Turístico México 2018 llevado a cabo en la ciudad de Mazatlán, Sinaloa; María
Elena nos otorga una entrevista que nos permite aprender un poco más acerca
de quién es, su labor como guía de turistas y lo que ha logrado a lo largo de
sus 35 años de trayectoria.
Originaria de Mazatlán, llega a Los Cabos en 1992 cuando la industria de
cruceros buscaba los puertos más adecuados para sus rutas. El destino la reta
a desarrollar actividades para el turismo náutico, elabora diversos recorridos,
muchos de los cuáles siguen vigentes a través de varias empresas de servicios
turísticos.
Lo primero que queremos conocer de ella es por qué escoge ser guía de
turistas. María Elena recuerda ese momento crucial en su vida, la elección de
una profesión, lo que único que tiene claro es optar por una carrera técnica,
y se inscribe en la Escuela Nacional para guía de turistas. Desde el primer año
se enamora del plan de estudios, cada materia le confirma que es la profesión
adecuada para ella.

After being recognized for excellence in tourism at the Mexico tourism fair in
Mazatlan, Maria Elena allowed us to learn a little more about who she is, her
work as a tour guide and what she has accomplished over her 35-year career.

Originally from Mazatlán, Maria arrived in Los Cabos in 1992 when the cruise

Cada día se encuentra una nueva especie, otras se extinguen, la
densidad de la población aumenta, disminuye, es multicultural y
nuestra misión es asimilar estos sucesos para educar a los turistas
sobre el lugar que visitan”.
El guía de turistas está en contacto con las experiencias y emociones del
visitante, es educador en ambientes no formales. María Elena busca expandir
esta visión y alentar a más personas a hacer del turismo una profesión, que se
dignifique esta loable actividad. Como parte de su esfuerzo, imparte conferencias
al personal de compañías privadas y hoteles, alentándolos a convertirse en
expertos sobre nuestro país y compartir la cultura de México con los visitantes.

“At first, I wanted to be an archaeologist or anthropologist, a career
related to history. However, I decided to do something faster and I
realized that this is a lifetime career! Tourism requires constant
learning because the guide is an ambassador in each destination and
interprets all the sciences, geography, history, astronomy and nature,
and translates them into understandable terms for visitors.
Every day a new species is found, and one is extinguished, the density
of the population increases, decreases and changes and it is the guide's
job to interpret all these events to educate tourists about the place
they are visiting.”
Tour guides are in charge of the visitor's experiences and requirements, the
tour-guide’s job is to be an educator in non-formal settings. Maria Elena seeks to
expand this vision and encourage more people to make tourism a career choice.
Doing so is a very praiseworthy task. As part of her effort, she provides lectures
to staff, private companies and hotels encouraging them to become experts on
Mexico and to share the culture with visitors.

Rhincodon typus commonly known as the “Whale Shark” is the world’s
largest shark and fish. Adult measures up to 41.5 ft long and a weight

spotted animals, scientist estimate that they live to around 70 years old
and reach adult sexual maturity at around 30 years. It is believed that
they give birth to live young, but no one has ever witnessed a birth of a
