THIRTY FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME - CHRIST THE KING “INRI:
‘MY KINGDOM IS NOT HERE’”
When we come to today’s Gospel reading (Jn.18,33-37) we find Jesus on trial before Pilate. Jesus has
been accused of calling Himself a king and Pilate’s own concern is political. All Pilate wants to know is
whether Jesus is a political agitator claiming some kind of earthly kingship. And Jesus makes it very clear
that His kingdom is not of this world. Pilate immediately realizes that Jesus is no political threat. Pilate is
impatient to know the truth about Jesus, but his Roman education and experience of the world has made him
very distrustful.
Jesus does not deny being a king, just as He did not deny Peter’s mentioning that He was the Messiah,
but this designation is not enough. He does not want to be limited to a kingship of this world: the sort of
worldly king which the crowds wanted to make Him after Jesus had performed the “miracle of the loaves”.
The inability to accept the reality of evenhanded truth makes Pilate a poor judge and deaf to what
Jesus is saying. Pilate knows that Jesus is innocent of any charge against Him and yet this truth has little
value that Pilate will sweep it aside to keep the mob happy. We can be weak like Pilate and surrender to the
idea that actually all that matters is “not rocking the boat”, going along with the majority just for the sake of
peace and quiet. Or we can rise to the challenge of God’s truth, that the presence of a God of boundless love
and mercy is in charge of this world, and we have to witness to that like Jesus Himself, whether people listen
or not, confident in the knowledge that one day they will all see and understand.
We might ask ourselves, “Have we seen a true growing of Christ’s Kingdom over these years? Have
we seen honest change in our societies with the different government with a just and equal sharing of
resources?”
As we come ourselves to worship Christ the King on this final Sunday of the Church’s year how can
we exercise the kingship Jesus has given to us through Baptism? We do not achieve this by escaping into a
private world. Rather, by bearing witness to the truth in our political worlds we can admit His universal rule
in our lives and then pray that His kingdom may become fully present on earth as it is in Heaven. - Fr. Stephen
TRIGÉSIMO CUARTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO- CRISTO REY “INRI:
‘MI REINO NO ESTÁ AQUÍ’”
Cuando llegamos a la lectura del Evangelio de hoy (Juan 18,33-37), encontramos a Jesús en juicio
ante Pilato. Jesús ha sido acusado de llamarse rey y la preocupación de Pilato es política. Todo lo que Pilato
quiere saber es si Jesús es un agitador político que reclama algún tipo de realeza terrenal. Y Jesús deja muy
claro que su reino no es de este mundo. Pilato se da cuenta de inmediato de que Jesús no es una amenaza
política. Pilato está impaciente por conocer la verdad acerca de Jesús, pero su educación romana y su
experiencia del mundo le han hecho desconfiar mucho.
Jesús no niega ser un rey, así como tampoco negó que Pedro mencionara que Él era el Mesías, pero
esta designación no es suficiente. No quiere limitarse a la realeza de este mundo: la clase de rey mundano

Papal Reflection - “Christ, King of the Universe”
The Solemnity of Christ, King of the Universe, which we celebrate today, is set at the conclusion of the
liturgical year, and recalls that the life of creation proceeds toward a final destination: the manifestation of
Christ, Lord of all creation. Today’s Gospel passage (Jn.18 :33-37) speaks to us about the kingdom of Jesus
Christ recounting the humiliating situation that He is in after being arrested in the garden of Olives. Jesus is
bound, insulted, accused, and led before the authorities of Jerusalem. He then is presented to Pilate as one
who seeks to undermine political power.
It is evident from His entire life that Jesus does not political ambitions. Let us recall that after the
multiplication of the loaves, the people, excited by the miracle, would have sought to proclaim Him king, to
overturn the Roman power and re-establish the kingdom of Israel. For Jesus the kingdom is something else,
and it is certainly not achieved by any type of violence. This is why He withdrew alone to pray on the mount
(Jn.6: 5-15). Now, in responding, He makes Pilate take note that His disciples did not fight to defend Him,
“if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the
authorities”. (Jn.18; 36 )
History teaches us that kingdoms founded on the abuse of power are fragile and sooner or later collapse.
The Kingdom of God is founded on His love and rooted in hearts, granting peace, freedom, and fullness of
life upon those who freely embrace it. We all want peace, freedom, and fulfilment. And how do you do
this? Allow the love of God, and His Kingdom to dominate your action and words to all. Live daily the
freedom of the children of God.
Today Jesus asks us to allow Him to become our king. A king who, with His word, His example and
His life offered on the cross saved us from death, and—this king—indicates the path to those who are lost,
gives new light to our existence marred by doubt, by fear and by everyday trials. But we must not forget that
Jesus’ kingdom is not of this world. He will give new meaning to our life—helping us learn through our
mistakes. May Mary and the saints help us to welcome Jesus as the king of our lives.
Reflexión Papal - “Cristo, Rey del Universo”
La solemnidad de Cristo, Rey del Universo, que celebramos hoy, se sitúa al final del año
litúrgico y recuerda que la vida de la creación avanza hacia un destino final: la manifestación de
Cristo, Señor de toda la creación. El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy (Juan 18: 33-37) nos habla del reino
de Jesucristo relatando la humillante situación en la que se encuentra después de ser arrestado en el
huerto de los Olivos. Jesús es atado, insultado, acusado y llevado ante las autoridades de Jerusalén.
Luego se le presenta a Pilato como alguien que busca socavar el poder político.
Es evidente por toda su vida que Jesús no tiene ambiciones políticas. Recordemos que después
de la multiplicación de los panes, el pueblo, excitado por el milagro, habría buscado proclamarlo rey,
derrocar el poder romano y restablecer el reino de Israel. Para Jesús el reino es otra cosa, y

La historia nos enseña que los reinos fundados en el abuso de poder son frágiles y tarde o
temprano colapsan. El Reino de Dios está fundado en su amor y enraizado en los corazones,
otorgando paz, libertad y plenitud de vida a quienes lo abrazan libremente. Todos queremos paz,
libertad y plenitud. ¿Y como haces esto? Permita que el amor de Dios y Su Reino dominen sus
acciones y palabras para todos. Viva diariamente la libertad de los hijos de Dios.
Hoy Jesús nos pide que le permitamos convertirse en nuestro rey. Un rey que, con su palabra, su
ejemplo y su vida ofrecida en la cruz, nos salvó de la muerte y, este rey, indica el camino a los
perdidos, da nueva luz a nuestra existencia empañada por la duda, el miedo y el Ensayos diarios.
Pero no debemos olvidar que el reino de Jesús no es de este mundo. Él le dará un nuevo significado a
nuestra vida, ayudándonos a aprender a través de nuestros errores. Que María y los santos nos
ayuden a acoger a Jesús como rey de nuestra vida.

Year of Saint Joseph
“St. Joseph´s Table”

One of the first prayers that many of us learn as children is that for our guardian angel. Most Christian adults
memorized it long ago and find it firmly lodged in our minds.
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day (or night) be at my side, to light, to guard,
to rule and guide. AMEN.
Our parents taught us this prayer not to make us think that someone was watching us, but that someone was watching
over us. As scary as the darkness of a night or the fear of being alone might be, one could always rely on our guardian
angel to have us protected and accompanied. For many of us, it gave courage and hope in difficult
circumstances. We could rely on this guardian companion.
I like the term “guardian.” It has an association with St. Joseph. Frequently he receives the title “Guardian of the
Lord” and “Guardian of the Holy Family.” I suspect that St. Joseph would have welcomed the description.
This term is embedded in Psalm 121—one of the Song of Ascents (120-134). As people gathered and began their
journey to the Holy City, Jerusalem, they would pray these songs along the way. The Holy Family would have joined
in this trek numerous times. I hear St. Joseph pondering this image as he walked:
1 I raise my eyes toward the mountains.
From whence shall come my help?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to slip
or your guardian to sleep.
4 Behold, the guardian of Israel
never slumbers nor sleeps.
5 The LORD is your guardian;
the LORD is your shade
at your right hand.
6 By day the sun will not strike you,
nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will guard you from all evil;
he will guard your soul.
8 The LORD will guard your coming and going
both now and forever.
Could Joseph have imagined himself as the Lord’s instrument in this context? The angel of the Lord had instructed
him to take Mary, his wife, and the child that she carried, into his home (Mt 1:20, 24). Pope John Paul II titled his
apostolic exhortation on Joseph “Redemptoris Custos” (1989)—“Guardian of the Redeemer”—and explained:
[The incarnation] is precisely the mystery in which Joseph of Nazareth “shared” like no other human being except Mary, the
Mother of the Incarnate Word. He shared in it with her; he was involved in the same salvific event; he was the guardian of the
same love . . . (RC, 1)
And again:
Joseph was in his day the lawful and natural guardian, head and defender of the Holy Family. (RC, 28)
Psalm 121 holds up the Lord as the guardian of Israel and its people. One can see how Joseph embraces that role in
relation to Jesus and Mary. Always attentive to the challenges that might confront his wife and child, Joseph stood
guard. Can you imagine Mary and the child after the birth in Bethlehem. Both mother and child would be exhausted,
and we can imagine Joseph standing by and guarding them with the love of a father and spouse. His presence made
their rest possible and comfortable. One can characterize him as an angel.
In the decree Paternas vices (May 1, 2013)—by which Pope Francis places the name of Joseph in the Eucharistic
Prayers II, III, and IV—we read:
“[St. Joseph] stands as an exemplary model of the kindness and humility that the Christian faith raises to a great destiny, and

Una de las primeras oraciones que muchos de nosotros aprendemos de niños es la de
nuestro ángel de la guarda. La mayoría de los adultos cristianos lo memorizaron hace
mucho tiempo y lo encuentran firmemente alojado en nuestras mentes.
Ángel santo de la guarda, compañero de mi vida, tú que nunca me abandonas, ni de noche ni de día... Amen
Nuestros padres nos enseñaron esta oración no para hacernos pensar que alguien nos estaba mirando, sino que alguien
nos estaba cuidando. Por más aterradora que pueda ser la oscuridad de una noche o el miedo a estar solo, uno siempre
puede confiar en nuestro ángel de la guarda para que nos proteja y acompañe. Para muchos de nosotros, nos dio valor
y esperanza en circunstancias difíciles. Podríamos confiar en este compañero guardián.
Me gusta el término "guardián". Tiene una asociación con San José. Con frecuencia recibe el título de "Guardián del
Señor" y "Guardián de la Sagrada Familia". Sospecho que a San José le habría gustado la descripción.
Este término está incrustado en el Salmo 121, uno de los Cantos de las Subidas (120-134). Cuando la gente se reunía
y comenzaba su viaje a la Ciudad Santa, Jerusalén, rezaban estas canciones en el camino. La Sagrada Familia se
habría unido a esta caminata en numerosas ocasiones. Escucho a San José reflexionar sobre esta imagen mientras
caminaba:

¿De dónde vendrá mi ayuda?
2 Mi ayuda viene del SENOR,
que hizo los cielos y la tierra.

¿José podría haberse imaginado a sí mismo como el instrumento del Señor en este contexto? El ángel del Señor le
había ordenado que llevara a su casa a María, a su esposa y al niño que ella llevaba (Mt 1:20, 24). El Papa Juan Pablo
II tituló su exhortación apostólica sobre José “Redemptoris Custos” (1989) - “Guardián del Redentor” - y explicó:
La Encarnación es precisamente el misterio en el que José de Nazaret “compartió” como ningún otro ser humano excepto
María, la Madre del Verbo Encarnado. Lo compartió con ella; estuvo involucrado en el mismo evento salvífico; era el guardián
del mismo amor. . . (RC, 1)
Y otra vez:
José fue en su día el tutor legítimo y natural, jefe y defensor de la Sagrada Familia. (RC, 28)
El Salmo 121 presenta al Señor como el guardián de Israel y su pueblo. Se puede ver cómo José asume ese papel en
relación con Jesús y María. Siempre atento a los desafíos que pudieran enfrentar su esposa e hijo, Joseph hizo
guardia. ¿Te imaginas a María y al niño después del nacimiento en Belén? Tanto la madre como el niño estarían
exhaustos, y podemos imaginarnos a José de pie y protegiéndolos con el amor de un padre y un cónyuge. Su
presencia hizo posible y confortable su descanso. Se le puede caracterizar como un ángel.
En el decreto Paternas vicios (1 de mayo de 2013) —por el cual el Papa Francisco coloca el nombre de José en las
Oraciones Eucarísticas II, III y IV— leemos:
"San José se erige como un modelo ejemplar de la bondad y la humildad que la fe cristiana eleva a un gran destino, y
