Page 2 Growing in Faith. Firm in Hope. Fervent in Charity. Creciendo en la Fe. Firmes en la Fifth Sunday of Lent (Cycle B) Esperanza. Ardientes en la Caridad A Sunday Reflection WHOEVER SERVES ME MUST FOLLOW ME (JN 12:26). Fr. Luis R. Largaespada Pastor Today’s gospel begins with some Greeks who want to see Jesus, Fr. John Aduseh Poku but soon changes to a discourse that does not seem connected to Parochial Vicar that at all. However, if we look deeper, the connection is clear. Many Mrs. Mary E. Fernández, Ed.S. seek to see Jesus out of curiosity, to satisfy a desire, perhaps to be School Principal healed, but not really to serve or follow Him. Mrs. Patricia Zapatero Director of Religious Education But the Lord is very clear: if we seek to see Him, it must include Roberto Berrocal service, following in His footsteps. And His steps lead to the cross. Music Director Just as the grain of wheat does not produce fruit unless it dies (cf. Jn 12:24), so it is with us. We must die to self, not cling to the passing OFFICE HOURS things of life and follow Jesus. (Horas de Oficina) And in case you are wondering, no, He didn’t find it any easier than Monday thru Friday/Lunes a Viernes 8:00 am-4:00 pm we do. “I am troubled now,” He says, “Yet what should I say, Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this purpose that I MASS SCHEDULE came” (12:27). It is through this awful hour that Christ is glorified. If (Horario de Misas) we share in His sufferings, we will share in His glory. God bless you. SATURDAY VIGIL 5:30 pm (English) Fr. Si compartimos Sus sufrimientos, (Bautizos y Matrimonios) For information, call the office. participaremos de Su gloria. Que Dios los bendiga. Para información, llame a la oficina. P. Luis

John Aduseh Poku frjohn@st-hugh.org Parish Secretary: Leticia Mercado lmercado@st-hugh.org Why Cover the Crucifix? Bulletin: Milagros R. Morales IT SEEMS STRANGE that during the most sacred time of the year we mmorales@st-hugh.org cover everything … in our churches, even the crucifix. [Yet] the LITURGY / LITURGIA Church recommends this practice [of covering images and the crucifix from the 5th Sunday of Lent until the Easter Vigil] to heighten our Altar Servers: Juan Alayo altarservers@st-hugh.org senses and build within us a longing for Easter Sunday. Lectors & Extraordinary Ministers But why go through such lengths to cover up images that are of Holy Communion: designed to raise our hearts and minds toward heaven? First of all, we Silvia Santana ssantana@st-hugh.org use veils to alert us of the special time that we are in. These veils are a Ushers & Hospitality Ministry: forceful reminder to get ready [for the Sacred Triduum]. hospitalityministry@st-hugh.org Secondly, the veils focus our attention on the words being said at Sacristy: Silvia Santana Mass [during the reading of the Passion]. Our senses … focus on the ssantana@st-hugh.org striking words from the Gospel and truly enter into the scene. FAITH FORMATION Third, the Church uses veils to produce a heightened sense FORMACIÓN of anticipation for Easter Sunday. And therein lies the whole point: Bible Classes: Karen Bonvecchio the veils are not meant to be there forever. The unveiling before the bibleclasses@st-hugh.org Easter Vigil is a great reminder of our own life on earth. We live in a Clases de Biblia: Patricia Zapatero “veiled” world, in exile from our true home. It is only through our own dre@st-hugh.org death that the veil is lifted and we are finally able to see the beauty of Pre-Baptismal Classes: everything in our lives. Cristina Fundora cfundora@st-hugh.org Excerpted from Aleteia.org and used with permission.
