THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT - March 15, 2020– TERCER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
Invited into Covenant with God This Sunday’s Gospel is the beautiful story of Jesus‘ encounter with the Samaritan woman, the
woman at the well. In the Old Testament, “well” stories were where one met his or her spouse (e.g. Isaac, Moses, Ruth). St John
uses the well account to underscore God’s relationship of covenant, i.e., marriage, with the Samaritan (pagan) people. As with the
Israelites, the marriage covenant relationship with God is spiritual or mystical. The use of the title “Samaritan woman”, rather than a
person’s name, indicates the symbolic role she plays. To remain hidden due to her reputation, she goes to the well at the hottest
time of the day, high noon, in order to avoid other people. In His conversation with her, Jesus extends greater dignity and respect to
the woman, than she gave herself. He offers her living water, the kind that gives spiritual strength and sustenance. The woman at
the well does not understand so He directs her to call her husband. More symbolism here; for the number of husbands she had repre-
sent the number of gods her people served until this encounter with Jesus. In offering her the living water, Jesus is becoming her
seventh Spouse, the perfect biblical number (remembering that this marriage is symbolic of God’s covenant with His people). She
asks Him if He is the Messiah. The Samaritan concept of Messiah was a more spiritual one than the Jewish concept of a conquering
hero. The Samaritan Messiah was one who would reveal God’s secrets to them. This is exactly what Jesus was doing in revealing
all the woman’s secrets to her. The woman learns about true worship of God; to worship the Father in Spirit and Truth, i.e. to wor-
ship the Father in Jesus (the Truth) and through the Holy Spirit (the Spirit). Filled with His grace, the font of living water welling up
inside of her, the woman, who once avoided the people out of shame, now fearlessly goes back to her people to sow the seed of the
harvest of the Samaritan people’s faith. In sharing her discovery, she helps to bring them to salvation. They then encounter Jesus
themselves and come to a more profound faith based on their own experience of Him, not just
her testimony. The people who had searched for love in many gods, now found true love and
peace in the one true God. This is a reminder to us, while on our Lenten journey, to try to
eliminate the false gods of our life to find true love and true peace in the one true God.
Invitado a una Alianza con Dios El Evangelio de este domingo es la bella histor ia del en-
cuentro de Jesús con la mujer Samaritana, la mujer en el pozo. En el Antiguo Testamento las
historias de los “pozos” mostraban el punto en el que uno conocía a su conyugue (por ejemplo:
Isaac, Moisés, Rut). San Juan usa el cuento del pozo para resaltar la relación de la alianza de
Dios, es decir matrimonio, con el pueblo Samaritano (pagano). Como los Israelitas, la relación alianza-matrimonio con Dios es espi-
ritual o mística. El uso del título “mujer Samaritana”, en vez del nombre de la persona, indica el papel simbólico que ella representa.
Para permanecer escondida debido a su reputación, va al pozo en el tiempo más caluroso del día, mediodía, para poder evitar a otras
personas. En Su conversación con ella, Jesús extiende una dignidad y respeto a la mujer más grande de lo que ella se daba a sí mis-
ma. Él le ofrece agua viva, la clase que da fuerza espiritual y sustancia. La mujer en el pozo no comprende, así que Él la dirige a
hablarle con su esposo. Más simbolismo aquí; ya que el número de esposos representa el número de dioses que su gente servía antes
del encuentro con Jesús. Al ofrecerle el agua viva, Jesús se está convirtiendo en su séptimo esposo, el número bíblico perfecto
(recordando que este matrimonio es simbólico de la alianza de Dios con su pueblo). Ella le pregunta a Él si es el Mesías. El concep-
to Samaritano del Mesías era más espiritual que el concepto Judío de un héroe conquistador. El Mesías Samaritano era uno que les
revelaría los secretos de Dios. Esto es exactamente lo que Jesús hacía al revelarle todos sus secretos a la mujer. La mujer aprende
sobre la real adoración a Dios; el adorar al Padre en Espíritu y Verdad, es decir, el adorar al Padre en Jesús (la Verdad) y por medio
del Espíritu Santo (el Espíritu). Lleno de Su gracia, la fuente de agua viva que brotaba en ella, la mujer, que evitaba a la gente en
vergüenza, ahora sin miedo regresa a su pueblo para plantar la semilla de la cosecha de la fe del pueblo Samaritano. En el compartir
su descubrimiento, ella ayuda a traerles la salvación. Entonces encuentran a Jesús ellos mismos y llegan a una fe más profunda basa-
da en su propia experiencia de Él, no sólo en su testimonio. El pueblo que había buscado amor en muchos dioses, ahora encontraba
el amor verdadero y la paz en un Dios verdadero. Esto es un recordatorio para nosotros, que en nuestra jornada Cuaresmal, intente-
mos eliminar los dioses falsos de nuestra vida para encontrar amor verdadero y paz verdadera en un sólo Dios verdadero.
Coronavirus Measures. Due to the r ecent outbr eak of Cor onavir us, Bishop Jaime Soto has postponed “all non-
essential large indoor gatherings” throughout the month of March. Any Diocesan conferences have been postponed.
Bishop Soto has also directed to cancel all communal Lenten Penance Services during the month of March therefore,
the Communal Penance Service scheduled at our Parish on Tuesday March 31, 2020 has been canceled. Fr. Santiago
will schedule confessions prior to Holy Week and will be taking appointments for confessions. Under the directive of
Bishop Soto, the following additional measures will also be put into place:
Any Parish assemblies that gather in our Parish: Stations of the Cross, CFF classes, Social Club, Bible Study, La-
dies Group, and Bereavement Ministry will be suspended thr ough the month of Mar ch.
Holy water will be removed from the small fonts in the vestibule.
Bishop Soto has also issued a decree dispensing those 60 years of age and older and those with chronic medical issues
from the obligation of Sunday Mass. This will remain active until further notice.
