The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ
"This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many." From today's
Gospel, Mc 14, 12-16. 22-26.

The Old and New Testaments were referred to as the Old and New Covenants in the
Greek language. When it comes to the Bible, covenants are bonds that God creates with
us, His people, throughout salvation history. They are not isolated events but a
narrative, an extensive story. For example, if we think about Noah and God's covenant
at that time where God promised not to flood the earth again to the point of destruction,
or with Abraham where God promises to multiply his descendants like the stars and let's
not forget His promise to David that the Messiah would be one of his descendants. Since
God loves us, He made these covenants with us, and as the history of our salvation
progressed, so did God's promise. His fulfillment of providing our Messiah in Jesus
Christ is what we celebrate in each Eucharist.

In the Old Testament, we read of various sacrifices made to God. Leviticus chapters 1-7
describe the different types of offerings that were made in the Jewish tradition, such as

burnt offerings, grain offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings. Each
type of sacrifice was offered in a specific way and had a unique meaning. These were all
the sacrifices that God "enjoined on Moses at Mount Sinai at the time when he
commanded the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai to bring their offerings to the
LORD." (Lev 7:38). In Jesus' passion, God the Father renewed His promise of salvation
for us. Just as it was prefigured in Genesis 22:8, "God will provide the sheep for the
burnt offering," Jesus was the appropriate victim for the expiation of our sins, worthy
and pure. As St. Paul affirmed in his letter to the Hebrews, "it is impossible for the blood
of bulls and goats to take away sins" (Heb 10:4). Under the New Covenant, "we have
been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" (Heb
10:10), ending the need for any more animal sacrifices.

In Jeremiah, we read how God promised to make a new covenant with His people, by
which Israel would know Him and experience His forgiveness (Jer. 31:31-34 ). You may
be asking yourself, "How do I take part in the new covenant?" We are reminded of the
“how” during and after Mass as we are called to "Love and serve the Lord and each
other." By striving to love God and each other in the best way we can, we bear witness to
God's covenant with us and become living testaments of His love. In this way we take
part in the saving mission of Christ for the world! On this solemnity of the Most Holy
Body and Blood of Christ let us pray in thanksgiving for God’s salvific plan and for His
great love for us.

Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo
"Ésta es mi sangre, sangre de la alianza, que se derrama por todos." Del
Evangelio de hoy, Mc 14, 12-16. 22-26.

El Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento fueron referidos como Antigua y Nueva Alianza en el
idioma griego. Cuando se refiere a la Biblia, una alianza es un lazo que Dios crea con
nosotros, su pueblo, a lo largo de la historia de la salvación. No son hechos aislados, sino
una narrativa, una historia extensa. Por ejemplo, si pensamos en Noé y el pacto de Dios
en ese momento donde Dios prometió no volver a inundar la tierra hasta el punto de la
destrucción, o con Abraham donde Dios promete multiplicar su descendencia como las
estrellas y no olvidemos su promesa a David de que el Mesías sería uno de sus
descendientes. Dado que Dios nos ama, hizo estos pactos con nosotros y a medida que
avanzaba la historia de nuestra salvación, también lo hizo la promesa de Dios. Su
cumplimiento de proveer a nuestro Mesías en Jesucristo es lo que celebramos en cada
Eucaristía.

En el Antiguo Testamento, leemos acerca de varios sacrificios hechos a Dios. Los
capítulos 1 a 7 de Levítico describen los diferentes tipos de ofrendas que se hacían en la
tradición judía, como holocaustos, ofrendas de cereal, ofrendas de paz, ofrendas por el
pecado y ofrendas por la culpa. Cada tipo de sacrificio se ofrecía de una manera
específica y tenía un significado único. Estos fueron todos los sacrificios que Dios
"ordenó a Moisés en el monte Sinaí en el momento en que ordenó a los israelitas en el
desierto de Sinaí que trajeran sus ofrendas al SEÑOR". (Levítico 7:38). En la pasión de
Jesús, Dios Padre renovó su promesa de salvación con nosotros. Tal como fue
prefigurado en Génesis 22: 8, "Dios proveerá la victima para el holocausto", Jesús fue la
víctima apropiada para la expiación de nuestros pecados, digna y pura. Como afirma

San Pablo en su carta a los Hebreos, "es imposible que la sangre de toros y machos
cabríos quite los pecados" (Hb 10, 4). Bajo el Nuevo Pacto, "hemos sido consagrados
mediante la ofrenda del cuerpo de Jesucristo una vez para siempre" (Heb 10:10),
poniendo fin a la necesidad de más sacrificios de animales.

En Jeremías, leemos cómo Dios prometió hacer un nuevo pacto con su pueblo, mediante
el cual Israel lo conocería y experimentaría su perdón (Jer. 31: 31-34). Quizás se
pregunte: "¿Cómo participo en el nuevo pacto?" Se nos recuerda el "cómo" durante y
después de la Misa cuando se nos llama a "Amar y servir al Señor y unos a otros". Al
esforzarnos por amar a Dios y a los demás de la mejor manera posible, damos
testimonio del pacto de Dios con nosotros y nos convertimos en testamentos vivientes
de su amor. ¡De esta manera participamos en la misión salvífica de Cristo para el
mundo! En esta solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo, oremos en acción
de gracias por el plan salvífico de Dios y por su gran amor por nosotros.
