1st & 2nd year Confirmation Preparation
Checklist - Corpus Christi Parish
__ Wed., Sept. 23, 2020 – Kick off Mass, Corpus Christi Church, 6:30 p.m.
__ Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020 – Kick off meeting for all Catholic and public school first and second year
Confirmation preparation, Corpus Christi Church 11:00 am in English and Spanish.
__ Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020 – Confirmation Retreat 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, Corpus Christi Great Hall. Retreat is
required for 1st and 2nd year Confirmation students. Please arrive by 10:00 am for Mass.
__ Parent and 2nd year student will schedule a 15-minute interview with Fr. Tom for a Saturday in the
month of January 2021. This interview is a required step for 2nd year students to determine your readiness
to be confirmed by your efforts to complete all requirements.
__ Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021 – First class of new year, classes begin for all 2nd year Catholic school Confirmation
students and resume for all 2nd year public school Confirmation students.
__ Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021 – Meeting for 2nd year Confirmation students and parents in the Corpus Christi Great
Hall at 11:00 am in English or 1:30 pm in Spanish.
__ Sun., Jan. 31, 2021 – 10:00 am Mass – Corpus Christi Church: Rite of Inscription during the Mass. After
Communion parents and students commit to prayerfully completing the requirements for Confirmation. (see
Commitment Form) Attendance required for all 2nd year Confirmation students. Following Mass, Theology
of the Body Retreat for 2nd year students until 5:00pm.
___ Sun., Feb. 28, 2021 – Final preparation meeting for 2nd year Confirmation students and parents is at
11:00 am in English or 1:30 pm in Spanish – Corpus Christi Great Hall, ** Turn in student letter to the bishop
requesting Confirmation (1st draft) ***Turn in Letters from parents to their students to be given at Reconciliation
Service, April 24.
___ Sun., March 21, 2021 – Fr. Tom or Fr. Enrique will visit 1st year Confirmation class, Questions and answer
(parents welcome). Fr. Tom or Fr. Enrique will visit 2nd year Confirmation class, all Catholic and public students
attend for question and answer (parents welcome)
___ Sun., April 18, 2021 – Confirmation candidate and sponsor (parents welcome too) will meet with DRE to
review final preparations for Confirmation

An Overview of Confirmation Preparation
Preparation in Four Parts
1. Parent Partnership
We partner with parents to teach the faith to our children. Corpus Christi parish is
not the sole catechist of children. If this is the case, your children will most likely not
stay active in our faith. For our catechesis (faith instruction) to have a lasting effect with our
children, the faith must come from within the family. Parent’s example, daily prayer in
the home, and weekly participation at Mass with regular reception of the sacraments,
will be the example your children will follow.
So that you will continue to grow in your understanding of our faith, please attend and
participate in all of our meetings and read all the documents we make available to you so
that we can help you to teach your children the Catholic faith.
2. Knowledge
In the first year of Faith Formation class, our catechists review the basic teachings of
the Catholic faith. This includes an instruction on the bible, the Holy Mass, and an
introduction to the sacrament of Confirmation.
In the second year of Faith Formation class, our catechists will focus on preparing the
candidate to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.
Candidates are responsible to:
● Attend class monthly, listen and participate respectfully, to learn the Church
teachings,
● Master an understanding and knowledge of the faith by reviewing the prayers and
precepts of the Church. The 2nd year preparation requires the completion of the
Faith and Prayer Mastery Sheet. Parents are asked to verify that our students
truly have learned these basic prayers and beliefs of the Church.
● Complete all requirements and turn in documents by the date they are due.
By the end of March in the second year of preparation, it is the responsibility of the pastor,
the parent and the student, the DRE (Director of Faith Formation) and the catechist to
determine if the student is adequately prepared to receive the Sacrament of
Confirmation. This is a journey of faith and not to be entered into without a sincere desire
by the parents and students to do what is necessary.

3. Service Ministry
Confirmation preparation is a journey toward becoming a Catholic actively living in service
and witness. Stewardship, giving of your time, talent, and treasure, is a way of life for
a Catholic.
As a steward of the Church, each candidate is asked to complete a minimum of four
service projects: two projects can be completed the first year and two the second year, or
all four projects can be completed the second year by the end of March.
Confirmandi are to actively serve the needs of the parish through ministry. Your service is
needed at Mass: to run our PowerPoint presentation at Corpus Christi Church, and to serve
as greeters, ushers, and altar servers. At least half of your service projects should be in
service of your parish.
4. Sponsors: Faith-sharing and Commitment
Sponsors are to actively help in the candidate’s preparation and be supportively
present at the Confirmation ceremony. The sponsor is to continually help the candidate
to develop the grace received at Baptism. The sponsor is to set an example for the
candidate by their life. The sponsor can be the baptismal godparents, but can also be
someone else. Parents cannot be the sponsors.
Sponsors will be:
● A mature practicing Catholic, at least 16 years old,
● Is baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church,
● Is a Catholic in good-standing,
● If married, must be married in the Catholic Church, and
● Is committed to growth in the Catholic Church.
The relationship between the Confirmation candidate and the sponsor is formed through
prayer and faith sharing.
In the first year of preparation, candidates will visit with their parents to discuss
acceptable sponsors and select one.
In the second year of preparation, candidates will meet at least twice for faith sharing.
Candidates and sponsors are to meet during the seasons of Advent and Lent to talk
about faith and prayer. Each meeting can be completed in less than an hour and require
the candidate and sponsor to spend time talking about what it means to live one’s Catholic
faith. Forms for the Advent and Lent meetings are in the Confirmation packet.

From the beginning, the Church has been
faithful to Jesus’s command:
“Do this in remembrance of me.”
We faithfully respond to this command when we
attend Holy Mass each weekend and on holy
days of obligation. At the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass we repeat his actions and words, and
remember all He did for us, “until He comes.”
Mother Teresa once wrote: "Jesus is my God/ Jesus is
my Spouse/ Jesus is my Life/ Jesus is my Everything.
Because of this, I am never afraid." Mother Teresa went
to Mass every day. If we love the Mass as she did, we, too,
will live in Jesus and He in us, and will we never be afraid.
Six Reasons to Attend and Pray the Holy Mass
1. The Command of God
The Third of the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God is, "Remember to keep holy the Sabbath
day" (Exodus 20:8).
2. The Command of Christ.
The Mass was instituted at the Last Supper by Jesus before his Crucifixion. The Last Supper was the
first Mass. When we celebrate the Mass, we repeat the Last Supper, as Jesus commanded us to do. In
doing this, we remember and re-present his great act of love for us on the Cross — taking our sins upon
himself so that we, if we follow his commandments, can live with him forever in heaven.
3. The Command of the Church.
The Church teaches that we must fulfill the command of Jesus ("Do this in memory of me") by attending
Sunday Mass (or the Vigil Mass the night before). To fail to fulfill this obligation through our own fault,
the Church teaches, is a serious sin.
4. The Church speaks with the authority of Jesus
Why should we obey these teachings of the Church? Where does the Church get its authority? From
Jesus. In Matthew 16:18-19, Jesus made Peter the head of his Church — the first Pope. He gave Peter
and the Church "the keys to the kingdom of heaven. “The Church's authority in faith and morals is
absolute because Christ's is absolute.
5. What we do at Mass
The Mass is first of all a sacrifice — the perfect sacrifice, created by Jesus. Through the priest we offer
Jesus, Body and Blood, to the Father, just as Jesus offered Himself to the Father on the Cross. In an
unbloody way, we repeat — make present — Christ's death and Resurrection. Through this memorial of
Jesus, we offer God our praise, sorrow for our sins, and deepest thanks.
The Mass is also a meal. At the Consecration, the bread and wine, through the power of the Holy Spirit,
become the Body and Blood of Christ. Not a mere symbol, but Jesus's real flesh and real blood, under
12the appearance of bread and wine. When we receive Holy Communion, we receive Jesus Himself. He is
real food for our soul. He said this very plainly:
6. The benefits of Mass
What are the benefits of Holy Communion? It strengthens our union with Jesus; He lives within us in a
special way. It cleanses us from venial sins. (Mortal sins require forgiveness in Confession.) It gives us
grace to avoid sin in the future. It increases our love of God and neighbor
Our ancestors risked persecution, even death, to be able to take part in the Mass. We all need the
graces and strength that come from the Mass. This faith has sustained families for generations. We are
to pass on this understanding of the benefits of the Mass to others, rather than be indifferent. This is an
enormous responsibility.
If we give God a chance, He will help us experience the tremendous benefits of the Mass and the
Eucharist. Be patient. Bring an attitude of prayer and thanksgiving to Mass, and you will reap great
spiritual riches: consolation, confidence, peace, deep happiness, and spiritual strength for the
challenges of life.
1st & 2nd Year Confirmation Students
Attending Sunday Mass (or vigil Mass the night before) each week is a serious
responsibility of parents and students. During this year, 1st and 2nd year Confirmation
students will drop a special attendance card in the collection each weekend at a Corpus
Christi church. Be sure you indicate which church you attended, your name and the date.
Extra cards will be available at the main entrances to each Corpus Christi church.

Desde el principio, la Iglesia ha sido fiel al mandato de
Jesús: "Haz esto en memoria mía". Respondemos fielmente
a este comando cuando asistimos a la Santa Misa cada fin
de semana y en días santos de obligación. En el Santo
Sacrificio de la Misa, repetimos sus acciones y palabras, y
recordamos todo lo que hizo por nosotros, "hasta que Él
venga".
La Madre Teresa escribió una vez:
"Jesús es mi Dios / Jesús es mi

Seis razones para asistir y rezar la Santa Misa
1. El mandato de Dios
El tercero de los diez mandamientos que Dios le dio a Moisés es: "Recuerda santificar el día de reposo"
(Éxodo 20: 8).
2. El mandato de Cristo.
La misa fue instituida en la última cena por Jesús antes de su crucifixión. La Última Cena fue la primera
Misa. Cuando celebramos la Misa, repetimos la Última Cena, como Jesús nos mandó hacer. Al hacer
esto, recordamos y volvemos a presentar su gran acto de amor por nosotros en la Cruz: tomar nuestros
pecados sobre sí mismo para que, si seguimos sus mandamientos, podamos vivir con él para siempre
en el cielo.
3. El comando de la Iglesia.
La Iglesia enseña que debemos cumplir el mandato de Jesús ("Haz esto en memoria mía") asistiendo a
la Misa dominical (o la Misa de vigilia la noche anterior). El incumplimiento de esta obligación por
nuestra propia culpa, enseña la Iglesia, es un pecado grave.
4. La Iglesia habla con la autoridad de Jesús.
¿Por qué debemos obedecer estas enseñanzas de la Iglesia? ¿De dónde obtiene la Iglesia su autoridad?
De Jesús En Mateo 16: 18-19, Jesús convirtió a Pedro en la cabeza de su Iglesia, el primer Papa. Le dio a
Pedro y a la Iglesia "las llaves del reino de los cielos". La autoridad de la Iglesia en la fe y la moral es
absoluta porque la de Cristo es absoluta.
145. Lo que hacemos en misa
La misa es ante todo un sacrificio: el sacrificio perfecto, creado por Jesús. A través del sacerdote
ofrecemos a Jesús, Cuerpo y Sangre, al Padre, así como Jesús se ofreció al Padre en la Cruz. De manera
no sangrienta, repetimos, hacemos presente, la muerte y resurrección de Cristo. A través de este
memorial de Jesús, le ofrecemos a Dios nuestra alabanza, tristeza por nuestros pecados y nuestro más
profundo agradecimiento.
La misa es también una comida. En la Consagración, el pan y el vino, a través del poder del Espíritu
Santo.
6. Los beneficios de la misa
¿Cuáles son los beneficios de la Sagrada Comunión? Fortalece nuestra unión con Jesús; Él vive dentro
de nosotros de una manera especial. Nos limpia de los pecados veniales. (Los pecados mortales
requieren perdón en la confesión). Nos da gracia para evitar el pecado en el futuro. Aumenta nuestro
amor a Dios y al prójimo.
Nuestros antepasados arriesgaron la persecución, incluso la muerte, para poder participar en la Misa.
Todos necesitamos las gracias y la fuerza que provienen de la Misa. Esta fe ha sostenido a las familias
por generaciones. Debemos transmitir esta comprensión de los beneficios de la Misa a los demás, en
lugar de ser indiferentes. Esta es una enorme responsabilidad.

Your Confirmation Banner is made by you, the student about to be confirmed. It represents your
spiritual journey of faith as you encounter Jesus Christ in unexpected ways. This journey has everything
to do with discovering the very meaning of life and learning how to live it to the full. Ask the Holy
Spirit to speak to you and soften your heart as you become a receptive vessel to God’s grace. Through
the power of the Holy Spirit you can be profoundly transformed and brought to where God wants you to
be.
Confirmation banners contain symbols that tell your story with images about this journey of
transformation. A carefully selected biblical quote or phrase of importance to you, can be chosen.
Your name and the name of your patron saint might be displayed. Whatever you select, it is vastly
important that you prayerfully reflect on how to create it so that it will remind you of this once in a
lifetime experience. Please use the card attached to write a complete sentence of the significance of
your banner’s symbols and words in your journey of faith to Confirmation.
A felt panel not exceeding 11x 17 inches will be provided for you to create your banner. Your full name
will be printed on the back. These banners will be returned to you as a keepsake of this experience on

27Interview: Confirmation Readiness and Discernment
Growth is vital to human life. Spiritually, we grow when the grace we received in Baptism is nourished
as we attend Mass and receive Our Lord Jesus in Holy Communion. Confirmation completes the
process of initiation into the Christian community. Confirmation is a starting point in the adventure of
being a Disciple of Jesus Christ.
As a Confirmation Candidate, you and your parents will meet with the parish pastor in January
of your second year of preparation to determine your readiness to be confirmed. Interview
scheduling begins in November. Each interview will last about 15 minutes and is held on
Saturday mornings.
To prepare for your interview, answer honestly and sincerely the following questions. You are
welcome to bring any questions you have to Father at this time.
Readiness to Receive the Sacrament of Confirmation
1. Discerning to pledge to complete all preparations to receive the sacrament of Confirmation is
