Today the Church celebrates joyfully the solemnity of the Assumption
of our Blessed Mother into heaven. It is fitting that God, who preserved
her from the corruption of original sin at her conception, would now, at

Why the Priest Kisses the Altar
This liturgical custom is one of the oldest, dating back to the 4th century.

it. To some this practice seems rather odd; but kissing holy and sacred objects has

cultures where the kiss was viewed as a sign of respect.
