un gesto di Gesù, e tutto è compiuto.
L’evangelista della tenerezza divina, Luca costruisce il suo racconto in modo da suggerire l’incarnarsi della benevolenza Dio nel fremi-
to di commozione che Gesù prova di fronte ad una vedova, ad una madre che piange la morte del suo unico figlio. Richiamando
quest’ultimo alla vita, il messia realizza le antiche profezie e prepara la risposta che darà a Giovanni Battista: «I ciechi riacquistano la
vista, gli zoppi camminano… e i morti risuscitano» (Lc. 7,22). Per la prima volta la morte indietreggia davanti a Gesù che è «la risurre-
zione e la vita», come Dio, unico Signore della vita e della morte. Non per nulla, nel corso del racconto, Luca attribuisce a Gesù il tito-
lo di «Signore». Di conseguenza, leggendo questo brano, il credente non può non pensare al figlio unico di un’altra vedova — Maria
— che, morto sulla croce, uscirà vivo dalla tomba nella luce della Pasqua.
Il prodigioso ritorno alla vita del figlio della vedova non può che ispirarci una grande speranza di fronte alla morte. Non è forse il sim-
bolo della nostra risurrezione futura, che sarà ancora più straordinaria perché, ben più che restituirci alla vita terrena, ci farà partecipare
alla vita stessa di Dio? Ma questo miracolo ci invita anche ad unirci al concerto di lode che sale verso Gesù per le molteplici risurrezio-
ni spirituali attraverso cui egli restituisce alla vita della chiesa, loro madre, tutti coloro che ascoltano la sua parola: «Alzati».

Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What
good news that must have been to David and those
who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their
sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and for-
giveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good
news would have been too good to believe, too diffi-
cult to imagine. But there he is in today’s Gospel, the
God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is
forgiven because of her great love.
There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if on-
ly we love enough!
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Last week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow
or two with the image of the deacons scurrying through
the streets of Rome, or perhaps galloping on horseback,
with fragments of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s
liturgy. These would be dropped into the chalice at out-
lying celebrations, presided over by presbyters, to ex-
press unity with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind
the presbyters that they were not free agents. The Coun-
cil of Laodicea forbade the custom of the fermentum in
the year 348. Generally, one of the rules of interpreting
law is that people don’t make laws about things that
aren’t happening. So, by mid-fourth century, we have an
important clue that what had once been a Roman custom
had become widespread.
Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its
related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the
mid-nineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from
the mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some An-
glican dioceses for a fragment of the host from the bish-
op’s Holy Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism Mass)
to be carried to every parish. On “Maundy Thurs-
day” (our Holy Thursday), the fragment is dropped into
the chalice to signify the parish’s communion with the
bishop. This modern revival of the fermentum is differ-
ent from the “co-mingling” action we are used to, in
which a fragment of the consecrated bread is dropped

La verità sulla propria vita.
Il messaggio che ci viene dalla liturgia della Parola è molto importante per tutti e in particolare per chi
detiene il potere con quale è tentato di giustificare tutte le sue scelte, anche quelle contro ogni logica e mo‐
ralità. Davide (prima lettura) ha commesso adulterio, ha ucciso il marito della donna sedotta e l'ha presa
come moglie. Dio ordina al profeta Natan di recarsi da lui: gli narra il fatto ipotetico di una grave ingi‐
ustizia subìta da un povero da parte di un prepotente. Davide freme di rabbia e dice con forza: Chi è
quell'uomo che ha fatto questo? Merita la morte! Natan gli dice: Tu sei quell'uomo! E gli svela quello che
avrebbe voluto tener nascosto. Davide risponde con il pentimento, immortalato nel salmo 50. Anche il bra‐
no del vangelo ci riporta allo stesso messaggio. E' peccatrice la donna, è vero... ma il fariseo non è innocen‐
te... Dinanzi ai pensieri di giudizio e di condanna di Simone, il fariseo, nei confronti di una donna pecca‐
trice prostrata ai piedi del Maestro, mentre bagna di lacrime i suoi piedi, li asciuga con i capelli, li bacia e li
cosparge di profumo, Gesù pone una questione: Simone, ti sembra che si mostri più riconoscente: colui che
ha avuto il condono di cinquecento denari, o colui a cui ne sono stati condonati solo cinquanta? La risposta
di Simone è ovvia: Chi è stato maggiormente beneficato... E Gesù, pendendo le difesa della donna, gli svela
come anche lui è debitore, è peccatore... Non è giusto quindi infierire contro chi ha mancato di più, ma
comportarsi come il Signore che perdona entrambi suscitando nei loro cuori sentimenti di gratitudine. Tut‐
to questo però è frutto della fede viva nella salvezza donataci dalla misericordia di Dio più che guadagnata
dalle nostre buone opere, come ci insegna la seconda lettura. Qualche anno addietro andava di moda una
canzone che diceva: La verità ti fa male... lo so... Ci sarebbe bisogno di tanti Natan che abbiano il coraggio
di dirci la verità circa la nostra vita... Purtroppo molte volte la verità genera nemici... allora si preferisce
tacere e magari adulare... e questo anche contro l'ordine di Gesù che esorta alla correzione. La correzione
produce sofferenza sul momento, poi però porta gioia... L'esempio di Davide e dei Santi ci aiuti ad acco‐
gliere con umiltà la parola di correzione, da chiunque venga.

ESPERANZA Y PERDÓN
Había algunas concepciones interesantes sobre el
pecado que prevalecían en la época de las Escrituras
hebreas. Estaba la creencia de que Dios castigaba
inmediatamente el pecado. Los que sufrían alguna
enfermedad o desgracia eran, por lo tanto, pecadores
que recibían su merecido del Todopoderoso.
La primera lectura de hoy nos muestra a otro tipo
de Dios. Cuando David admite su pecado, Natán de-
clara: “El Señor te perdona tu pecado” (2 Samuel
12:13b). Aquí no hay un Dios vengativo sino un
Dios misericordioso. ¡Qué buena nueva debe haber
sido eso para David y para los que, como él, eran lo
suficientemente honestos como para admitir su peca-
do!
Jesús es la buena nueva de la misericordia y el
perdón de Dios hecho carne. Sin Jesús, quizás la bue-
na nueva hubiera sido demasiado buena como para
creerla, demasiado difícil de imaginar. Pero allí está
en el Evangelio de hoy, el Dios-hombre, perdonando
a una pecadora y declarando que está perdonada de-
bido a su gran amor.
¡Hay esperanza, entonces, para el resto de noso-
tros pecadores, si tan sólo amamos lo suficiente!
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En 1910, cuatro años antes de iniciar el Día de las
Madres, el pueblo de Estados Unidos empezó a cele-
brar ocasionalmente un día para los padres de familia.
Pero, no fue hasta 1972 que se fijó un día oficial para
el papá. Poco a poco esta fecha del segundo domingo
de junio se ha ido expandiendo al resto del mundo
con algunas excepciones. En Italia por ejemplo, la
fiesta del padre se celebra el 19 de marzo, día de san
José.
Durante la Revolución Industrial del siglo dieci-
nueve, José, esposo de María recibió su primera fiesta
oficial. La Iglesia, preocupada por el ingreso del padre
a las fábricas, propuso a este santo varón como ejem-
plo de lo que los padres deben ser en la vida de sus
hijos e hijas; ejemplos de fe, ternura y trabajo. Aún
en nuestro tiempo, el Rito del Bautismo de niños in-
siste que el padre, junto con la madre, deben ser los
mayores maestros de sus hijos. Al igual que José, el
papá debe cuidar y proteger a su familia, enseñarle a
los niños a trabajar y ser honestos para el bien de la

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
IF THIS MAN WERE A PROPHET
In today’s Gospel, Simon observes Jesus accepting the ministrations of a sinful woman. He questions whether Jesus can be
a prophet since Jesus apparently does not know “what sort of woman this is” (Luke 7:39). Jesus, however, knows far more than what
Simon observes about the woman. Jesus knows not only her sinfulness but her great love as well. And Jesus responds, not to Simon’s
verbal objections, but to his unspoken criticism. Here, indeed, is a prophet who knows our thoughts and sinfulness, but knows our
goodness, too.
People frequently judge each other by externals, just as Simon did. They categorize each other and, having been catego-
rized, they can do little to escape. The woman in the Gospel was “a sinful woman in the city” (Luke 7:37). Her gestures to Jesus of
love and humility were, therefore, overlooked by Simon. A sinner can, apparently, do no good.
Jesus sees things differently. He points out the goodness of the woman and appreciates her love in spite of her failures.
Likewise, Jesus knows we are all sinners, but he loves us anyway.
GOD’S GRACIOUS GIFT
Paul today gives tribute to “the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20). This former
persecutor of Christians now boasts of his faith in Jesus. How grateful he must have been for the gift of forgiveness! The God who
called Paul saw beyond his sinfulness, saw one who loved God passionately if misguidedly, and redirected his efforts.
For contemporary humans, forgiveness is as difficult today as it was in the time of the story of David; it is as hard as it was
in the time of Simon. We humans have trouble seeing beyond externals and so easily fall into the habit of judging others unfairly.
Jesus’ example calls us to look beyond externals, to find the goodness in each person, to
