Adult Formation Series: The Arts and Faith at 9:00 am

immensely important parts of our culture and our lives. What do the arts
have to do with the Christian faith? Should Christians engage in the arts,
and if so, why? How does art deepen the experiences of worship? What
is the role of beauty in art and in worship? This class will be a highly
interactive introduction to start us thinking about the arts and the
Christian faith.

stories about music, performance, and the spiritual connection.

St. Mark’s in Motion

Exhibit Opening and Reception on
Friday, September 10, 2021, at 7:00 pm
From 2009 to 2019, parishioner and photographer Peter Vagt took over 4,000 pictures of what he
saw and experienced here at St. Mark’s: our very lively and vibrant church life. Two years ago,
Beth Trebelhorn-Treleven and the Art Committee began to plan an exhibit with the pictures. After
reviewing the photographs and selecting 100 of them, they aptly named the exhibit St. Mark’s in
Motion.
It took a year to select the photographs, design the exhibit, and prepare the 14 panels of
photographs you can see on the walls of the nave. Last spring, the exhibit was ready, but the
pandemic got in the way of installation. Now, St. Mark’s in Motion is here for us all to see and enjoy.
From a newborn baby being baptized, to a 97-year-old priest and scholar lighting a candle, you
will see dear friends and family, multiple years’ worth of beloved Feasts of the Virgin of
Guadalupe, Holy Week services, concerts, dramatic presentations, and as many pumpkins as
pictures Peter has taken. Walk through the nave, look, and see, and you will fall in love with St.
Mark’s all over again.
The Art Committee is planning a formal opening and reception on Friday, September 10, 2021, at

Stitches for God: Needlepoint Art in Our Churches on
September 18, 2021 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
The ECW Altar Guild Conference is planned and you are welcome to join us! Our
keynote topic will be needlepoint in the church and the keynote presenter is
Master artisan Nancy Lukoskie of Fancywork Finishing of Easton, MD. Nancy
has worked to restore, repair, and create needlepoint pieces in churches across the
country, most notably at the Washington National Cathedral.
The in person Conference will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in New Lenox, but it will also
be available online. Registration will be required.

23EXPLORING OUR THEOLOGICAL HERITAGE
Hello everyone at St. Mark’s! Our course, “Exploring
our Theological Heritage,” resumes on Thursday,
September 9, at 7:30 pm.
This year, we will focus on the Reformation, including the 100 years leading up to it, the
subsequent catholic “Counter-Reformation,” and the birth of our Anglican denomination. Those
roughly two hundred years saw tremendous changes in the Church in Continental Europe and
England. Understanding those changes is an essential component of understanding the state of
the Church today.
We will rely heavily on selected texts, rather than internet resources. Used copies of the texts are
available on the internet. There is no fee for this course, but you will need to acquire your own
copies of the texts.
This won’t be a “lecture” course. Every participant will be able to research and report on issues
that the class chooses. We will explore the material together.
Because of the rapid spread of the Delta variant of the Coronavirus, we will continue to
meet via Zoom. We meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm sharp. Most class sessions will end
between 8:45 pm and 9:00 pm.

24What are twelve-step groups? From Wikipedia: Twelve-step programs are mutual aid
organizations for the purpose of recovery from substance addictions, behavioral addictions, and
compulsions. Developed in the 1930s, the first twelve-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA),
aided its membership to overcome alcoholism. Since that time, dozens of other organizations have
been derived from AA's approach to address problems as varied as drug addiction, compulsive
gambling, and overeating. All twelve-step programs utilize a version of AA's suggested twelve
steps first published in the 1939 book Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred
Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism.

very fitting for these times. Every Tuesday night, we start with gathering time at 8:15
pm and the Office begins at 8:30 pm. The service is brief, about twenty minutes long.

St. Mark’s Saturday Morning Men’s Group! We are all HYBRID. We offer two ways
to enjoy fellowship with other men of St. Mark’s.
Option 1: In person at the St. Mark’s Library. For those of you who are vaccinated/feel
comfortable meeting in person/are local, please join us in the Library where we will follow current
CDC guidelines: 3 feet apart, masks on when not eating or drinking, and limited capacity.

We're so excited to announce Kickoff Sunday, September 12, at 10:15 am
to start off our Sunday School Year! Miss Gina (K-5), Miss Diane (Pre-K), & Miss Norma
(Nursery) look forward to seeing your children!
Pre-K Students will meet in the undercroft on the lower level and K-5 students will meet in Mahon
Hall.
Children Pre-K and up, join us for in person Sunday School on Sunday
mornings at St. Mark's in Mahon Hall. We begin at 10:30 am with a
Godly Play Presentation from Miss Gina. We will have "wondering"
questions and an art response time. Children will be brought to their
parents in church after Sunday School.

Altar Flower Donations - Parishioners are invited to make a donation for Sunday
flowers in honor of birthdays, anniversaries, and in memory of loved ones. The suggested
donation is $40 per Sunday and the donation must be received the week before flowers
are scheduled. Checks should be written to St. Mark’s and on the memo line note

thanksgiving for their 62nd wedding anniversary.

An Update on Masks and Social Distancing at St. Mark's
The St. Mark's Health & Wellness: Gathering Safely Committee (formerly Reopening Committee)
is continuing to carefully monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and follow the guidance of the
Diocese of Chicago, DCFS, CDC and State of Illinois regarding mask wearing and social
distancing.
For Sunday and other worship services:
• maximum attendance in the sanctuary is 50% (150).
• reservations are no longer required for in person attendance.
• social distancing is recommended at 3 feet and seating in alternating pews
continues.
• congregational singing is permitted (all wearing masks).
• everyone wears a mask except for children ages 2 and under.
• if you don’t have a mask, we will provide you with one.
• masks optional for outdoor coffee hour.
We will continue with hybrid church services for virtual and in-person attendance at the 10:30 am
Eucharist in English and the 1:00 pm Eucharist in Spanish. We also have an 8:00 am in-person
Eucharist in English.
For small groups and meetings
• for groups meeting indoors where everyone is vaccinated, mask-wearing is
recommended.
• meetings in Mahon Hall may now have up to 75 people, mask-wearing required.
• for gatherings of over 20 people in Mahon Hall where food is served, masks are
required.
Why are we continuing with masks during worship and large gatherings? Because children
ages 11 and under are not able to be vaccinated, St. Mark's will continue for the time being to
require masks for everyone, except for children ages 2 and under. St. Mark's is committed to the
safety of everyone by wearing masks during worship services. We will continue to monitor the
COVID-19 statistics and will look forward to making mask-wearing optional in the future based
on DCFS and State of Illinois guidance.
