Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord
The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the
Epiphany of the Lord this year on Sunday,
January 2, 2022. The Epiphany of the Lord
commemorates the visit of the magi to worship
the baby Jesus as told in the Gospel of Mat-
thew: “Behold, magi from the east arrived in
Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is the newborn king
of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and
have come to do him homage.’”
The word “epiphany” comes from the
Greek epiphainen, which means “to manifest,”
“appear,” or “make known.” Through the birth of Jesus, God is manifested in the flesh. The
Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the revelation of Jesus, the Son of God, to the world.
The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the
world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi)
from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Gali-
lee. In the magi, representatives of the neighboring pagan religions, the Gospel sees the first-
fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of salvation through the Incarnation.” Cate-

The observance celebrates the public manifestation of the Jesus’ kingship to the world when
the Magi visit and adore him. In the Gospel of Luke, an angel of the Lord reveals Jesus as
“savior,” “Messiah,” and “Lord” to the shepherds when Jesus is born and laid in a manger (see
Luke 2). But the visit of the Magi reveals another facet of Jesus’ destiny—his kingship.
In Matthew, chapter two, the Magi announce to King Herod the purpose of their visit. Arriving
in Jerusalem to seek the Messiah, they ask Herod, King of Judea, “Where is the newborn king
of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” Departing Jerusa-
lem and following the star’s movement, they find the child Jesus and his mother, Mary, in
Bethlehem. Joyfully, they prostrate themselves before the King and present to the newborn
King gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Through this prophetic event, the kingship of Je-
sus is revealed, while the gifts brought by the Magi prophecy the type of kingship Jesus would
have.
While tradition holds that the Magi were three kings or wise men, Scripture is silent on the
number of kings who arrived to give homage to the Lord, as well as the background of the Ma-
gi (kings, astronomers, etc.), and their names. Nonetheless, while extensive details are absent
in Sacred Scriptures, Christian tradition holds that there were three wise men, named Caspar,

“LA EPIFANÍA”
Después de la Navidad, la Iglesia Católica celebra, el 6 de Enero, la FI-
ESTA DE LA EPIFANÍA que nos recuerda la visita de los Reyes Ma-
gos al Niño Jesús para adorarlo. Después de haber nacido Jesús en Be-
lén de Judea, en el tiempo del Rey Herodes, unos Magos de Oriente se
presentaron en Jerusalén diciendo: ¨ ¿Dónde está el que ha nacido, el
Rey de los Judíos? Porque hemos visto su estrella en el oriente y ven-
imos a adorarlo¨. 1. ¿POR QUÉ LOS MAGOS? Los Reyes Magos no
eran judíos, como lo eran José y María. Ellos venían de otras tierras
muy lejanas (de oriente: Persia y Babilonia), pero fueron siguiendo la
estrella que les mostraba el camino para encontrar al que habían oído
que sería el Rey de todo el mundo. Con la adoración de los Reyes Ma-
gos, Dios quiso enseñarnos, que Jesús vino a salvar a todos los hombres,
a todos los de diferentes países y razas, y que El sería Rey de todo el
mundo. 2. LA OBEDIENCIA. Algo especial lleva a los Reyes Magos a
Belén. Una estrella aparece en el cielo y algo dentro de su corazón les
dice que vayan... y dóciles, obedientes a este llamado, se ponen en
camino. ¡Mira qué prontitud para obedecer el llamado de Dios! En se-
guida dejan todo... patria, casa, familia, comodidades... y emprenden el
viaje. - Seguro que a veces tú habrás sentido en tu corazón un llamado
de Dios, una idea que Dios te da, algo que te pide que hagas. No vaciles,
no dudes... sé dócil y obediente como los Reyes Magos. Sigue siempre
el llamado de Dios, aunque en ese momento no entiendas bien. 3. LA PERSEVERANCIA. Cuando los Reyes
Magos siguieron la estrella, recorrieron un camino largo, difícil, incómodo, cansado. A veces la estrella se les
perdía; sin embargo, ellos nunca dudaron, fueron perseverantes, es decir, que siguieron a pesar de las difi-
cultades. Así a veces sucede en tu vida: lo que Dios te pide es difícil, cuesta sacrificio y trabajo. Recuerda que
solo el que persevera, el que es constante, el que lucha, es el que llega, es el que triunfa. 4. LA FE. Mira a los
Reyes Magos ya en Belén, la estrella se pone arriba del lugar donde está el niño recién nacido. Otra dificultad.
Ellos, Reyes que buscan a otro rey... ¿Van ahora a entrar a una cueva de animales? ¿Van a adorar a un niño
que no tiene más cuna que un pesebre? ¿Dónde está el palacio y el trono lujosos del rey? He aquí el mérito de
su fe. La fe de los Reyes Magos no se guía por las apariencias y cree lo que no ve. A través de esta pobreza,
los Reyes Magos descubren a Dios. Descubren que para Dios la riqueza no vale tanto como la sencillez. Así
debe ser tu fe: creer lo que no ves... creer aunque no entiendas. Así debe ser tu vida: amar la pobreza y la sen-
cillez como la amó el niño Jesús. 5. LA GENEROSIDAD. Los Reyes Magos no llegaron hasta el Niño Jesús
con las manos vacías, le llevaron tres regalos:
a) Oro --- que se le da a los reyes.
b) Incienso --- que se les da a los sacerdotes para usarlo en el altar.
c) Mirra --- un perfume que se untaba en la frente a los hombres escogidos. ¿Qué regalos puedes tú ofrecerle al
niño Dios? Ofrécele tus pequeños y grandes sacrificios, tu trabajo, tu cansancio, tus penas y también tus
alegrías, y sobre todo tu tiempo, tus quehaceres diarios y tu oración. Ofrécele a diario tu vida entera. Él sabrá
darte el mejor regalo a cambio: el MADRE Ccielo. 6. LA ALEGRÍA. Dice el Evangelio que los Reyes Magos
sintieron una gran alegría. Durante su camino, y más cuando vieron al niño Jesús, estaban muy contentos. Así
tú debes tratar de VIVIR ALEGRE TODOS LOS DÍAS. Tu alegría no debe depender de sí te va bien o mal en
la vida, sino que la alegría verdadera viene de saber que eres hijo de Dios, que Él te ama, que Él te creó y que
quiere que un día vayas a vivir con Él en el cielo para siempre. ¿No basta esto para ser feliz? 7. LA ON EL
HIJO. Dice el Evangelio: ¨Y encontraron al Niño con su Madre: María. No despreciemos este detalle otra vez
el Evangelio nos lo recuerda: el Niño está con su Madre. Aprende a amar a Jesús a través de la Virgen. ¡Pide a
