The Dear Faith Family of Our Lady of Grace,
Praised be Jesus Christ…now and forever!
Our community of faith for the last couple of months knowing the spiritual and emo onal need out there has
been responding every month by invi ng people to come to our month Anoin ng of the Sick liturgy a er the
9:30am and 11 am Sunday Masses. If there is someone you know who can benefit from the anoin ng invite
them to come to Mass and be anointed. Or if someone is not able to leave there home, hospital, or other
medical facility call the parish office and we will try to visit them as schedules permit. What is the significance
of this sacrament? What is its origin?
Sickness, accidents, age—all things we have faced or will face as human beings. It’s just part of life. Life isn’t perfect and things
happen. And some mes they happen very unexpectedly.
When Jesus became human of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he entered this imperfect world as Jesus of Nazareth. His life was not
no ceably different from anyone else’s; at least not at first. And he, too, experienced human weakness. There were days when
he suffered like us, especially at the end of his life. And so did his mother. A er all, Simeon had predicted that a sword would
pierce her heart. So, Jesus and Mary were not strangers to suffering.
The Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick addresses this very human reality and is considered a sacrament of healing. As a sac-
rament, it is one of the ways Jesus assists us in life and offers his divine help. In this case, he offers his courage, strength, and
healing—including spiritual healing in the forgiveness of sins. He is with his Church as members of his family face the difficul es
inherent in being human. And he can do this with empathy because of his own human experiences.
Ideally, the sacrament is celebrated with a gathering of the Chris an faithful within the context of a Mass or Liturgy of the Word.
While it can be administered by a priest with only the sick person present, it is best if the pa ent’s family and friends are gath-
ered as a sign of the Church’s concern, as well as the Lord’s. Suffering has a communal aspect for if one person suffers, in a real
sense, all suffer. The sacrament is intended to address and heal the suffering of all.
The ritual of the sacrament involves a laying on of hands and an anoin ng with the Oil of the Infirm, first, on the forehead, and
then on the palm of the hands, with the words: “Through this holy anoin ng may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with
the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” Simple gestures, simple words,
and a promise of God’s healing presence and the forgiveness of sins. But the sacrament also unites us with the sufferings of
Christ as it addresses the mystery of suffering. while we cannot adequately address that issue here, suffice it to say that when
we face an illness, suffering, or the effects of aging we are involved in the mystery of suffering and how our suffering is united
with the suffering of Christ. And, because of this mystery, as we celebrate the Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick, we may
wrestle with what exactly we expect the sacrament to do.
Obviously, we would like a complete return to life as we knew it—whether for us or a loved one. That’s what we deeply desire,
but know that it will not always happen, short of a miracle. And miracles do happen. So, what can we realis cally expect? The
sacrament promises the presence of the Lord in his healing power. Some mes that does include a restora on of physical, emo-
onal, or mental health. Some mes it does not. But even when it doesn’t, we can o en experience a true healing of a sort that
we did not expect. Our faith tells us that God some mes answers our prayers in ways that are good for us, rather than in the
ways we want. So, we are asked, in faith, to trust in the goodness of God. We know that the Lord is working in the life of the sick
person because of the assurance of the sacrament, for sacraments do what they say that they do because they are guaranteed
by God.
While the focus of the Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick is on healing and life, the reality of death is also a part of every
human life. We know we are going to die, and death means entry into eternal life thanks to the redemp ve work of Jesus. And
some illnesses and suffering will end in death. So, what is the effect of the sacrament in those cases?
If the person’s condi on is terminal, the Church offers the Eucharist (Via cum) along with the Anoin ng of the Sick as food for
the journey home. In this case, the sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick prepares the person for a peaceful death with an as-
surance of the Church’s, as well as the Lord’s, help. Here the healing is spiritual in the forgiveness of sins and the prepara on for
death. Each of the seven sacraments touches an important aspect of human life. God is with us through it all from birth to
death. The Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick touches us in the weakness of our human existence for the Lord wants to be
involved when we are most vulnerable. It recognizes our frailty and assures us that even in our weakest or declining moments,
God is right there to strengthen us. He will not leave us on our own.
Jesus, heal our people…Jesus, Divine Physician, give us peace…Jesus, restore our minds, bodies, and hearts!

Querida Familia de Fe de Nuestra Señora de Gracia,
Alabado sea Jesucristo... ¡ahora y para siempre!
Nuestra comunidad de fe durante los úl mos meses, conociendo la necesidad espiritual y emocional que existe,
ha estado respondiendo cada mes invitando a las personas a venir a nuestro mes Liturgia de unción de los enfer-
mos después de las misas dominicales de las 9:30 a.m. y las 11 a.m. Si hay alguien que conoces que puede benefi-
ciarse de la unción, invítalo a venir a misa y ser ungido. O si alguien no puede salir de allí a su hogar, hospital u
otro centro médico, llame a la oficina parroquial y trataremos de visitarlos según lo permitan los horarios. ¿Cuál es
el significado de este sacramento? ¿Cuál es su origen?
Enfermedad, accidentes, edad: todas las cosas que hemos enfrentado o enfrentaremos como seres humanos. Es solo parte de la
vida. La vida no es perfecta y las cosas pasan. Y a veces suceden de manera muy inesperada.
Cuando Jesús se hizo humano de la San sima Virgen María, entró en este mundo imperfecto como Jesús de Nazaret. Su vida no era
notablemente diferente de la de cualquier otra persona; al menos no al principio. Y él también experimentó debilidad humana. Hu-
bo días en que sufrió como nosotros, especialmente al final de su vida. Y también lo hizo su madre. Después de todo, Simeón había
predicho que una espada perforaría su corazón. Por lo tanto, Jesús y María no eran ajenos al sufrimiento.
El Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos aborda esta realidad tan humana y es considerado un sacramento de curación. Como
sacramento, es una de las formas en que Jesús nos ayuda en la vida y ofrece su ayuda divina. En este caso, ofrece su coraje, fortale-
za y sanación, incluida la curación espiritual en el perdón de los pecados. Él está con su Iglesia mientras los miembros de su familia
enfrentan las dificultades inherentes al ser humano. Y puede hacer esto con empa a debido a sus propias experiencias humanas.
Idealmente, el sacramento se celebra con una reunión de fieles cris anos dentro del contexto de una Misa o Liturgia de la Palabra.
Si bien puede ser administrado por un sacerdote con solo la persona enferma presente, es mejor si la familia y los amigos del pa-
ciente se reúnen como un signo de la preocupación de la Iglesia, así como de la del Señor. El sufrimiento ene un aspecto comunita-
rio porque si una persona sufre, en un sen do real, todos sufren. La Santa Cena está des nada a abordar y sanar el sufrimiento de
todos.
El ritual del sacramento implica una imposición de manos y una unción con el Aceite de los Enfermos, primero, en la frente, y luego
en la palma de las manos, con las palabras: "A través de esta santa unción, que el Señor en su amor y misericordia os ayude con la
gracia del Espíritu Santo. Que el Señor que te libera del pecado te salve y te levante". Gestos simples, palabras simples y una prome-
sa de la presencia sanadora de Dios y el perdón de los pecados. Pero el sacramento también nos une con los sufrimientos de Cristo
al tratar el misterio del sufrimiento. si bien no podemos abordar adecuadamente ese tema aquí, basta con decir que cuando enfren-
tamos una enfermedad, sufrimiento o los efectos del envejecimiento, estamos involucrados en el misterio del sufrimiento y cómo
nuestro sufrimiento está unido con el sufrimiento de Cristo. Y, debido a este misterio, mientras celebramos el Sacramento de la
Unción de los Enfermos, podemos luchar con lo que exactamente esperamos que haga el Sacramento.
Obviamente, nos gustaría un regreso completo a la vida tal como la conocíamos, ya sea para nosotros o para un ser querido. Eso es
lo que deseamos profundamente, pero sabemos que no siempre sucederá, a menos que sea un milagro. Y los milagros suceden.
Entonces, ¿qué podemos esperar de manera realista? La Santa Cena promete la presencia del Señor en su poder sanador. A veces
eso incluye una restauración de la salud sica, emocional o mental. A veces no es así. Pero incluso cuando no lo hace, a menudo
podemos experimentar una verdadera curación de un po que no esperábamos. Nuestra fe nos dice que Dios a veces responde a
nuestras oraciones de maneras que son buenas para nosotros, en lugar de de las maneras que queremos. Por lo tanto, se nos pide,
con fe, que confiemos en la bondad de Dios. Sabemos que el Señor está obrando en la vida del enfermo debido a la seguridad del

parte de toda vida humana. Sabemos que vamos a morir, y la muerte significa la entrada en la vida eterna gracias a la obra redento-
ra de Jesús. Y algunas enfermedades y sufrimientos terminarán en la muerte. Entonces, ¿cuál es el efecto de la Santa Cena en esos
casos?
Si la condición de la persona es terminal, la Iglesia ofrece la Eucaris a (Viá co) junto con la Unción de los Enfermos como alimento
para el viaje a casa. En este caso, el sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos prepara a la persona para una muerte pacífica con la
seguridad de la ayuda de la Iglesia, así como del Señor. Aquí la curación es espiritual en el perdón de los pecados y la preparación
para la muerte. Cada uno de los siete sacramentos toca un aspecto importante de la vida humana. Dios está con nosotros a través
de todo desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte. El Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos nos toca en la debilidad de nuestra exis-
tencia humana porque el Señor quiere involucrarse cuando somos más vulnerables. Reconoce nuestra fragilidad y nos asegura que
incluso en nuestros momentos más débiles o en declive, Dios está allí para fortalecernos. Él no nos dejará solos.
Jesús, sana a nuestro pueblo... Jesús, Médico Divino, danos paz... ¡Jesús, restaura nuestras mentes, cuerpos y corazones!
