Page 7Today is the last of the “Bread” Sundays, bringing to an end five Sundays of semi-continuous
proclamation of John’s sixth chapter, the “Bread of Life” discourse. This year one of those passages was
replaced by the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Next Sunday we resume the semi-
continuous proclamation of the gospel according to Mark.
The readings focus on choices that have to be made in relation to God. The first reading has Joshua
challenge the people who have just entered the Promised Land to remember that God has done great
things for them. Will they commit themselves to serve the Lord or will they go after other gods? Joshua
and his tribe proclaim the powerful words, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” That sort of
commitment involves the reality that serving the Lord is not always easy or convenient. Faith is the key
component in our relationship with our loving God, trusting that God will always be there no matter what happens.
The letter to the Ephesians talks about relationships among different groupings and classes of people. The key to
understanding all relationships centers on the opening phrase, “Be subordinate to one another out of
reverence for Christ.” It does not advocate the submission of one person to another, most especially in
the context of marriage. This manner of relating demands that all relationships, especially that of
spouses, be modeled on how Christ deals with the other, no matter who or when. Relationships demand a choice
that leads one to be attuned to one’s needs as well as the needs of the other. In this fashion, we strive to
be “bread of life” for each other. Christ is the model of the one who came so that we all might have life. As
of Christ’s disciples, we too are called to be nourishment for one another, so that all might have life.
The reading from John has some of Jesus’ own disciples rejecting the “hard words” that he is saying, and
deciding to part ways with Jesus. Usually, this is understood to be a rejection of Jesus’ affirmation that they
are to eat his flesh and drink his blood in order to be united with God and have eternal life. While this is partially
true, the real reason that some of the disciples part ways with Jesus is their refusal to accept Jesus’ strong
Johannine affirmation that he is the one come down from heaven. They hear Jesus declaring himself to be
divine, and they find it extremely difficult to accept. For John, salvation consists in believing in Jesus as the divine
one sent by God.
Jews affirm the oneness of God. Jesus is human yet he claims to come from God, claiming divinity for himself.
This goes against everything most Jews believed. They find it an extremely “hard” claim and cannot continue
to follow Jesus. The conflict centers on faith, and their willingness to believe what Jesus was proclaiming about
himself. They are challenged to believe that Jesus came down from heaven and will return to heaven. Jesus has
come to nourish us as the “bread of life.” Do they believe that or not? Obviously some do not, while others
affirm that Jesus has “the words of eternal life.” Therefore, in the name of all believers, then and now, Peter
proclaims “We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”
These “Bread of Life” discourse readings invite us to reflect on how we share our “bread” with others, on
how we respond to our baptismal call to reach out and show care and concern for the other. This would
include people in our communities, as well as all those migrants and immigrants that knock on our border doors.
Jesus came down from heaven to model for us what true loving relationships demand. Welcoming,
embracing and nourishing the poor, the oppressed and the foreigner
is an integral component of what Jesus demands.
Do you believe in Jesus and what he demands? If, like Peter, you can
affirm that belief, then continually challenge yourself to be “bread of Sunday, August 22
life” for others, no matter how demanding or costly. Such a “hard” 1st Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b
saying is the core of our baptismal commitment. How do you affirm your Psalm: Psalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21 (9a)
baptismal commitment in your daily encounters? Jesus is the model. So 2nd Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32
sing joyfully the refrain of responsorial Psalm 34, “Taste and see the Gospel: John 6:60-69
goodness of the Lord,” and commit yourself to sharing “bread” with
all others at all times, whether convenient or inconvenient. Sunday, August 29

Obviamente, algunos no

Minister of Hospitality Formation
Calling all friendly and helpful parishioners! Please consider serving our parish as a Minister of Hospitality.
Welcoming those gathering for prayer is an important ministry and sets the tone for the experience we have at
liturgies. If you like to help and want to share your time/talent with our parish, but don’t have a lot of time to share
outside of the time you come to Mass, this might be a great ministry for you!
Please plan to attend the formation session for Ministers of Hospitality on Tuesday, August 24 at 7:00PM in the
church.
Please sign up on the Registration Form in the Gathering Space or on the website, www.stsabinaparish.org.
What do Ministers of Hospitality do?
• Ministers of Hospitality are responsible for welcoming people as they arrive for Mass.
• They create an atmosphere of hospitality and make sure general needs of our community are met as they
arrive at church.
• They take up the collection and find members of our community to present the offering during Mass.
• Ministers of Hospitality help facilitate processions and assist during large or special liturgies when things may
be a bit unfamiliar for the assembly.
• They often pass out needed materials (bulletins, candles, special envelopes).
Who can be a Minister of Hospitality?
• Any member of our parish, male or female, who is interested in extending hospitality to our community at Mass
• Adults and high school youth (younger children may serve as greeters but must have adult supervision to
assist with the offering)
Please register for the formation on the sign-up
sheet in the gathering space, on the website or
contact Susan Ratigan at
susan@stsabinaparish.org or 816-979-3158. If
you would like to serve as a Minister of
Hospitality, but can’t attend this session, please
contact Susan. There will be future formation
dates. Thank you!
