Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time - Jesus, our Healer, and our Hope - Saint John the Baptist
Mark´s gospel is truly a moving testament to who Jesus was and the power He displayed for the good
of all. In the Father´s need for his dying daughter and the woman with the uncurable bleeding, we see people
that reflect who we are and have been in the last year. Here, at St. John and Good Counsel, I think we have
always experienced these needs, just that in the last year it has intensified. Where have we always gone in all
our needs? To God. At first, we may be stubborn, thinking we can handle it ourselves, or that this too will
pass, but in the end, we turn to our God and savior.
One thing that both these characters have in common is their faith in Jesus. One falls at His feet and
begs, “come lay your hands on her and she will be saved”; the other nears and says: “If I but touch his clothes,
I shall be cured.” Both have faith in Jesus, both seek him with all their being. Their grave necessities take them
to Jesus, but their faith in Jesus that motivates the healing.
How much do we have to heal from these past months of loss, separation, illness, uneasiness, and
fear? How much have we searched for healing, turned to the Lord, and started on that path of regaining our
sense of normalcy? How much we have done as Christian people to always be a light for others throughout all
the storms that have come about?
As we are taking steps, slowly but surely, into opening up, what are we opening up to? What are we
looking forward to being, doing, to be restarting, and how? Before tomorrow comes, let's take a loving gaze
upon these past months and years. For 153 years Saint John´s and 135 at Good Counsel, are churches have
been beacons for the people in Bed-Stuy. So it's no surprise that during the pandemic, we have continued to
feed our people, spiritually and bodily. We have continued to serve, pray, visit and anímate our community in
the church and the neighborhood community. We have looked for each other, not just for the parishioners, but
for all. For we know, many of our neighbors have been in need and that God looks out for all His children, I
hope that as we celebrate the birth of our patron saint, it may also allow us to be renewed in spirit, in faith, and
discipleship. That we always recognize our Lord, the blessings he bestows upon his people, and be ready to
always be another Christ for all those we encounter and are called to serve in any way we can. We can
continue to make a difference. We are a Spirit-driven, Gospel living people.

Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario - Jesús, nuestro Sanador y nuestra Esperanza - San Juan Bautista
El evangelio de Marcos es verdaderamente un testimonio conmovedor de quién fue Jesús y del poder
que mostró para el bien de todos. En la necesidad del Padre por su hija moribunda y la mujer con la
hemorragia incurable, vemos personas que reflejan quiénes somos y hemos sido en el último año. Aquí, en San
Juan an Buen Consejo, creo que siempre hemos experimentado estas necesidades, sólo que en el último año se
ha intensificado. ¿A dónde hemos acudido en todas nuestras necesidades? A Dios. Al principio, podemos ser
tercos, pensando que podemos manejarlo nosotros mismos, o que esto también pasará, pero al final, nos
volvemos a nuestro Dios y salvador.
Una cosa que ambos personajes tienen en común es su fe en Jesús. Uno cae a sus pies y le ruega:
“Ven y pon tus manos sobre ella y se salvará”; el otro se acerca y dice: "Si toco su manto, me curaré". Ambos
tienen fe en Jesús, ambos lo buscan con todo su ser. Sus graves necesidades los llevan a Jesús, pero su fe en
Jesús es lo que motiva la curación.
¿Cuánto tenemos que curar de estos últimos meses de pérdida, separación, enfermedad, inquietud y
miedo? ¿Cuánto hemos buscado la curación, nos hemos vuelto al Señor y hemos iniciado el camino de
recuperar nuestro sentido de la normalidad? ¿Cuánto hemos hecho como pueblo cristiano para ser una luz para
los demás a través de todas las tormentas que han llegado?
A medida que avanzamos, lenta pero con seguridad, hacia la apertura, ¿a qué nos abrimos? ¿Qué
esperamos ser, hacer, reiniciar y cómo? Antes de que llegue el mañana, echemos una mirada amorosa a estos
últimos meses y años. Durante 153 años San Juan y 135 en Buen Consejo, estas iglesias que han sido faros
para la gente de Bed-Stuy. Por eso, no es de extrañar que durante la pandemia hayamos continuado
alimentando a nuestra gente, espiritual y corporalmente. Hemos continuado sirviendo, orando, visitando y
animando a nuestra comunidad en la iglesia y la comunidad del vecindario. Nos hemos buscado, no sólo a los
feligreses, sino a todos. Porque sabemos que muchos de nuestros vecinos han tenido necesidad y que Dios
cuida de todos sus hijos, espero que al celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro santo patrón, también nos permita
renovarnos en espíritu, en fe y discipulado. Que siempre reconozcamos a nuestro Señor, las bendiciones que
otorga a su pueblo, y que estemos listos para ser siempre otro Cristo para todos aquellos con quienes nos
encontramos y estamos llamados a servir de cualquier manera que podamos. Podemos seguir marcando la
diferencia. Somos un pueblo que vive el Evangelio, impulsado por el Espíritu.

Papal Reflection - It´s all about FAITH
This Sunday’s Gospel passage presents two miracles performed by Jesus, almost describing them as a type of
triumphal march toward life. Initially the Evangelist speaks about a certain Jairus, one of the rulers of the Synagogue, who
approaches Jesus and beseeches Him to go to his home because his 12-year-old daughter is dying. Jesus agrees and goes with
him; but, along the way, word arrives that the girl is dead. We can imagine that father’s reaction. But Jesus says to him: “Do not
fear, only believe” . When they arrive at Jairus’ house, Jesus sends out the people who were weeping - there were also women
mourners who were wailing loudly - and He enters the room with just the parents and the three disciples, and speaking to the
dead girl He says: “Little girl, I say to you, arise” . And immediately the girl gets up, as if waking from a deep sleep.
Within the narrative of this miracle, Mark adds another: the healing of a woman who suffers from a haemorrhage and is
healed as soon as she touches Jesus’ garment . Here what is striking is the fact that this woman’s faith attracts — to me the word
“robs” comes to mind - the divine saving power that is in Christ, who, feeling that “power had gone forth from him”, tried to
understand who it was. And when the woman, with much shame, comes forward and confesses the whole truth, He tells her:
“Daughter, your faith has made you well” .
It is a matter of two interlocking narratives, with a single core: faith; and they show Jesus as the wellspring of life, as the
One who restores life to those who trust fully in him. The two protagonists, that is, the little girl’s father and the sick woman, are
not disciples of Jesus yet they are satisfied through their faith. They have faith in that man. From this we understand that all are
permitted on the Lord’s path: no one should feel as an intruder, an interloper or one who has no right. To have access to His
heart, to Jesus’ heart, there is only one requirement: to feel in need of healing and to entrust yourself to Him. I ask you: do each
of you feel that you need to be healed? Of something, of some sin, of some problem? And, if you feel this, do you have faith in
Jesus? These are the two requirements in order to be healed, in order to have access to his heart: to feel in need of healing and to
entrust yourself to Him. Jesus goes to discover these people among the crowd and removes them from anonymity, frees them
from the fear of living and of taking risks. He does so with a look and a word which sets them back on the path after much
suffering and humiliation. We too are called to learn and to imitate these freeing words and this gaze which restores the will to
live to those who lack it.
In this Gospel passage the themes of faith and of new life, which Jesus came to offer to all, are intertwined. Jesus is
Lord, and before him physical death is like a dream: there is no reason to despair. Another death is the one to fear: that of the
heart hardened by evil! When we feel we have a hardened heart, a heart that is hardened, allow me to say, a mummified heart, we
should be afraid of this. This is the death of the heart. But sin too, the mummified heart too, is never the last word with Jesus,
because he has brought us the infinite mercy of the Father. And even if we have hit rock bottom, his tender and strong voice
reaches us: “I say to you, arise!”. It is beautiful to hear that word of Jesus addressed to each one of us: “I say to you, arise! Go.
Stand up. Take courage, arise!”.
Reflexión Papal - Se trata de FE
El pasaje del Evangelio de este domingo presenta dos milagros realizados por Jesús, casi describiéndolos como una
especie de marcha triunfal hacia la vida. Inicialmente el evangelista habla de un tal Jairo, uno de los gobernantes de la sinagoga,
que se acerca a Jesús y le suplica que vaya a su casa porque su hija de 12 años se está muriendo. Jesús está de acuerdo y va con
él; pero, en el camino, llega la noticia de que la niña está muerta. Podemos imaginar la reacción de ese padre. Pero Jesús le dice:
“No temas, cree solamente”. Cuando llegan a la casa de Jairo, Jesús envía a la gente que estaba llorando - también había mujeres
dolientes que lloraban en voz alta - y entra a la habitación solo con los padres y los tres discípulos, y hablando con la niña muerta
dice: “Niña, te digo, levántate”. E inmediatamente la niña se levanta, como si despertara de un sueño profundo.
Dentro de la narración de este milagro, Marcos agrega otro: la curación de una mujer que sufre una hemorragia y se cura
en cuanto toca el manto de Jesús. Aquí lo que llama la atención es el hecho de que la fe de esta mujer atrae - me viene a la mente
la palabra “roba” - el poder salvador divino que está en Cristo, quien, sintiendo que “el poder había salido de él”, trató de
entender quién era. Y cuando la mujer, con mucha vergüenza, se adelanta y le confiesa toda la verdad, Él le dice: “Hija, tu fe te
ha salvado”.
Se trata de dos narrativas entrelazadas, con un solo núcleo: la fe; y muestran a Jesús como la fuente de la vida, como
Aquel que devuelve la vida a quienes confían plenamente en él. Los dos protagonistas, es decir, el padre de la niña y la enferma,
no son discípulos de Jesús pero están satisfechos con su fe. Tienen fe en ese hombre. De esto entendemos que todos están
permitidos en el camino del Señor: nadie debe sentirse como un intruso, un intruso o alguien que no tiene ningún derecho. Para
tener acceso a Su corazón, al corazón de Jesús, solo hay un requisito: sentirse necesitado de curación y encomendarse a Él. Les
pregunto: ¿sienten cada uno de ustedes que necesitan ser sanados? ¿De algo, de algún pecado, de algún problema? Y, si sientes
esto, ¿tienes fe en Jesús? Estos son los dos requisitos para ser curado, para tener acceso a su corazón: sentirse necesitado de
curación y encomendarse a Él. Jesús va a descubrir a estas personas entre la multitud y las saca del anonimato, las libera del
miedo a vivir y a correr riesgos. Lo hace con una mirada y una palabra que los vuelve a poner en el camino después de mucho
sufrimiento y humillación. También nosotros estamos llamados a aprender e imitar estas palabras liberadoras y esta mirada que
devuelve la voluntad de vivir a los que carecen de ella.
En este pasaje evangélico se entrelazan los temas de la fe y de la vida nueva que Jesús vino a ofrecer a todos. Jesús es el
Señor, y ante él la muerte física es como un sueño: no hay razón para desesperarse. Otra muerte es la que hay que temer: ¡la del
corazón endurecido por el mal! Cuando sentimos que tenemos un corazón endurecido, un corazón endurecido, permítanme decir,
un corazón momificado, debemos tener miedo de esto. Esta es la muerte del corazón. Pero también el pecado, también el corazón
momificado, nunca es la última palabra con Jesús, porque nos ha traído la misericordia infinita del Padre. Y aunque hayamos
tocado fondo, nos llega su voz tierna y fuerte: “¡A ti te digo, levántate!”. Es hermoso escuchar esa palabra de Jesús dirigida a
cada uno de nosotros: “¡Les digo, levántense! Ir. Ponerse de pie. ¡Anímate, levántate! ”.

Year of Saint Joseph
“Windows on Saint Joseph”

On many occasions, I have mused on the beautiful stained glass windows in our St. Thomas
More Church on the Queens’ campus of St. John’s University. Sometimes, I will go to the Church to
pray, and my attention gets drawn to a particular scene. I will then begin to think about the story and
where it all leads. In my head, I have created a quiz on the windows which reflects my ponderings. So
far, it has remained for my sole (soul?) entertainment.
Some of the questions in my quiz reflect the fact that the windows put certain characters consistently
in the same color garments. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, for example, is regularly presented in blue
and white. This would not be unexpected for her. Most of us would usually envision her in blue as
consonant with a tradition of the Church. Jesus is clothed in red and white—except the glorified Lord
who appears all in white. Now the question: who else is regularly garbed in red and white?
With a little inspection, I think that one would find that it is St. Joseph. I find that notion very
attractive. The idea that Jesus takes after Joseph seems correct, and the windows subtly remind us of
that truth.
Since Advent, Joseph has been in my thoughts. For some reason, he has come to the fore in my
reflection. When I have been invited to give a talk for some parish community, I have steadfastly
striven to speak about him. On March 19, the Church celebrates the principal feast of St. Joseph each
year. In this year, the celebration got moved to March 20 because of the Sunday. As it happens, I am
preaching a parish mission on the 20-22 in a parish named after St. Joseph. Is it any surprise that I will
be speaking about him?
The theme that I am following in one form or another flows from the popular expression “like
father, like son.” Or said another way “the apple does not fall far from the tree,” or still another way
and my favorite (following Wordsworth) “the child is father to the man.” Clearly, few stories involve St.
Joseph in the New Testament, but some evoke the recognition of similar traits in Jesus. And some
words and actions in the stories of Jesus might be attributed to the influence of St. Joseph. I am very
serious about not getting involved in fanciful imaginings. Those kinds of fantasies are not attractive to
me. I am also careful about not using images of St. Joseph which picture him as an old man. The
thinking behind those portrayals does not convince me.
The love of a father for a son and the love of a son for a father, the lessons of carpentry, the
words and actions of a faithful Jewish man, the love of Mary and respect for women, all of these
provide material for a rich, honest, reflection on the relation of Joseph and Jesus. I do not know if they
wore the same colors, but I do believe that their hearts tended in the same direction. When we had
the readings of the transfiguration recently, a thought occurred to me: is it possible that Joseph could
have spoken these same words:
“This is my beloved Son,
with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.” (Mt 3:17)
