Holy Week Today Jesus enters Jerusalem to the waving of palm and olive branches and to the shouts of “Hosanna.” He is hailed as the Son of David, a messianic appellation, and the King of Israel. But how quickly turns the tide! In a few days He will be denounced as a blasphemer, ridiculed as insane, and convicted for the crime of insurrection. Our Palm Sunday liturgy demonstrates and commemorates this stark contrast. At the begin- ning of the Mass we sing with the children of Jerusalem, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” By the time of the Gospel, we read the Passion, the account of our Lord’s suffering at the hands of evil and ignorant men. From glory to ignominy in such a short time. It is the same with our own lives here on earth. One minute you’re riding high. The next minute you’re biting the dust. Glory to ignominy. Earthly life is, as the Salve Regina reminds us, a vale of tears. Happiness is not permanent and suffering is inevitable. Our lives run in the same cycle as our Savior’s. Yet, we can be thankful for that. The ups and downs of our lives give us a share in the life of the God-Man. But there’s still one more part to the cycle. As all cycles go, they come full circle. Our Lord passes from the glory of His entrance into Jerusalem to the intense suffering of His passion and death. But on the octave day of Palm Sunday, we come full circle to Easter Sunday. The glory of the Resurrection! And, that glory is permanent. Jesus rises from the dead, spends forty more days on earth revealing His Resurrection to His disci- ples, and ascends to the everlasting joy in heaven. Never again will He suffer the abuse of the Pas- sion. That is our hope as well. As Catholics we believe with St. Paul that if we die with Christ we will also rise with Christ. Dying with Christ means entering into His suffering by accepting our own sufferings with His courageous resignation. Dying with Christ means offering our sufferings for the conversion of sin- ners, for the holy souls in purgatory, in reparation for our own sins, for the salvation of souls, indeed for any holy intention. Dying with Christ means living in the hope that suffering is relatively short and the life of heaven is everlasting. Holy Week is our opportunity, and privilege, to walk the journey of death and resurrection with Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior of mankind. The liturgies of Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday are our unique, annual opportunity to relive, here and now, what the Church calls the Paschal Mystery: the cycle of glory and suffering that is part of every human life which carries with it the promise of the Resurrection and the everlasting joy of heaven. I encourage you to come to St. Odilo Church and celebrate the great liturgies of Holy Week. Come and receive the blessings and graces of suffering, dying and rising with Jesus. Come and comfort our Savior so cruelly treated. Come and celebrate with Him the new and everlasting life of salvation. Come and pray. The schedule of the special liturgies and sacramental confessions for Holy Week is included in today’s bulletin. Be sure to take one home and paste it to your refrigerator. Come and pray with the Church. Wishing you a blessed and grace-filled Holy Week, Fr. Bart
