Bienvenidos/as a San Marcos
                        Diócesis Episcopal de Chicago
La Parroquia Episcopal de San Marcos. Aprecia muy sinceramente su visita. Si
busca ser parte de la familia parroquial. Sean bienvenidos.

     que juró a nuestro padre Abrahán;

                          ADVENT RETREAT AND PRAYER SESSIONS

WHILE WAITING: An Advent Bread Baking Retreat Day
                    Saturday, December 11, 2021, 10:00 am to 2:30 pm
On site and on Zoom at Meeting ID 483-170-780.
All faith traditions and spiritual paths are welcome.

The simple task of bread baking replaces pre-holiday busyness and claims Christmas giving as
something that comes from our hands and heart. Whole wheat flour, water, yeast, salt, honey, oil
— simple ingredients are combined and kneaded into a loaf to be baked and served as an
expression of love for those we care about. Patient waiting for the dough to rise calls to mind all
that we wait for in our lives, claiming it as sacred time to reflect and to pray.

This retreat experience will take place both on Zoom and on site at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church
in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where vaccination and masks are required and appropriate distancing will
be observed. All are asked to be present for the entire four and a half hour retreat.

The presenter is Bro. Joseph Kilikevice, OP, a friar of the Dominican Order, the founding director
of the Shem Center for Interfaith Spirituality, Oak Park, Illinois, and a director of interfaith
retreats. He seeks to bring peace into the world through interreligious understanding and respect.

Registration is required. Please go to https://bit.ly/30s3WCz to register. Then go to the
church's website to make a donation at https://bit.ly/3CmvS88. Then choose Advent Retreat as
your option. You will receive a copy of the bread recipe before the date in order for you to have
the ingredients on hand.

For more information, contact George Smith at rector@stmarksglenellyn.org.

be a lonely time, a joyful time, a time of reflection, a time
of stress, a time of great peace, and so much more.
Daughters of the King (DOK) would like to provide a time
and space for brief reflection, some quiet time, and prayer
together in the midst of this season, whatever it looks like for you this year. St. Mark's Daughters
of the King will be leading 30-minute prayer sessions in the chapel at St. Mark's in person on the
dates and times below. All parishioners are invited to join in any of these prayer times with us as
a time of peace, healing, joy, and fellowship with each other and with God as we lift up our hearts
to Him. Please contact Darcie Lambert at darcielambert@gmail.com if you have any questions.

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11

Everyone is invited to a celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe
                                  on Saturday, December 11th!

What is the background for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe?
The year was 1531. Juan Diego, who lived in poverty on the edge
of a city called Tenochtitlan, known today as Mexico City, was on
his way to Mass. Suddenly he saw a woman surrounded by a halo
of light. Songbirds sang as he gazed at her, and she told him that
she was Mary - and that she was there to let the world know that
she was the protector “of all people of every kind,”
acknowledging his poverty and indigenous ancestry. Then she
told him that she wanted a temple built in her honor at that
location, where a temple to the Aztec goddess Tonatzin had once
                                  stood.
Juan Diego went to the Spanish bishop, who dismissed him and
his story. So he went back to find the Virgin to ask her to find a more prominent person to
accomplish her request. But she told him that he was the one. He went back to the bishop who
again refused to listen to him. On his fourth visit, Mary told him to extend his cloak while she
placed hundreds of picked spring roses into it. When Juan Diego went before the bishop, this
enormous pile of roses fell from his cloak onto the bishop's floor, and Mary's likeness appeared

                                                 24
on the cloak, imprinted on the rough fabric. With the bishop believing the miracle, the temple was
built and Juan Diego’s now threadbare smock hangs in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City.
When people say “La Virgen” in Mexico, it is this vision of Mary they mean. You will see figures
of Mary wearing a robe spangled with stars, surrounded by a golden nimbus. She usually has black
ribbons at her wrists, a sign of her pregnancy. Dark-skinned Juan Diego is pictured venerating
Mary at her feet, who is also pictured as dark-skinned. As one of them, she loves the poor and
those who are of no value in the eyes of the world.

“Within our darkest night, you kindle the fire that never
dies away, that never dies away.” - Taizé

longest night. The Holidays are not always the most joyous time
for people, and this is a time to honor that with prayer,
meditation, and with remembering the light on the darkest night of the year. Come join us in the
St. Mark’s chapel on Tuesday, December 21, at 7:00 pm for prayer, music, and light. Contact
the Rev. Jo Ann Lagman at joann@stmarksglenellyn.org for any questions.

link between Advent and Christmas full of hope, light, music, prayers,

THE ST. MARK’S GIVING CAMPAIGN FOR 2022

Now is the time to make your pledge to St. Mark's for 2022! The average pledge from St.
Mark's households for 2021 was $2515. The average pledge for all Episcopal churches in our
diocese is $3,425.

Our theme is: With all your heart: Connecting to hope. Giving
with gratitude. Moving forward with faith.

The Giving Campaign seeks to receive a financial pledge (estimate of
giving) from every St. Mark's household. Pledges may still be made by
returning your pledge envelope to the parish office or placing it in the
                           offertory plate on Sunday.

Thank you for your generosity which is a faithful investment in your church and its future!
