Congratulations, you are on your way! The first day of Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is here, and it is an exciting day for both you and your child. The
VPK skill-related activities included in this calendar can help to encourage your child to take an active interest in learning and will help you guide your

School readiness is more than counting 1,2,3, singing your ABCs, or identifying colors and shapes. Children who are ready for kindergarten demonstrate
independence, are social and relate well to others their age as well as familiar adults, and can communicate with purpose and understanding. They are
engaged and show the development for a love of learning. It is important to understand that no two children are the same. All children develop these

Showing up on time every day is important to
your child’s success and learning from preschool
forward. Missing 10 percent of preschool (one or
two days every few weeks) can make it harder for
your child to develop early reading skills and be
prepared for kindergarten and first grade. The
routines your child develops in preschool will
continue throughout school. You can make the
most of preschool by encouraging your child to
attend every day! Your enthusiasm is a BIG boost
to your child’s success! Talk about it, read about

Children are naturally curious about numbers,
counting and mathematical concepts. Their
understanding of numbers, operations, and
patterns grow tremendously throughout
the prekindergarten year as they engage
in hands-on number recognition, counting,
measurement, and comparison activities.
Practicing these skills develops their ability
to assign words to numbers and sets (a child
writes the word “six” and draws a picture
of six fish.)
