Feast of the Assump on of Mary into Heaven
In order to appreciate this mid-summer feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin
Mary into Heaven, we must recall a feast the Church celebrated in the spring, the Annuncia on of
the Lord (March 25). On that feast we heard the familiar gospel story in which a “messenger from
God” an angel addressed Mary as the “highly favored one”
indica ng the special role God had in mind for her. The angel Gabriel which means “God is
strong,” tells Mary that she is to bear a child who will be a descendant of the Old Testament King
David thus fulfilling the prophecy concerning the Messiah being of the “house of David,” and her
child will also be the Son of God. We are told that Mary is at first “greatly troubled” by Gabriel’s message and
“considered in her mind” what this might mean and asks the angel “How can this be, I have no husband?” The angle
tells her she will conceive by the power to the Holy Spirit and the child born will be the Son of God. Then in her great
act of faith, her greatest moment in all of scripture. Mary says: “I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as
you say.” By these words Mary becomes Jesus’ first and greatest disciple.
Mary’s great prayer of blessing God, The Magnificat is a model of how all Chris ans are called to accept the will
of God joyfully. Her prayer is used every day by the Church at the close of Evening Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours.
The Magnificat is a prayer of praise and steeped in ideas common in the Old Testament. God’s concern for the poor
and le out is remembered; the proud are sca ered, the mighty cast down from their thrones, the lowly li ed, the
rich sent away empty. Later in Luke’s gospel Jesus will set forth similar teachings in the Bea tudes “Blessed are you
poor…Blessed are you that hunger now…Blessed are you who weep now…” [Luke 6: 20 – 26]. So, both the Magnificat
and the Bea tudes give the scriptural founda on of the Church’s love of the poor, downtrodden, outcasts, and
powerless. All of whom we s ll hear and see in many ways every day.
The gospel reading for today’s is taken from the Visita on of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, an elderly rela ve, is
with child too, though she would seem to be long past childbearing age. In the story we hear that Mary immediately
sets out to visit her cousin and spend me with her. Pope Benedict comments on this scene “…we find Mary engaged
in a service of charity to her cousin Elizabeth with whom she remained for “about three months” to assist her in the
final phase of her pregnancy. “My soul magnifies the Lord,” she says on that visit. In these words, she expresses her
whole program of life: not se ng herself at the center but leaving space for God who is encountered both in prayer
and service of neighbor --- only then does goodness enter the world. Mary’s greatness consists of is the fact that she
wants to magnify God, not herself.
Pope Benedict concludes the medita on, “Mary, Virgin and Mother shows us what love is and whence it draws its
origin and its constantly renewed power. To her we entrust the Church and her mission in the service of love. Holy
Mary, Mother of God, show us Jesus. Lead us to him. Teach us to know and love him so that we too can become
capable of true love and be fountains of living water in the midst of a thirs ng world.” - Fr. Bill

Fiesta de la Asunción de María al Cielo
Para apreciar esta fiesta de mediados de verano de la Asunción de la San sima Virgen María al
cielo, debemos recordar una fiesta que la Iglesia celebró en primavera, la Anunciación del Señor
(25 de marzo). En esa fiesta escuchamos la conocida historia del evangelio en la que un
"mensajero de Dios" un ángel se dirigió a María como la "muy favorecida"
indicando el papel especial que Dios tenía en mente para ella. El ángel Gabriel, que significa "Dios
es fuerte", le dice a María que dará a luz un hijo que será descendiente del rey David del An guo
Testamento, cumpliendo así la profecía acerca de que el Mesías es de la "casa de David" y su hijo.
también será el Hijo de Dios. Se nos dice que María al principio está "muy preocupada" por el mensaje de Gabriel y
"considera en su mente" lo que esto podría significar y le pregunta al ángel "¿Cómo puede ser esto, no tengo
marido?" El ángulo le dice que concebirá por el poder del Espíritu Santo y el niño que nacerá será el Hijo de Dios.
Luego, en su gran acto de fe, su momento más grande en todas las Escrituras. María dice: “Soy la sierva del Señor.

Bienaventuranzas: "Bienaventurados los pobres ... Bienaventurados los que ahora enen hambre ... Bienaventurados
los que ahora lloran ..." [Lucas 6: 20-26]. Entonces, tanto el Magnificat como las Bienaventuranzas dan el fundamento
bíblico del amor de la Iglesia por los pobres, oprimidos, marginados y impotente. Todos los cuales todavía escuchamos
y vemos de muchas maneras todos los días.
La lectura del Evangelio de hoy está tomada de la Visitación de María a su prima Isabel, una pariente anciana que
también está encinta, aunque parece que ya ha pasado la edad fér l. En la historia escuchamos que Mary inmedi-
atamente se dispone a visitar a su prima y pasar empo con ella. El Papa Benedicto XVI comenta sobre esta escena “…
encontramos a María comprome da en un servicio de caridad a su prima Isabel con quien permaneció durante“ unos
tres meses ”para asis rla en la fase final de su embarazo. “Engrandece mi alma al Señor”, dice en esa visita. Con estas
palabras, expresa todo su programa de vida: no poniéndose en el centro, sino dejando espacio a Dios, al que se
encuentra tanto en la oración como en el servicio al prójimo, sólo entonces entra el bien en el mundo. La grandeza de
María consiste en el hecho de que quiere magnificar a Dios, no a ella misma.
El Papa Benedicto XVI concluye la meditación: “María, Virgen y Madre, nos muestra qué es el amor y de dónde
saca su origen y su fuerza constantemente renovada. A ella le confiamos la Iglesia y su misión al servicio del amor.
Santa María, Madre de Dios, muéstranos a Jesús. Condúcenos a él. Enséñanos a conocerlo y amarlo para que también
nosotros seamos capaces de amar verdadero y ser fuentes de agua viva en medio de un mundo sediento ”. - P. Bill

MISSION APPEAL ALL SAINTS

Our church is missionary by nature. Each of us as bap zed
Catholics are called to share in the work of evangeliza on. The
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston collaborates with mission groups
every year to raise fund for their missions through a program called the
Missionary Coopera ve Plan. The group assigned to our parish this year
is the Missionary Society of St. Paul. Fr. Robert Kajoh, MSP will be speaking to us from the Missionary
Society of St Paul on the weekend of August 21-22 There will be a second collec on to support them in
their work.
The Missionary Society of St. Paul (MSP) is a congrega on of priests founded in Nigeria in 1977.
The Society now has 275 priests. They are working in eleven countries of Africa, (South Africa, Malawi,
Botswana, Cameroon, Liberia, Chad, Central African Republic, The Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya and Southern
Sudan), Grenada in the West Indies, the United States, England, Sweden and Ireland. They also have about
134 seminarians in their seminary in Nigeria.
Their mission in Malawi provides rehabilita on and support for over 360 orphans who lost their
parents due to AIDS. They need our financial assistance to con nue this mission. They also need funds to:
1) provide fresh water wells, and educa on in rural communi es of Chad, Malawi, South Sudan, Kenya and
Nigeria; 2) Sponsoring seminarians, our future priests; 3) Suppor ng priests in the founding/building of
new churches. Your support to this worthy cause will be an immense encouragement to the Missionary
Society of St. Paul to as they con nue to take the good news to those desperately in need of it. May God

Nuestra iglesia católica es una iglesia misionera. Cada uno de nosotros, católicos bau zados, es llamado a
par cipar en la obra de evangelización. La archidiócesis de Galveston-Houston colabora con grupos misioneros cada
año para recaudar fondos para sus misiones, atreves de un programa que se llama missionary Coopera ve plan. El
grupo asignado a nuestra iglesia este año se llama, La Sociedad Misionera de San Pablo de Nigeria. Padre Roberto,
MSP, de la Sociedad misionera de San Pablo va estar con nosotros el fin de semana 21-22 de Agosto para compar r
la historia de su trabajo misionero. Abrá una segunda colecta para apoyar su trabajo misionero.
La Sociedad Misionera de San Pablo es una congregación religiosa fundado en Nigeria en el año 1977 por
Dominic Cardenal Ekandem y establecido por la conferencia de los obispos de Nigeria. El grupo ahora ene 275

pregnancy and also assists with items for newborn babies.

gently used clothes size 3 months through size 6, toys and books. Items may be dropped off at the parish
office during business hours Monday—Friday.
