Mark’s gospel presents Jesus as the one sent by God to establish the kingdom or reign of God by
confronting and ultimately defeating the forces of evil. In the words of Mark, Jesus has come to “bind the
strong man,” namely Satan, and plunder his house or domain. Jesus’ whole life and ministry are directed
towards preaching repentance, a turning away from sin, and bringing God’s healing presence and touch
to all people. When Jesus chooses disciples and sends them out on ministry, he commissions them to
continue, deepen and intensify the work he has begun.
This Sunday’s gospel focuses on Mark’s Jesus sending forth his disciples on mission. He sends them
forth to heal, giving them authority over unclean spirits, while preaching repentance and reconciliation. At the
same time, Jesus prepares them by advising them to travel light and to be ready for rejection and possible failure.
Today’s readings guide us in being faithful to our evangelizing task even in the midst of opposition and
rejection.
Responsorial Psalm 85 centers on God’s enduring covenant love (kindness) as the source of all that
sustains us. This faithful love relationship is the source of peace, of continual attunement to the Lord, of
justice and truth, and of all that aids us in being faithful witness to the Lord’s presence. We are sent to preach not
doctrine but God’s enduring faithful love, enabling others to experience that love through our lives and
actions. This Sunday we are invited to call upon the Lord and sing, “Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant
us your salvation.”
The first reading from the prophet Amos exemplifies a significant aspect of what fidelity to God’s
covenant entails. In our desire and mission to share God’s love with others, some might not be ready or open
to receiving that message. God’s love demands that we change our way of acting and thinking towards
ourselves and others. This is the essence of conversion. Some are not ready or willing to do so, resulting
in an attack on the messenger and the message. Such experiences can be discouraging and debilitating.
Yet, like Amos, we are to focus on God’s covenant love and mission as the source of our strength and courage.
God has set us on this evangelizing path, and God will sustain us in whatever struggles surface.
The letter to the Ephesians gets at the core of God’s covenant love with all humanity. God calls all people into
relationship, choosing and loving us freely and completely. In Christ, God manifested the richness and
abundance of that love, and we are the beneficiaries of God’s saving love and redemption. Being chosen by God,
we have the responsibility to proclaim that choice and love to all we encounter. God’s love is all inclusive. It
is up to others to open themselves up to it. It is up to us to continually proclaim that love with our lives.
As Mark narrates Jesus’ story, he emphasizes the importance of the mission to establish the reign of God.
God’s covenant love is available to all, but Mark also consistently highlights the opposition to Jesus and his
mission. Establishing God’s reign demands a change of mind and heart, a movement away from the powers
of evil that dominate and oppress, and a movement towards God. This process of repentance and
conversion is usually resisted by those who find it too challenging or opposed to their own perceived way
of living and acting. Such opposition results in rejection, persecution and oppression of those who desire
to cooperate in building up the reign of God.
In Baptism we commit ourselves to continue the mission and
ministry of Jesus by building up God’s reign wherever we are
planted. We model ourselves on Jesus who walked that same path,
trusting in God’s love, wisdom, and guidance, no matter how challenging Sunday, July 11

dirigidos a predicar el arrepentimiento, alejarse del pecado y llevar la presencia y el toque sanador de Dios
a todas las personas. Cuando Jesús elige discípulos y los envía al ministerio, los encomienda para
continuar, profundizar e intensificar el trabajo que ha comenzado.
El evangelio de este domingo se enfoca en el Jesús de Marcos enviando a sus discípulos a misión. Los

La primera lectura del profeta Amós ejemplifica un aspecto significativo de lo que implica la fidelidad al
pacto de Dios. En nuestro deseo y misión de compartir el amor de Dios con los demás, algunos podrían
no estar listos o abiertos para recibir ese mensaje. El amor de Dios exige que cambiemos nuestra forma de actuar
