welcome Once again, Instituto Cervantes offers an ambitious and diverse program, which this year brings Gender Equality and Historical Memory to the main stage. Among our exhibitions we encourage you to learn about one of the great poetic voices from the 20th century in Spain, Miguel Hernandez, as well as contemporary Catalan art brought to us by Colección Bassat in collaboration with La Nau-Gaudí. Travel along the history of the Galician exodus to New York, through the lens of photographer Alberto Martí or enjoy a new take on the comic genre thanks to the illustrations from the female authors of the new graphic novel. Conferences led by renowned writers such as José Ángel Mañas or the Spanish Literature Prize winner Kirmen Uribe, who will link science and literature in a discussion with neuroscientist Rafael Yuste. Historians such as Rafael Rojas or Emilio Cueto will bring us closer to present day Cuba, and specialists like Susana Martinez Vidal, will explain Frida Kahlo’s relevance in current fashion. We will screen films from periods such as “New Galician Cinema”, “Once Upon a Time in Almeria” and “Sephardic Cinema Festival.” We will have the pleasure of hearing Joan Manuel Serrat, who will delight us with a concert. Our wine tastings and book clubs will continue. And for the first time, we are excited to launch our tango workshops. All of these events aim to share the cultural wealth from the Hispanic-American world and to contribute, at the same time, to a more pluralist, tolerant and inclusive society. We look forward to seeing you! This period of hedonism and consumerism, usually identified along with the Movida Madrileña, whose evolution has led to an institutional crisis that still lingers. Writer, José Ángel Mañas, will talk about how literature, music, cinema, politics and society converged in order to develop a period of time quite unknown, but crucial, of Spanish history. Moderated by AlmudenA Ariza In recent years, many female illustrators, cartoonists, creators and graphic humorists have succeeded in the male dominated graphic novel genre by publishing great stories told from a new point of view that demystified themes that are traditionally linked to women. On the occasion of the launch of the book Hardcore Maternity we will sink ourselves into these relevant issues. #d women e s i g n out of the box motherhood & gender inequality overcoming discrimination with Ana Fernández-Ardavin, Teresa López, Blanca Narváez & Jumana Trad. Moderated by Julieta de Micheo Achieving gender equality by 2030 requires taking urgent measures to eliminate the root causes of the discrimination. For that purpose it is necessary to broaden the framework of actions, since the data show that the gaps in access to employment, wage and positions of responsibility are broadened when variables such as maternity are taken into account. When a society doesn’t understand its own historical processes it becomes less participative and its members are distanced from each other. In a democracy, there is no single memory but a group of memories that must be considered. Therefore, it is crucial to listen to each other and to develop a culture of dialog together with a critical judgement in order to build stronger and more supportive societies. This talk will address the state of affairs in Galicia, where many associations are working for this matter.
