¿No estás bajo mi sombra? The Guadalupana Story On Saturday December 9, 1531, when Juan Diego passed by Tepeyac Hill in order to go to Tlatelolco, he heard many birds singing and a voice which said, “Juanito, the least of my children, where are you going?” Upon turning around, Juan Diego saw a very beautiful lady. The lady said: “I am the Virgin, Saint Mary. I have come here to tell you that I want a chapel built here to show and give my love and help to all of you. The lady told Juan Diego he should go see the Bishop and tell him what she had said. Juan Diego left the Bishop’s house very sad because the Bishop didn’t believe him. Then he went to Tepeyac Hill to tell the lady it would be better if she sent a more important man because no one would believe Juan Diego. The woman told Juan Diego to go back to the Bishop’s house on Sunday. This time the Bishop told Juan Diego to bring a sign back, that is, proof that the woman was really the Virgin. Juan Diego couldn’t go to Tepeyac the next day. His uncle had gotten very sick and he went to get the doctor. It wasn’t until Tuesday when he passed by the hill to go for a priest to hear his uncle’s confession that the Virgin appeared and said, “Juanito, Juan Dieguito; Aren’t I here as your mother? Aren’t you under my shadow? Why are you worried? After this, she let him know that his uncle was cured and asked him to climb to the top of the hill, cut some roses and keep them under his cape. Juan Diego was surprised at that order, because it was winter and it wasn’t the season for roses. Nevertheless, he obeyed and found roses just like the Virgin had told him. He took the roses to her and she said: “My son, my littlest son, these roses are the sign you will take to the Bishop.” Once again Juan Diego went to see the Bishop and told him that the Virgin had sent proof that she really was the Virgin. Upon taking off his cape, the roses fell to the floor and there appeared on the fabric of his cape the precious image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

20 Language In Worship: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, All Saints Church makes every effort to bring the language of worship into conformity with the principles of biblical theology that affirm that the personhood of God embraces all expressions of gender lovingly and equally. Therefore, in our worship, we take our Bible readings from an inclusive language lectionary, which is often truer to original sources in references to people, and expands our concept of God beyond exclusively masculine terms. In Prayer Book liturgies we make minimal but symbolically important changes which denote our commitment to inclusive expression. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are left unaltered. The words of the liturgy are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer and Enfleshed. The biblical readings are from the new The Women’s Lectionary year W, created by Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney. © Wil Gafney and Church Publishing, no further distribution. ********** DIRECTOR DE MÚSICA Dan Cole SOLISTAS Y MÚSICOS Jessica Fichot Brandon Turner PREDICADOR Alfredo Feregrino Para preguntas o peticiones de Cuidado Pastoral, favor de comunicarse con la oficina de la Rvda. A LL S AINTS C HURCH IT IS TIME TO NOMINATE NEW MEMBERS TO THE VESTRY! What is the Vestry? The Vestry is the legal governing and decision-making body of All Saints Church, contains representatives elected from the congregation of All Saints Church, and meets virtually on a designated Tuesday each month at 6:00p.m. All Vestry meetings are open meetings. The presiding officer of the Vestry is the rector and there are two wardens, a senior warden and a junior warden. Vestry candidates are elected to one four-year term and must be off the Vestry for at least one year before being eligible for election to another four-year term. Youth candidates are elected to a shorter term determined by their school grade level. What does Vestry do? The Vestry sets the vision for All Saints Church. It also serves as the policy-making body for the church, as well as sharing in the spiritual leadership of the church. Last but not least, the Vestry has fiduciary responsibility for the church’s finances. Additionally, every Vestry member serves on at least one Vestry Standing Committee or Vestry Ad Hoc Committee/Task Force. The Vestry Standing Committees are: Buildings & Grounds; Children, Youth, & Families; Congregational Development; Finance; Pastoral Care/Health & Healing; Peace & Justice/Office for Creative Connections; and Personnel. What qualities should a Vestry member have? Church canons and All Saints’ policy require Vestry members to be pledging (committing to an annual financial gift) communicants of All Saints Church. We seek people who are committed to and live out the Core Values of All Saints Church: Radical Inclusion ▪ Courageous Justice ▪ Joyful Spirituality ▪ Ethical Stewardship Additionally, we seek people who are: Prayerful and committed to ongoing deepening of their spiritual journey ▪ Team players ▪ Active members of the Parish ▪ Articulate ▪ Strategic thinkers who also can roll-up their sleeves and get to work ▪ Willing to encourage others to participate in stewardship activities ▪ Socially aware ▪ Independent thinkers ▪ Someone with time to give to the Vestry as it is crucial to attend the Vestry and committee meetings. A good vestry needs introverts and extraverts, faithful people from across spectra of race, economic class and generation, and people who think and approach leadership and the life of the church in a range of conventional and nontraditional ways. English fluency is not a requirement (translation services will be provided if needed) What is the process for selecting Vestry members? Here is the process for selecting Vestry members: A Vestry Nominating Committee is formed by the Rector and Wardens and approved by the Vestry. It is made up of a cross-section of Parish members, as well as the retiring members of the Vestry, the Rector, Parish Administrator, and Wardens. A request for nominations goes out to the Parish via the Sunday liturgy, email, the website, and social media. People are encouraged to self-nominate as well as to nominate fellow parishioners they feel would make good Vestry members. Nominations are accepted until 5:00p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2021 Once the Vestry Nominating Committee receives the nominations, they will review all nominations and make recommendations of the slate to be presented to the Vestry for a vote. The members of the slate will then be contacted and asked to serve. Once all have agreed, their photos and bios will appear on the All Saints website and in a parish-wide email so the Parish has the names and information about the nominees before they vote on the slate at the March 14, 2021, Annual Parish Meeting.
