THE CHILD IS SO IMPORTANT Mark portrays Jesus as a strange and mysterious Messiah. The life of Jesus doesn’t follow the path expected for a leader: he comes from a modest, unpretentious background; he presents himself without rank or title; he has no wealth or backing; he makes no effort to command everybody’s allegiance by means of some great sign. All of these are already disconcerting enough, but all limits are exceeded in today’s reading when he announces a most terrifying end to his life is on the way. He is going to allow himself to be arrested, insulted, and crucified like a common criminal. The apostles just don’t get it: their minds are elsewhere, wondering which of them will have the highest place in heaven. It’s easy to laugh at them, but the laugh is on us. Called to follow Jesus, we often worry about tiny advantages and securities as if Christ never existed. Jesus appeals to the disciples’ ambition: “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Jesus often appeals to our own self-interest level of thinking in order to inspire us with the ambition of imitating him, who came “not to be served, but to serve”. Just as he did the disciples, Jesus challenges us to adopt a reversal of commonly accepted values. Mark illustrates Jesus’ inversion of commonly-held values in the sayings about the child. Children in Jesus’ time were not as highly valued as they are in contemporary society: they had a very lowly status, if any at all. Jesus presents the child as an example of what the disciples are to strive to become: they are to be at- tentive even to the least esteemed in the eyes of society ---- the children. In serving the children, they will be serving Jesus, and through him, the Father. When Fr. Carlos takes a little baby who has just been baptized from its mother’s arms and carries it through the community, he is repeating something that Jesus did. This is not just a demonstration of friendliness: it is a sign of the Kingdom and an indication of the values of Jesus. By this gesture Jesus expressed some- thing new. In the world of his day, only grown-ups deserved respect: Jesus gives it to the child. What does the child have that merits this? Surely it must be that the child is full of life and joy, of love and confi- dence. Unless we become as little children, Jesus says, we cannot enter into God’s Kingdom. Today a wave of refugee children sweeps across our border. Who will welcome them? Who will hold them up as a sign of God’s love for all children --- even the little child within our own heart? “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me receives not me but the One who sent me.” RETIRO DE EMAÚS PARA HOMBRES "¿Te sientes solo?
