Honraremos el Mes de la Historia Negra en James John el jueves 20 de febrero de 5: 15-7: 30pm. El
evento contará con artistas y adultos, exhibiciones educativas y actividades, y se servirá la cena. Este
evento se está planeando en una colaboración entre el personal de James John, los padres y los miembros

Recordatorio: encuesta de escuelas exitosas de PPS: comentarios de la familia
¡Da forma al futuro de la educación de tus alumnos!
¿Qué es lo primero que se te ocurre cuando escuchas la frase "escuelas exitosas"? Creemos que las
escuelas exitosas son espacios de aprendizaje seguros, saludables y acogedores que son inclusivos para
todos los estudiantes. Pero queremos escuchar tus pensamientos.
En 2019-20, las Escuelas Públicas de Portland nuevamente se asociarán con Panorama Education para
recopilar información de estudiantes y familias que nos ayudará a mejorar las experiencias de los
estudiantes en todo el distrito. Encuestaremos a los estudiantes en los grados 4, 5, 7-10 sobre sus
experiencias en sus aulas y escuelas, y las familias sobre su percepción de la escuela a la que asiste su hijo.
La encuesta cubrirá temas sobre el sentido de pertenencia, la seguridad escolar, el clima escolar, las
barreras para la participación familiar, así como, cómo los estudiantes piensan y sienten sobre la
diversidad, la equidad y la inclusión en la escuela.

NADIE COME SOLO DÍA - 14 DE FEBRERO

Beyond Differences, una Organización sin fines de lucro, creó No One Eats Alone Day para
prevenir el bullying y combatir los sentimientos de soledad que los niños pueden sentir cada día

Esperamos que haya podido asistir a nuestra reunión general del 21 de enero y escuchar a Alonzo
Chadwick, el gerente de padres de Self Enhancement, Inc (SEI), comenzar nuestra conversación

Nos complace anunciar que Chris McMurry ha sido elegido como copresidente de la PTA; puedes

en segundo grado. Derreishia Boyd también se ha unido a nuestro equipo y está asumiendo el papel de

Tendremos nuestra primera fiesta de limpieza de terrenos del Equipo Verde del año el sábado 29 de
febrero, de 9:00 a 11:00; Se proporcionará café y bocadillos. Traiga guantes y cualquier herramienta, con
sus iniciales, que prefiera usar. Tenemos algunos guantes y herramientas disponibles. Estaremos

Sessions/Tours- Friday, Feb 14th and Friday, Feb 21st @ 9am
Thank you to those parents who attended our 2020-21 Kinder Parent Orientation on Thursday,
February 6. Our next information sessions will be on Friday, February 14th & Friday, February
21st at 9am. At these sessions, we will share information about the enrollment process,
information about both the English and Spanish/English Dual Language Immersion Programs
and general information about Kindergarten at James John. Please share this information with
any families who will have children entering Kindergarten in the 2020-2021 school year. For

Reminder Upcoming Event- Black History Month Celebration- Thursday,
February 20
We will be honoring Black History Month at James John on Thursday, February 20th from 5:15-
7:30pm. The event will feature student and adult performers, educational displays and
activities and dinner will be served. This event is being planned in a collaboration between
James John staff, parents and community members. Please plan to join us on February 20!

Reminder - PPS Successful Schools Survey: Family Feedback
Shape the future of your student's education!
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the phrase “successful schools?”
We believe that successful schools are safe, healthy and welcoming learning spaces that are
inclusive for all students. But we want to hear your thoughts.
In 2019-20, Portland Public Schools is again partnering with Panorama Education to gather
information from students and families that will help us improve student experiences across
the district. We will survey students in grades 4, 5, 7-10 on their experiences in their classrooms
and schools, and families about their perception of the school their child attends.
The survey will cover topics on sense of belonging, school safety, school climate, barriers to
family engagement, as well as how students are thinking and feeling about diversity, equity,
and inclusion in school.
The window for the family survey will stay open until February 28th.! Please be honest and
thoughtful, we value your feedback!

NO ONE EATS ALONE DAY – FEBRUARY 14
Being left out or feeling lonely or invisible are symptoms of social isolation, which is why
Beyond Differences, a non-profit organization, created No One Eats Alone Day to
prevent bullying and combat feelings of loneliness that can be felt by children each day
at school lunch.
National No One Eats Alone Day is February 14, to enable students to make an impact
on those in their own communities, create active inclusivity, which will, in turn, create
changes that stick. A teen-led, grassroots program, Beyond Differences promotes this
student-led lunchtime event to encourage students (their peers) to engage in simple
acts of kindness at lunch, working to prevent bullying before it starts and empowering
teens to lead the movement to change the culture of the school lunchroom. And not just
on one particular day, but every day in the cafeteria.
FEBRUARY HARVEST OF THE MONTH – PEARS!
Every Thursday in February, all PPS kitchens will be featuring our Harvest of the Month
- Pears. We will have a variety of recipes show-casing our Oregon state fruit. Fun facts
about pears:

February 7th, 2020
We hope that you were able to attend our January 21st general meeting and hear Alonzo Chadwick, the
parent manager from Self Enhancement, Inc (SEI), begin our facilitated conversation about talking with
your kids about race. Please join us for our Tuesday February 18th general meeting, from 6:00 - 7:30 in
the school auditorium, where Alonzo will be continuing the conversation with us! Dinner and childcare will
be provided.
We are pleased to announce that Chris McMurry has been elected as the PTA co-president; you can
reach Chris at president@jamesjohnpta.org. Chris has lived in Portland all of his life and his daughter is
in second grade. Derreishia Boyd has also joined our team and is taking over the communications
role. Derreishia has three boys; one is a graduate of James John and is now at George middle school
and two are at James John, one in third grade and one in fourth grade.
Join us as we recognize, celebrate, and honor the rich and diverse history and important contributions
and achievements of African Americans, through learning and exploration. Families and community
members are invited to the Black History celebration, which will take place from 5:30 – 7:30 on Thursday,
February 20 . The celebration will include food and an exhibit of African American pioneers in the fields

of science, arts, inventions & culture. The program will also feature student led performances and special
guest, Alex Addy, who is a nationally renowned West African drummer. In our effort to honor African-
American history, life, and culture, we encourage your presence and participation. None of the vital work
we do here at James John would be possible without the significant support of our staff and community. If

Our next Green Team meeting is Thursday February 13 at Stormbreaker at 6:00 if you’d like to be a part

of this “ground breaking” event, please join us! To learn more about Grow: www.growportland.org.
We will have our first Green Team grounds clean-up party of the year on Saturday February 29th, 9:00 -
11:00; coffee and snacks will be provided. Please bring gloves and any tools, with your initials on them,
that you prefer to use. We do have some gloves and tools available. We will be sweeping wood chips,
spreading mulch, picking up trash, and weeding. Thanks for showing your Lion’s Pride!
We are working with the school on placing two industrial trash cans in the main playground. As we work
through this process, thank you to everyone who diligently puts their trash in the city trash cans and helps
pick-up trash when they see it on the grounds!
Please join us for our next movie night on Friday February 28th showing Princess and the Frog. Doors
open at 6:00 and the movie begins at 6:30; pizza and snacks will be for sale.
Our big Spring fundraiser this year is a Lucky Lion night of Bingo! Held at the Red Sea Church on Friday,
March 13th, come join the community with a common goal - raising money for our kiddos! Entrance is free
for this 21 and over event. Keep an eye for backpack flyers, news on Facebook, and posters up around
school. We would love to see you there!

the responsibilities of this role.
