TRULY OUR SISTER:
                   MARY IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
       Tuesday Evenings, May 4, 11, 18 & 25, 2021 ~ 7-9 PM (Central Time)
    Repeated on Wednesday Mornings – May 5, 12, 19, 26, 2021 ~ 10 AM-Noon

Who is Mary and what do we know about her from the various Biblical passages that
pertain to her? Many theological explanations and devotional practices often minimize the
fact that Mary is a first century Jewish woman. Through their theological and scriptural
studies, Elizabeth Johnson and other women scholars have helped us understand what it
was like to be a woman in the first century male dominated Jewish world.

• Mary struggles like you and I to discern and make sense of where God is leading her.
• Mary is a woman of faith caught up in the faith traditions of her Jewish ancestors who
nurtured within her a certain image of God.
• Being part of a society that is heavily male dominated, Mary has to struggle as any
woman does to maintain her dignity and worth as a human being.
• Mary experiences what it is like to leave home, be an immigrant and refugee from
oppressive and unjust powers, while trying to keep her family together and safe.

These Zoom sessions explore these and other aspects of Mary's life as understood
through the cultural and historical unpacking of various biblical passages pertaining to her.
Together we will explore Mary's role as a woman in Jesus' life and in the life of the
Christian community. All churches and faith traditions are most welcome. The sessions will
be facilitated by Biagio Mazza, Pastoral Associate at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Belton,
MO. To register, email Biagio at biagio@stsabinaparish.org and please indicate your day
preference. Remember that the listed times are for the Central Time zone.

                                  and veggies cool and fresh.
                                  3. Try Something New and Buy in Season
Sample new products and foods that are in season. You might discover you
have a new favorite fruit or vegetable.
                                  4. Grab Bulk Portions
The best deals at the farmers market are had when you buy in bulk. You'll enjoy
the best flavors and the best prices when you buy lots of whatever is at its
harvest peak. Freezing, canning, and drying are just some of the ways you can
save seasonal tastes you find at the farmers market for later in the year.
                                  5. Ask Questions – If you are unsure of a product or need more information,
ask the vendor! He or she will certainly have plenty to share about the item
itself. You might go home with a new recipe.

in the Sunday lectionary cycles in on this Fifth Sunday of Easter in year B. It seems paradoxical that the psalm is
used for Holy Week as well as the Easter season but such is the nature of the Paschal reality we celebrate
during these days.

While the psalm refrain for Holy Week is the cry of Jesus from the cross, the refrain for Easter is: “I will praise you
Lord in the assembly of your people.” In other words, the Easter season highlights the thanksgiving portions
of the psalm, while Holy Week highlights the lament portions. The verses selected for this Sunday all
come from the thanksgiving portion of the psalm. They constitute an individual’s hymn of thanksgiving to God
after having been delivered from distress.

In verse 26, the one delivered fulfills the vow made to God, and does so in the midst of the believing
assembly, encouraging them to thank God for God’s wondrous deeds of deliverance. The encouragement
to give thanks moves out from the circle of believers to all the ends of the earth and all the families of nations.
God’s bounty, providence and care knows no bounds, and leaves no one out. Verse 30 widens the circle of God’s
blessedness to “all who sleep in the earth.” Even the dead bless and bow down to the Lord, acknowledging
God’s great marvels. The psalmist extends such acknowledgment and praise of God to include “my descendants,”
as well as the “coming generations” (verses 31-32). These verses end with the exhortation to hand down to future
generations the story of God’s unbounded goodness and graciousness.

Ps 22 underlies the passion narratives of the gospel, as well as the reality of the resurrection event. The
early Christian community recognized Psalm 22 as an ideal way of understanding the suffering and resurrection
victory of Jesus. The community placed this psalm on Jesus’ lips as the one experiencing both terrible
suffering, (the Holy Week emphasis), as well as the victory over death resulting in jubilant thanksgiving,
(the Easter emphasis). The psalm’s message is that, contrary to all evidence, the believer places total trust in
God, and that trust is rewarded beyond imagining.

God does not abandon us in our struggle. With the psalmist and the
whole community of faith, let us joyfully sing the psalm refrain, “I will
praise you Lord, in the assembly of your people.” Like the vine and Sunday, May 2

has abandonado?"

                                        asamblea". Como el símbolo
