Bienvenidos/as a San Marcos
                        Diócesis Episcopal de Chicago
La Parroquia Episcopal de San Marcos. Aprecia muy sinceramente su visita. Si
busca ser parte de la familia parroquial. Sean bienvenidos.

remembering the light on the darkest night of the year. Come join us in
the St. Mark’s sanctuary on December 21 at 7:00 pm for prayer, music,
and light. Contact the Rev. Jo Ann Lagman at joann@stmarksglenellyn.org for any questions.

The Outreach Committee recently held a meeting to discuss the
remaining 2021 outreach funds. The Outreach Committee had a
remaining balance of $267 to be disbursed by the end of the year.
We voted to send those funds to Immigrant Solidarity DuPage,
whose mission is to educate, organize, and mobilize DuPage County
around the rights and collective struggles of the Latinx community.
Also, the offering collected at the Advent Lessons and Carols service on Sunday, December 12,
was directed to the Outreach Committee. These funds, $222, are being sent to Episcopal Relief
and Development to provide assistance to communities in Kentucky affected by the recent
tornados.
Thank you to everyone for your support!

                                  ST. MARK’S MUSIC MINISTRY

St. Mark's Music Ministry Update

The music ministry at St. Mark's is in a time of important transition. After five years together, St.
Mark's and Daniel Segner parted ways in November. Daniel joined St. Mark's in 2016 as a graduate
of Valparaiso University and having served as Principal Organist for the Chicago Temple. He led
the St. Mark's choir with skill and energy while growing in his expertise as an organist and musician.
Daniel continued the St. Mark's tradition of Lessons and Carols and organized several concerts
including a Choral Masterworks in 2018 and a Hymn Festival in 2019. At the start of the pandemic,
Daniel helped St. Mark's make the transition to online and Zoom worship, with both live and
recorded music, while working with the choir online. As Daniel pursues opportunities to serve
other congregations and organizations with his many talents, I ask you to join me in wishing him
well and to keep him and his wife Rachael in prayer. I also ask your prayers for the St. Mark's choir
as it experiences this time of transition and its varied emotions.

                                                 27
I am grateful to a number of St. Mark's musicians who
have already offered their time and talents to lead music
in our worship services. A special thanks goes to Marsha
Webster who plays both the organ and piano, has
rehearsed the choir, and helped plan music for Sunday
worship. Her help has been invaluable in this time of
transition. On short notice, Grayson and James Van Camp organized our service of Advent
Lessons and Carols which was held last Sunday, December 12. Jeanne Tschampa, a member of
the choir, has led music on the piano at a number of services. Patti King (cello), Morgan Pintarich
(vocal and guitar), Bob Lundin (guitar) and Ryan Valdivia (trumpet) have offered their musical
talents as a gift to our community and its praise to God. In the weeks ahead, these and other
talented musicians who are part of the St. Mark's community will be offering their gifts of music.
If you or someone you know sings or plays an instrument and would like to participate in music
at St. Mark's, please come forward!
In the coming weeks, a committee will be meeting to begin the process of searching for a new
director of music for St. Mark's. This committee includes John Zelman (vestry and choir member),
Miguel Briones (deacon), Tanya and Jerry Carey (cello and flute), Patti King (cello), Morgan
Pintarich (guitar and choir member) and Hal Stratton (vocal and piano). There are plans for a
congregation-wide survey which will provide an opportunity to build our list of musicians and
gather feedback for the search process.
A vision statement for the St. Mark's Music Program was created in 2016 by the search committee
at that time. This statement, presented below, will be a guide to the current search committee:
Music and the arts are means by which St. Mark’s makes known the glory and presence of God, providing avenues
for spiritual development and participation in ministry. Anchored by an experienced adult choir, choirs for young
children, a two-manual J.W. Walker and Sons tracker organ and two grand pianos, the future of our music program
will embrace our multi-cultural and inter-generational membership. We are a congregation that learns, knows how
to sing, and enjoys singing a variety of music that represents our community and curiosity about the world.
Collaborative, nurturing, and all-encompassing describe the foundation for our music program which is committed
to the Baptismal Covenant and grounded in St. Mark’s vision: “Rooted in baptism, growing in faith and branching
out into the world.”
As we work and pray together for the future of the music ministry at St. Mark's, I offer to us a
prayer for musicians and artists found in the Book of Common Prayer (p, 819): “O God, whom
saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with your servants who seek
through art and music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; and grant to them
even now glimpses of our beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for
evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
I welcome your questions and help as we work together for the future of the music ministry of St.
Mark's. George Smith / rector@stmarksglenellyn.org - 630-858-1020, ext 222.

Las Posadas! We gather in the sanctuary for
the first half and then move to Mahon Hall.
What is Las Posadas?
Posada is a Spanish word that has several
meanings including inn, protection, and
welcome.
In Latin American countries, Las Posadas
(plural) have been a custom full of fun and joy
and are a preparation for the Christmas
celebration. Las Posadas begins on December
16 and concludes on the December 24 at the
“Mass of rooster” or midnight mass.
                                                  29
Las Posadas owes its origin possibly to Fray Diego de Soria, a Spanish religious of the Order of
Saint Augustine. This priest introduced a devotion in Mexico in the church of Acolman in 1587.
The goal was to counteract the celebrations of the Aztecs honoring the war god Huitzilopochtli.
These celebrations took place precisely at the time of Christmas, which presented a strong
attraction for Christian converts.

Fray Diego’s Posadas soon extended to other churches in Mexico and neighboring countries and
also became celebrated in homes. In these celebrations, the “pilgrims” went from house to house
headed by the “angel” who led the Virgin Mary riding on a donkey with Joseph at her side. When
the owners of a house opened the door, everyone participated in the hospitality that the owners
offered.

This custom has an important pastoral meaning. When the Savior of the world was to be born,
Joseph and Mary did not find an inn with room for them. Now we know that the Messiah came
to redeem us. By celebrating the date of his coming every year, we open the doors of our hearts
to give him an inn. How do you give Jesus an inn?

THE ST. MARK’S GIVING CAMPAIGN FOR 2022

Now is the time to make your pledge to St. Mark's for 2022! The average pledge from St.
Mark's households for 2021 was $2515. The average pledge for all Episcopal churches in our
diocese is $3,425.

Our theme is: With all your heart: Connecting to hope. Giving
with gratitude. Moving forward with faith.

The Giving Campaign seeks to receive a financial pledge (estimate of
giving) from every St. Mark's household. Pledges may still be made by
returning your pledge envelope to the parish office or placing it in the
                           offertory plate on Sunday.

An update on the St. Mark's Giving Campaign for 2022:

Numbers and percentages! - 178, 20, 84% and 67%

Let's do the math! As of December 13…
- 178 pledges have been submitted totaling $502,521
- 20 out of the 178 are new to St. Mark's!

By comparison, for 2021, a total of 238 households made pledges totaling $601,000.

                                               30
We are 75% toward reaching last year's number of pledges and 84% toward matching last year's
pledge dollar amount.

To accomplish the vestry goals for 2022, our pledge dollars need to be $721,000. We are 70% of
the way toward this goal.

More numbers:

To reach our dollar goal, we need an additional $218,479.

Every pledge helps us reach our goal! If you haven't done so, please make your pledge for 2022
today!

Thank you for your generosity which is a faithful investment in your church and its future!
