The Adult Choir Returns!
After months and months, the Adult Choir will begin rehearsing and preparing the music for
our services starting this month. If you are interested in being a part of the choir, we need
your voice—especially during the pandemic! We rehearse once a week (virtually or virtually
and in-person) and we will be using a hybrid rehearsal model designed with the guidelines
the Anglican Association of Musicians (AAM), American Guild of Organists (AGO),
National Association for Teachers of Singing (NATS), and other professional organizations
who have spent all summer researching and communicating these measures to its members
and affiliated organizations.
Youth Choir Registration Opens!
The Youth Choir will be meeting for in-person rehearsals starting at a new time! On
Thursday, September 17, the first youth choir rehearsal will take place in Mahon Hall from
4:00 – 5:30 pm. The Youth Choir is open to anyone who has started 3rd grade this fall up
through high school.

prerequisite to participate in this program; an ability to match pitch, follow directions, and a
willingness to work together in a team setting are desired attributes of a successful candidate.
Choristers will learn everything they’ll need to know to succeed in this program!
WOMEN’S MINISTRY
The Women's Group had a wonderful evening on September 2, both in-person and on
Zoom, so we decided to make the most of opportunities to meet outdoors while the weather
is still nice enough. Please join us on Wednesday, September 16 however you are most
comfortable -- in-person on the church lawn at 6:00 pm or virtually by Zoom at 7:30 pm.
On the church lawn, we will measure and mark spots to set up chairs six feet apart. Bring
your own snack and/or beverage, and plan to wear your mask until you are seated. Please
bring a folding chair if you have one or let us know if you need one. RSVP not required, but
it will help us set up outdoors if you do know you are coming. In case of rain, we will all
join the Zoom meeting at 7:30 pm.

Annual Mum Sale at St. Mark's - Saturday, September 19
Mums are $10 each and all proceeds will be donated to
local non-profit organizations: the Glen Ellyn Walk-In
Ministry and the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry's building
fund.
There will NO volunteers to assist people or to accept
payment due to COVID. Instead we will rely on the
honor system and there will be signs directing everyone
to put their payment (cash or check) in the church’s
main office door mailbox. This year there is also a PayPal option so buyers can use their
phones to make a purchase.
These mums have always been big and beautiful! Mums will be on the church’s front lawn
until they’re gone. Come out and get a few starting Saturday, September 19! For more

26Altar Flowers Are Needed: With Fr. George back from sabbatical and Sunday
services coming from his home, flowers are again being used
to beautify the altar. If you wish to donate flowers in
celebration of an event or in memoriam, the cost is now $15
since smaller arrangements are used. If you would like to
contribute flowers to a Sunday service, just send a check
made out to St. Mark’s Church with “altar flowers” written
in the memo and email Dellana Mote at
frontdesk@stmarksglenellyn.org with your information.

St. Mark’s Book Group will meet on Sunday, September 27 at 3:00 pm to discuss
Melanie Benjamin’s “Mistress of the Ritz,” a novel based on the true story of
an American woman who secretly worked for the French Resistance while
playing hostess to the invading Germans at the Hotel Ritz in Paris. On
October 25 we will be discussing “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents”
by Isabel Wilkerson. We will hold the November/December discussion of
“The Library Book” by Susan Orlean on December 6. If you are interested

YOUTH MINISTRY
Sunday School for Youth in Grades 6-12 at 9:30 am
It's that time of year again! Sunday, September 13 is Kick-Off
Sunday and marks the beginning of Sunday School. Every
month we will email families the material to be covered on
Sunday and post it on our website. We hope you can review the
material and questions as a family or with friends and discuss it
throughout the week. Our mission is to make scripture relevant
to what youth experience in today’s world, providing a safe
space for youth to grow their faith by welcoming questions and
inviting dialogue.
Youth Group
Fellowship provides time for middle schoolers and high schoolers to learn about themselves
and God – and have fun while doing it! This year, we will meet regularly online and in person,
continuing in that fellowship.
28Middle School marks the beginning of preparation for confirmation, a reaffirming of the
Baptismal Covenant, those promises made for us at Baptism. The Baptismal Covenant is a
question-and-answer version of the Apostle’s Creed, a statement of faith, and how we are
called to live out that faith. Confirmation takes place at the end of 8th grade when those
youth who choose to be confirmed renew their baptismal vows during a service which
includes a laying on of hands by the Bishop. We ask each incoming 6th grader to commit to
a role in worship, serving as an usher, acolyte, reader, and/or instrumentalist. We hope that
serving in these roles will help youth realize their importance as part of St. Mark’s.
High School is a time to learn how to take responsibility for those baptismal promises
made at confirmation. These are important years when St. Mark’s hopes to engage, instruct,
and involve high schoolers and provide the foundation necessary to grow into mature
Christian adulthood. Our high schoolers take on leadership roles in worship and other St.
Mark’s events, participate in community outreach programs, attend mission trips (ASP and
Mexico) and retreats, help mentor their younger peers, and more!

Confirmation at St. Mark’s 2020-2021
All 8th Graders are welcome! During this transitional period in kids' lives, confirmation
allows us to center ourselves in faith and discover together what that means. What is the
meaning of confirmation and a statement of faith? Well, we dive deeper into the following
topics to help us figure that out: Episcopal Tradition, Sacraments, The Book of Common
Prayer, the Episcopal Liturgy, Vocation, Scripture, Spiritual Practices, Prayer, and more!
Over the course of a year, our confirmation class will meet regularly in large and small
groups and work with their adult mentors to join in that discovery. This is a safe space for
discussion, questions, and yes, some fun, games, and laughter.
