MARCH 14, 2021 ♦ 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him” -John 3: 14-15
PAGE 2 MARCH 14, 2021 ♦ 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT Dear Faith Family of Our Lady of Grace, Praised Jesus Christ…now and forever! Paul, in our second reading from Ephesians, is aware of our reluctance to entrust ourselves to God’s love. That is why he seems com- pelled to reiterate: “I repeat, it is owing to God’s favor that salva on is yours through faith. This is not your own doing. It is God’s gi . Neither is it a reward for anything you have accomplished.” (Eph 2:8-9) “Oh, if it could only be our accomplishment,” we might say in high and happy mes. We would love to point to our successes, our virtues and improvements, our earnestness in trying so hard, or our ardent confessions. But it is not our own doing, this salva on. It is not a result of our effort. On the other hand, in our mes of failure or discouragement we may lament, “Alas, we have accomplished nothing.” If only we could have made ourselves more worthy, if only we had tried harder, if only we had succeeded in our task of self-perfec on. Again, we sadly miss the point, we stumble about in the dark, bere of the hope that we had in our projects, stripped of plans that might have saved us, purged of the pretense that we had no need of redemp on. We are unaware that, when we acknowledge the fu lity of our efforts, we are at the moment of conversion. It’s this point when we receive our very own invita on to abandon ourselves to Divine grace. True, we can resist the hope, we can hate the light, we can fear the exposure to love and to the truth on which it rests. And our re- sistance can come between us and the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ and we can refuse to accept the grace that is always there. As men and women of faith, our major labor and effort, is not to achieve our salva on, it is to entrust ourselves to it. “God is rich in mercy; it’s because of His great love for us that we have life in Christ when we were dead in sin, by this favor you were saved.” In a moment of grace for the Church last weekend we were privileged to witness the pastoral visit of the Holy Father to Iraq. Pope Francis told the people of Iraq he was going to their country as a “peniten al pilgrim,” asking God’s forgiveness for years of war, per- secu on, and destruc on, and as a “pilgrim of peace,” hoping to remind people that they are all brothers and sisters no ma er their ethnic or religious iden ty. “I will finally be among you,” he said in a video message, released by the Va can on March 4th, the day before the trip was to begin. “I come as a pilgrim, as a peniten al pilgrim to implore forgiveness and reconcilia on from the Lord a er years of war and terrorism, to ask God for consola on for hearts and healing for wounds,” the pope said. “And I come among you as a pilgrim of peace, to re- peat: ‘You are all brothers and sisters.'” His pilgrimage was aimed to strengthen a sense of fraternity among the people who call God under a common name. Speaking di- rectly to the na on’s dwindling Chris an popula on, which has suffered discrimina on and persecu on over the past two decades, Pope Francis praised them for bearing “witness to faith in Jesus in the midst of the most difficult trials.” He called on all to move for- ward in the plan for peace, respect for religious diversity, and the care of the human person. Pope Francis contrasted the threatened destruc on with the hope that came from the people turning to God. “Let us be infected by this hope, which encourages us to re- build and begin again,” the pope said. “And in these hard mes of pandemic, let us help each other to strengthen fraternity, to build together a future of peace — together, brothers and sisters of every religious tradi on.” Have a great week!
