Christmas Message from Dean Tom Callard
                                                             Are you excited about Christmas?

This is the question we’ve chosen to ask this year as part of celebrating the
holiday within the Cathedral, and inviting the community outside of the Ca-
thedral to celebrate and rejoice with us. We want people to think of it and
be aware of their own answer to this question. We want people to come up
against it. Are they excited about Christmas?

There’s no wrong answer. Excited or not, Christmas is nearly upon us. Excit-
ed or not, Christmas will come. Excited or not, the “Christmas season” has been with us since about the day after
Halloween, the moment the stores got rid of the candy and put up the Christmas decorations. Whether or not we are
excited does not really matter in the big picture. But still we ask the question because we want people to consider: if
you’re not excited about Christmas, why not?

What about Christmas is not exciting? What about Christmas does not do it for you, either this year or in years past,
or perhaps you’ve never really been excited for Christmas. I’ve known people for whom the holidays are a complete
wreck, every year, for whom bad experiences and losses and personal tragedies have coalesced around this season, or
been magnified during this season, and they are definitely not excited about Christmas.

I’ve known others who just see Christmas as a consumer holiday, for whom the whole message of the birth of the
Lord is lost, buried and absent, and so their excitement is wrapped up in their ability to have enough money to spend.
And I’ve known others who were once excited but have since lost their excitement in the haze of adult life. If you’re
not excited about Christmas, why not?

At the heart of it, stripping away all of the cultural and material and social and familial wrapping that goes around
Christmas every year, and getting down to the center and the essence of Christmas, there’s actually something very
exciting going on. For unto us is born in the city of David, a Savior. Or, as it says in Revelation, “See, the home of
God is among mortals. He will dwell with them, they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them.” (Rev-
elation 21:3)

Being with me, God has found a home. As it says, there’s a space for the dwelling of God in my life, the one who
created us and who gives us such unconditional love as surpasses our faults and limits. God has found with us a home.
And if what that means today is not exciting, what it points to for the future should be. For God is with the poor, and
with those of us who seek an end to poverty. God is with the sick, and with those who seek relief from their distress.
God is with the dying and those who despair, and ever present in the most difficult of all human situations and most
challenged of all human beings. God is in children. God is in prisons. God is in refugee camps. God is in me. God is
in you.

God is there, with hope, possibility, and all that Jesus Christ brings. And it’s exciting to imagine all that Jesus Christ
will bring. It is exciting to imagine, isn’t it, that which can be, with God and through God, with us being empowered
and directed with Christ.

My prayer for you and your family and for our world is that we can find the excitement about Christmas within us
today, and within that which is promised for tomorrow. For it’s no small thing—Christ is here.

The Longest Night of the Year
                                                              by Deacon Linda Taupier

Each year since 1990, on or near the winter solstice and the longest night of the year,
the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) has sponsored National Homeless
Persons’ Memorial Day. The hope is to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness,
and to remember our homeless friends.

We here at Christ Church Cathedral observe this memorial with a service of remem-
brance for those in our area who have died during the past year. There are at least 18 homeless people we know of
who died this year in Springfield. Each name is read, and a candle is lit in their memory. Others also come forward to
light candles for friends and relatives they wish to remember and the service is heartwarming.

We do this in conjunction with Church without Walls, Loaves and Fishes, Open Pantry, as well as Pastor Jack Derose
and South Congregation al Church. Please join us on December 19, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. for this yearly celebration of
life. There is a reception following the service in the Kendrick Room, sponsored by Open Pantry.

                           The Outreach Committee Thanks You!
The Outreach Committee would like to thank all of those from our Cathedral who participated in the caroling
event this week for residents at Ludlow Correctional facility organized by REC (Residents Encountering Christ).

We also want to thank those who donated to Square One’s Thanksgiving Food Drive, ensuring many more
bountiful meals for families in our area. Also, in January we will be bringing the baby dolls and other items
donated to our CCC Classroom to the children and their teachers. Anyone interested in joining us for this joyful
event should contact Barbara Loh or Jahn Hart (bploh8@gmail.com or jahnhart@sbcglobal.net).

Thanks and Christmas blessings from all the members of the Outreach Committee for all you are doing to
make CCC a place of abundant giving in Jesus’ name.
